Rochester’s Jewish community is beginning an exciting new chapter this month. We are welcoming Rabbi Rochelle Tulik as our Assistant Rabbi and at the same time, Temple Sinai and Temple Beth El are both welcoming new ordained can-tors. I know you join me in welcoming Cantor Renata Braun and Cantor Randall Levin. Personally and professionally, I relish the chance to learn and lead together with these col-leagues. Rochester is very lucky in the closeness that we have among our rabbis and cantors.

As Rabbi Tulik begins her tenure at TBK, a few gentle re-minders. Please help her learn all of our names by wearing your nametags, introducing and reintroducing yourselves, and sharing your stories and personal perspectives. The truth is, this is an opportunity for all of us to draw closer together as we learn more about each other in the coming months.

Rabbi Tulik and I, along with Cantorial Soloist Keri Lopatin Berger, will be exploring the various traditions and practices in our Shabbat and holiday services. I look forward to con-tinuing to experiment and find new ways to make our wor-

ship meaningful, engaging, and inclusive of different needs and interests. Planning for the High Holy Days is already well underway! Please share with us and with members of the Religious Practices Committee, any thoughts you may have about what you would like to see in our worship.

As we start this new chapter in TBK and in Rochester’s broader Jewish community, we are also pausing to celebrate a significant milestone. As I noted in my June Annual Meeting remarks, we have reached our 170th anniversary. There will be a number of special celebrations during the year. Most significantly, plan to join us on Friday, September 28 as we welcome Rabbi Dr. Gary Zola, one of the foremost scholars of American Jewish history, as our Lovenheim Lecturer and 170th Anniversary Scholar in Residence.

During these summer months, we will enjoy being outdoors for several picnics, outdoor services, and other special events. Let’s soak in the warm sun and the warmth of our TBK fami-ly. Let’s relish in the beautiful night sky and the beauty of our holy community. Together, let us rejoice that we are TBK!

Looking Forward . . .

It’s been said that the hallmark of a dynamic, positive organization is that it looks forward, not backward. For a sacred orga-nization like TBK, I would assert that is mostly, but not absolutely, true.

As I write this, several transitions are in the future; they will be accomplished facts by the time you read it. We will soon thank Dr. Daniel Mendelson for his amazing service to TBK as President for the past two and a half years, and I will begin my at-tempt to fill those sizable shoes. I personally look forward to working with Rabbi Stein, Executive Director Michael Yudelson and our incredible professional staff to continue and build upon Daniel’s work.

We will bid a warm farewell to our Associate Rabbi of the past four years, Kelly Levy. Rabbi Levy is returning to her Texas roots (roots I partially share) to join the clergy of Congregation Beth Israel in Austin. Her deep spirituality and ready smile will surely be missed. We will also bid farewell to Suzanne Clark, our Assistant Executive Director, upon her retirement after fourteen years of incredible service, and wish her much happiness in retirement. We will welcome our new Assistant Rabbi, Rochelle Tulik, who comes to us from Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles.

We also look forward to sharing with you the details of our exciting new approach to supporting Temple B’rith Kodesh financially, a voluntary commitment model that has proven successful in dozens of URJ congregations across North Ameri-ca. And while the concept may be a step forward for TBK, it hearkens strongly to our foundation in Torah, where Moses was commanded to accept gifts from all whose hearts so moved them in order to build the Tabernacle. And so we will expand our invitation to the Rochester Jewish community (both current and prospective members) to support TBK as their hearts move them, even as we work to offer an ever more welcoming environment to that community.

To always look forward without losing sight of our storied past - that’s the dynamic, positive setting that is Temple B’rith Ko-desh: studying, growing and caring together since 1848. I look forward to working with you to continue the tradition.

See you in temple!

Book Discussion Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor by Yossi Klein HaleviWednesday August 15 at 6:00 pm

Bring your own dinner for a casual discussion and dine group. Come for Wednes-day Evening Minyan at 5:30 pm and stay!

This book has been very well received. Some of the comments include:

“Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor conveys the urgency and poetry of the Israeli story. I hope everyone will read these beautiful letters - Palestinians and Jews and anyone else interested in understanding who the Jews are and why we returned home” Natan Sharansky, Chairman Jewish Agency for Israel

“Beautifully written, with passion, generosity, and above all great heart, Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor offers a model not only for Middle East peacemaking but for navigating divides in our own society.” Cokie Roberts

RSVPs are not necessary, but if you want to let the Rabbi’s Study know that you plan to attend that would be great - [email protected].

We were pleased to see 200+ congregants at TBK’s 2018 Annual Meeting. To recap for those who weren’t able to join us:

-The meeting was called to order by Daniel Mendelson who then spoke about his 2+ years as Temple President.

-Rabbi Levy spoke about her four years at TBK and Rabbi Stein presented his remarks.

-An update on the 125th anniversary of WRJ/Sisterhood was given by Co-President Ellen Solomon.

-Steve Schwartz provided an update on the Campaign to Ensure Our Future. To date the Campaign has secured $2.4 million in pledges and received $967,000 in payments for the endowment that will support the financial future of TBK. So far 110 members of TBK have made pledges but we need to grow that number. Please contact me if you would like further infor mation on the Campaign.

-Rabbi Stein presented the Rabbi Laurence A. Kotok Tikkun Olam Award to Tempro Development; Jerry Zakalik accepted on behalf of Tempro. Daan Braveman presented the Aaron D. Braveman Etz Chayem Award to Herb Skerker. Steve Schwartz presented a recognition plaque to Justin Vigdor for his role in starting the TBK Foundation and for serving on its board for many years.

-Michael Kaufman gave an overview of the new Alternative Commitment Model which will replace the old dues structure. This exciting change was recently endorsed and approved by the Board of Trustees. It will allow congregants to “give from their hearts” to support TBK and will focus on being relational rather than transactional. There will be many opportun ities to learn more about this, beginning with informational sessions on Wednesday, July 25 at 7 pm and Sunday, August 5 at 10 am. We hope to see you at one of them, but if you are unable to attend there will be other opportunities later on.

-Nominating Committee Chair Lynda Bowen presented the slate of candidates to join the Board of Trustees: Aaron Cantor, Amy V. Kahn, Jacqui Liebman, Bobbi Rubens, Jonathan Siegel and David Stone for an initial three-year term and Irene Narotsky to serve a second three-year term. This slate was approved unanimously by the congregation.

-The 2018-19 Budget was presented and approved unanimously. The improved financial structure and processes will allow TBK to closely monitor revenue and expenses and make necessary budget adjustments as the year progresses. Some budget highlights:

•Budget being presented is balanced.

•Anticipates a 2.5% in commitment payments.

•No increase in religious school tuition.

•Revenue is increasing due to an increase in rental income. •Both the assistant executive director position and financial position will be eliminated and a new, higher level accounting position will be created.

Michael Yudelson TBK Executive Director

Charitable Giving Begins at TBK

•A third maintenance position will be added. This should allow for an increase in facility rentals. Grass cutting and cleaning will both be brought in-house instead of con-tracting for those services.

TBK Policy Regarding High Holy Day Admission

The TBK Board of Trustees has approved the following list of admission policies in keeping with the following principles:

1. TBK will be warm and welcoming to all.2. TBK will identify everyone who is attending services for safety and security purposes.3. TBK’s model of congregational life is “relational” and not “transactional”. While we require the financial support of congregants and families, we recognize that people attend and participate because of their relationships with others.4. TBK asks members of the congregation to support TBK to the best of their ability.5. TBK will strive to eliminate administrative roadblocks to participation. TBK works to encourage attendance, participation, commitment and connection to Judaism.

Adult Members in Good Standing - Identification nametags are enclosed with this mailing for each adult member of your house-hold approximately one month before High Holy Days if your member commitment is current or you have made arrangements with the office. Some Important Things About Our Community

Give Someone a “Lift”If you drive to High Holy Day services, Shabbat or other events at TBK please consider providing transportation to those unable to get here on their own. Contact Heather Chesterton at [email protected] or 244-7060 ext. 227 if you are willing to pick up TBK members so that they may participate.

Say “Hello” for the Holidays - Greeters NeededA New Year, new programs, new members of our congregation... wouldn’t you like to start something new? Greeting for High Holy Days is a nice way to start off the Jewish New Year, meeting and greeting members and guests at the door with a smile. It’s easy and fun. We need volunteers for Erev Rosh Hashana, Rosh Hashana 1st and 2nd day, Kol Nidre, Yom Kippur and festival days that follow. To volunteer or for more information, contact Herb Skerker at [email protected] or 381-9367.

Sign-up to Sing in the High Holy Day Choir! Please join us in the choir loft, and experience the holidays from a different point of view. You need to be above bar/bat mitzvah age and have experience sight-reading music (there is quite a bit of music to learn!) If you’re interested, contact Cantorial Soloist Keri Berger at [email protected].

Shofar Blowers Needed! If you are interested in being part of High Holy Days 5778, we are looking for shofarblowers. Please contact David Orange at [email protected] or 303-2701.

Doctors On Call! We try to assign a physician in charge for medical emergencies at each service. If you are able and willing to take this responsi-bility for one of the services (Erev Rosh Hashana, Rosh Hashana morning, Kol Nidre, Yom Kippur morning or afternoon), please contact Lisa Buchholz at [email protected] or 244-7060.

High Holy Day Israel BondsEach year TBK is pleased to be part of, and to support, the Israel Bond Drive. Look for the information and cards on the tables as you exit the Sanctuary. This year, and every year,we work to support Israel: Our Land, Our People, Our Promise. We encourage your support.

Rosh Hashana Activities for FamiliesMake Jewish New Year cards with your kids to send to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends. You can try handprint Rosh HaShana cards, or create cards that reinforce holiday themes such as roundness or sweetness. Ideas for holiday activities, crafts and recipes can be found at ReformJudaism.org.

Some Important Changes This Year

Cemetery Services will be held Sunday, September 9, before Rosh Hashana. 10:00 am at Mt. Hope Cemetery 11:00 am at White Haven Memorial ParkIt is traditional to visit the graves of loved ones at the High Holy Days. In Hebrew the custom is called Kever Avot. The theme of the prayers is peaceful eternal rest for the departed and an invocation for God’s aid to the living on the basis of the good deeds the dead performed in their lifetime.

Two Opportunities for TashlichMonday, September 10 - 20 minutes following Rosh Hashana Services. Meet at the Brickyard Trail.Sunday, September 16 at During the Congregational Picnic, 12:15 pm - 4:00 pm.The practice of Tashlich, which means to cast out, is derived from the verse from the prophet Micah, “God shall throw their sins into the depths of the sea.” (7:19). We live this by going to a body of living water such as a river or a lake for a service about 10 minutes long, as we throw crumbs of bread into the water to symbolize casting away our sins.

Festival Service Times moved to 10:30 am last year!A reminder that Sukkot, Simchat Torah and Shemini Atzeret services now begin at 10:30 am. The Second Day Rosh Hashana service will still begin at 10:00 am.

Our TBK Caring Circle welcomes an Afghan family to Rochester

In response to TBK’s brit/covenant commitment to refugees and immi-grants, the Social Action Committee partnered with No One Left Behind (nolb.org). Part of our response was the creation of a Caring Circle for a refugee family.

As I drove up peaceful East Avenue in May, taking an apprehensive Shakiba to her new apartment on Bobrich Drive, I imagined looking through the eyes of a newcomer from Kabul, Afghanistan - a war-torn, chaotic, dangerous country.

Shakiba and her husband Naser are ref-ugees due to his endangered status - he worked for the American military and was targeted by the Taliban, qualifying them for Special Immigrant Visas. They arrived in May after years of waiting, with four kids aged ten to seventeen. She speaks no English; Naser speaks and understands a bit more. The chil-dren’s fluency varies. But oh, are they motivated!

Hours of support have been given by volunteers from No One Left Behind and the Caring Circle from TBK - Paula Harris, Suzette Zientarski, Josh Herz, Susan Hellman, Scott Searl, Margie Searl, Ayala Emmett, Jacqui Lipschitz, and our “advisor” Irwin Solomon. Among other things, we transported the family to and from school, shopping, medical appoint-ments, and of course the obligatory visit to Highland Park. The kids attend Rochester International Academy; the parents attend OACES, the City School District center for adult learning.

Our Caring Circle continues to “hover” while encouraging their independence, guided by the spirit of Tikkun Olam.

Written by Margie Searl, member of the Social Action Committee and co-conve-ner of the TBK Caring Circle

Tempro Housing

Tempro is currently looking for new board members as we continue to serve our community and those in need. If you or someone you know is passionate about tikkun olam (performing acts of kindness to repair the world) and has a vision for helping those in our com-munity, Tempro is the organization for you!

Tempro is in need of people who have a strong connection to the Rochester community, solid financial knowledge and have experience working with or for non-profit organizations that serve those in need. We are also in need of people with PR experience. We want to get the word out about all that Tempro does for Rochester!

Please contact Dan Gurell at [email protected] if you are in-terested in serving on our Board. It will be a fulfilling and uplifting experience!

During the summer months Tempro will continue to serve families in our community who find themselves home-less. Repairs and updates to Tempro houses will be done over the summer and will be aided by the $100,000 grant Tempro was recently awarded. Repairs and updates will be made to the roofs, appliances, and hot water tanks. These fixes will make Tempro homes more comfortable and modern for the fami-lies that stay there!

This time of year is very exciting in the Religious School as we plan our next year of Jewish life and learning! There is a constant need to reimagine what the year ahead can include to make the learning meaningful, engaging and exciting for our students and their families.

We unpack our school’s vision so that everything we embrace for the new school year, meets our collective goals. One of my strongest goals is that of offering choices to our students so that they take ownership of their Jewish education and run with it. To that end, we’re so excited to announce that we’ve employed Aaron Bigeleisen to join our teaching team. Aaron will be coaching drama on Sunday mornings for our students, so look out for a terrific TBK show in the near future!

In addition to drama on Sunday morn-ings, we’re also including cooking, technology (using Chrome Books to re-inforce Judaic and Hebrew knowledge), music, art, Israel education, and library time. Our new children’s library, which includes books for students in Kinder-garten through Tenth Grade, will be dedicated on the first day of Religious School - Sunday, September 16.

There are so many ways for children to connect to their Jewish identity, and therefore infusing a multi-disciplinary curriculum into the school day will tap into our children’s passions.

Shelly Stam - my fabulous Adminis-trative Assistant - and I welcome you to join us for a cup of coffee (or tea) during the summer for a chat. We’d love to see you! Enjoy the rest of this beautiful summer!

Signups are ongoing for our TBK Choirs! We have 2 different groups to choose from depending on your skill level and commitment:

Kol Simcha - Our TBK Adult Choir meets several times throughout the year. This is the group that helps to lead occasional Shabbat services such as Jazz Shabbat and Spector Music Shabbat. These are shorter time commitments, generally 1-3 rehearsals and then the service. You do not need to be an expert at reading music, though some beginning skills are helpful. This group is open to any congregants above bar/bat mitzvah age.

TBK High Holy Day Choir - This is the choir that sings from the choir loft during our beautiful High Holy Day services. This choir is also open to any congregants above bar/bat mitzvah age. The High Holy Day music is more extensive and complex, so we do require all singers to have some skill reading music. Joining this choir is generally a commitment to be at 4 rehearsals starting in late August, and agreeing to be in the choir loft for the High Holy Day services.

Please consider joining us in the choir this year, and experience services from a different point of view! You must be on our official mailing list to receive the com-plete rehearsal schedule. If you’re interested, contact the music office or email Keri Berger to discuss the possibilities.

If you are interested in getting involved in planning for our special events or help-ing with our music advisory committee, please contact the Music Office at 244-7060 ext. 231, or email [email protected]. Vital music programming can happen only with your support!

Dinner & Guest Speaker Dr. Gary Zola

2018 is the 170th anniversary of our congregation. In celebration of this milestone, we will host a special Shabbat program on September 28.

Dr. Gary Zola is one of the foremost American Jewish historians. Dr. Zola is the Executive Director of the American Jewish Archives and has served in a number of prominent scholarly leadership roles. He is an extraordinarily gifted and engaging speaker and teacher, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him coming to temple to mark this significant anniversary.

Please plan to join us on September 28, and watch for other anniversary events to be announced in the coming months.
