*The Good Friday Reading: (From the Suffering Servant) L: What’s happened? Why are you here? P: We have come because they have crucified our Lord. L: Who has crucified your Lord? P: The Roman soldiers, at Pilate’s command, as requested by the Jewish leaders. L: But I heard you yell “Crucify!” in the awful silence of your souls. P: We all, like sheep, have gone astray. *The Prayer of the Day: L: Almighty God... P: Your Son was lifted up on the cross to draw all people to Himself. Grant that we who have been born out of His wounded side may find mercy, forgiveness, and hope in Him. In Your powerful name we pray, Amen.

In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light my strength my song This Cornerstone this solid Ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love what depths of peace When fears are stilled when strivings cease My Comforter my All in All Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save Till on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live

Your only Son no sin to hide But You have sent Him from Your side To walk upon this guilty sod And to become the Lamb of God

(Chorus) Oh Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God I love the Holy Lamb of God Oh wash me in His precious Blood My Jesus Christ the Lamb of God

Your gift of love they crucified They laughed and scorned Him as He died The humble King they named a fraud And sacrificed the Lamb of God

(Chorus) Oh Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God I love the Holy Lamb of God Oh wash me in His precious Blood My Jesus Christ the Lamb of God

Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand The shadow of a mighty Rock Within a weary land A home within the wilderness A rest upon the way From the burning of the noontide heat And the burden of the day

Upon the cross of Jesus Mine eye at times can see The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me And from my smitten heart with tears These wonders I confess The wonder of His glorious love And my unworthiness

The Stripping of the Altar

About the Service of Tenebrae

You are about to participate in one of the oldest services in Christian Tradition. The Tenebrae (darkness) Service is a series of Scripture readings and hymns designed to call attention to the significance of Jesus’ words from the cross. The service begins with a fully lighted altar and church. As the words of Jesus are remembered in Scripture and in hymns, the lights are dimmed in progression. The complete darkness is a sign of the darkness of Christ’s three days in the tomb.

“He drained the cup of God's wrath bone dry, leaving not a drop for us to drink.”

— Richard Allen Bodey

O sacred head now wounded With grief and shame weighed down Now scornfully surrounded With thorns thine only crown How pale thou art with anguish With sore abuse and scorn How does that visage languish Which once was bright as morn

What thou my Lord hast suffered Was all for sinners’ gain Mine, mine was the transgression But thine the deadly pain Lo here I fall my Savior ‘Tis I deserve thy place Look on me with thy favor Vouch safe to me Thy grace

Go to dark Gethsemane All who feel the tempter's pow'r Your Redeemer's conflict see Watch with Him one bitter hour Turn not from His griefs away Learn of Jesus Christ to pray

Calv'ry's mournful mountain climb There' adoring at His feet Mark the miracle of time God's own sacrifice complete "It is finished!" Hear the cry Learn from Jesus Christ to die

Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
