Background
In 2005, National Service period was reduced from 2½ to 2 years.
Subsequently, NUS, NTU and SMU allowed students to matriculate early through enrolling for the Special Term (which begins in May).
In AY2011-12, NUS Special Term (ST) is offered in two parts of 6-weeks each:
Part 1: 7 May to 16 June 2012
Part 2: 18 June to 28 July 2012

Proposals for Special Term
On offer – mainly modules for University-level and Breadth requirements
Some faculties / departments may offer limited number of programme requirement modules
Two options:
Option 1 – use Special Term as adjustment period
Option 2 – take the maximum number of ST modules (up to 4), and you may graduate a semester earlier
Copyright National University of Singapore 2011 11
Options for ST - Option 1
Read between 1 to 2 module(s) over the two 6-weeks periods
Complete the degree requirements over the normal 6 or 8 regular semesters (3 or 4-year course respectively)
Notes:
Minimum workload in a regular semester is 15 MCs
Recommended average workload in a regular semester is 20 MCs, i.e. 5 modules of 4 MCs each

OPTION 1
Advantages
Use Special Term as an adjustment period to ease into university education in a measured way before embarking on a full load during the regular semesters
Use Special Term to ease workload in the regular semesters, yet able to join the main cohort throughout the entire course of study
Depending on your course of study, this option may give you flexibility in planning for your participation in special programmes like Student Exchange Programme and NUS Overseas College

Options for ST - Option 2
Read the max of 4 modules over the two 6-weeks periods, i.e. 2 modules in Part 1, and 2 modules in Part 2
Read a heavier workload of 24 MCs (6 modules instead of the typical 5) in one of the regular semesters
Complete the degree requirements in 5 or 7 regular semesters (3 or 4-year course respectively)
Copyright National University of Singapore 2011 14
Option 2
Advantage
Use Special Term to complete degree requirements and graduate one semester earlier than cohort
Considerations
Need to cope with the intensity of the Special Term modules
Need to overload in one of the regular semesters
