Developing and encouraging HE progression among apprentices

Course developed for apprentices

But

Dual function in training the trainers format

• Experiencing the course - as apprentice would

• Then trainers deliver the course or parts of it themselves

Course aims:1.Prepare participants for

further study at HE level 4and above

2. Develop a range of study skills appropriate for further study at HE level 4 and above

3. Provide an initial higher education programme for advanced apprentices in our region

4. Provide an opportunity for participants to critically reflect upon their own learning and development, their educational aspirations and plan for their future study.

4. To provide an opportunity forparticipants to critically reflect upon their own learning and development, their educational aspirations and plan for their future study.

• Experience the course as an apprentice would, including assessment

• Think about how can use the content of the course (or course itself) in own work

• Identify where need to brush up own skills and knowledge

• Be able to influence strategy on HE progression for apprentices in own institution

Topics covered

• Barriers to apprentices progressing to HE

• Differences between studying in HE, FE and workplace

• Sources of HE information, advice and guidance for apprentices

• Skills needed for HE

Skills apprentices need to developfor HE study:

• Learning independently• Self-awareness e.g. own

learning style• Reflection and setting own

goals• Critical thinking• Motivation and time

management• Study skills – reading, note-

taking, referencing, different types of assignments (presentations, essays, reports)

Building confidence and switching apprentices on to HE!

Two fact-finding trips:• HE facilities at BFC and UCLan,

incl. library and IT

• HE Learning Mentors at BFC

• Talk to Admissions staff at UCLan
