TOP 10 SECRET POWERS EXPLAINED Have you ever wondered how your skin manages to withstand all of the environmental assaults it is bombarded with daily while maintaining its fresh, smooth and beautiful appearance? It is true that eventually it begins to age, but think of how long it takes before the first wrinkle forms. This is a true testament to the power of your skin. Even when your skin starts to fade this process takes many years – often decades. If you use the right cosmetics, you can enjoy smooth and beautiful skin well into your 40s and 50s and sometimes even longer. Of course, if you use the wrong kind of cosmetics, it can accelerate your skin’s aging process. So, it is worth knowing how your skin works and what it wants. It saves you money and it spares you from pain. Let’s now explore the 10 secret powers that your skin uses to remain smooth and youthful: 1. Your skin has layers. First, it has three distinct layers – epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fat. And second, it has layers within the epidermal layer itself. The advantage of such a formidable structure is obvious–when one layer wears off, it can be replaced, while the skin structure as a whole remains the same. 2. The outermost layer of your skin is composed of dead skin cells, glued together with lipids. Due to the fact that our skin is covered with a layer of tough, hard and quite dead scales, it can withstand all those assaults coming from our hostile environment as well as from our own well-meaning attempts to “improve” it. The stratum corneum is often compared to a “brick and mortar” wall, due to hard, protein- rich scales (bricks) that are held together with viscous lipids (mortar). WELCOME, TO OUR ONLINE MINI-COURSE! TOP 10 SECRET POWERS EXPLAINEDHave you ever wondered how your skin manages to withstand all of the environmental assaults it is bombarded with daily while maintaining its fresh, smooth and beautiful appearance? It is true that eventually it begins to age, but think of how long it takes before the first wrinkle forms. This is a true testament to the power of your skin.

Even when your skin starts to fade this process takes many years – often decades. If you use the right cosmetics, you can enjoy smooth and beautiful skin well into your 40s and 50s and sometimes even longer. Of course, if you use the wrong kind of cosmetics, it can accelerate your skin’s aging process. So, it is worth knowing how your skin works and what it wants. It saves you money and it spares you from pain.

Let’s now explore the 10 secret powers that your skin uses to remain smooth and youthful:

The stratum corneum is often compared to a “brick and mortar” wall, due to hard, protein-rich scales (bricks) that are held together with viscous lipids (mortar).

3. Your skin is actually water-proofed by lipids. Those lipids include skin oil that stays on its surface and lipids of the stratum corneum such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. These contain a high amount of essential polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids. If the lipid layer is damaged, the skin starts to lose water through excessive evaporation, which may cause it to become dry and wrinkled. Since so many cosmetic products damage the skin barrier, it is no surprise that dry skin, skin allergy and irritation are on the rise.

4. Your skin has “a gold reserve” – a collection of eternally young cells (stem cells) with almost unlimited repair power. As we age, those stem cells become less active. But with the right signal, they can be re-activated and directed to repair the damage.

5. Your skin’s epidermis rests on the dermis as it would on a comfortable mattress—only instead of “springs” it has fibrous proteins that give it resilience and elasticity (they are called collagen and elastin) and instead of “stuffing” it has a water-binding gel made of large sugar-based molecules (proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans). The dermis is a layer that cushions the epidermis, supplies it with water and nutrients as well as gives our skin its nice plump appearance and wonderful resilience. The dermis is only slightly thicker than the epidermis—0.03 mm on the eyelids and up to 3 mm on the back.

6. Your dermis contains a special gel—a glycosaminoglycan gel that attracts and binds water creating skin’s turgor, while collagen and elastin give it the ability to stretch and to keep its shape.

7. Your dermis is sitting on its own “mattress”—subcutaneous fat. The subcutaneous fat insulates the body and gives it additional cushioning, making it less painful for us to bump into a sharp corner. It also gives our faces and bodies their pleasant and alluring shape. When in old age fat cells start to deplete, it has a devastating effect on our appearance. So when all those slimming ads in fashion magazines urge you to declare a war on your fat, just think what would happen if it went away completely. The truth is that your skin needs subcutaneous fat—it is nothing less but the foundation of your beauty.

8. Your dermis contains blood vessels. It is because of dermal blood vessels, that skin has a healthy rosy glow and can blush from emotions. Since the epidermis does not have blood vessels, it depends on the dermal blood flow to supply it with water and nutrients. Therefore, proper circulation in the dermis is absolutely essential for skin health and beauty. Certain diseases, excessive consumption of alcohol and age related inflammation can damage blood vessels, creating spider veins and red spots.

9. Your skin contains an intricate network of nerves. Skin nerves are closely linked with its immune and endocrine system. Skin nerves not only transmit various sensations from the skin surface receptors (touch, temperature, etc), allow us to express different emotions, but they also can release signal molecules that regulate immune reactions, stress response and hormonal activity. For example, pleasant sensations in our skin are accompanied by the production of endorphins—natural anti-stress and pain relieving hormones.

10. Your skin has its own guardians. First of all, our skin is protected by the acid mantle—an emulsified mixture of sweat and skin oil. It contains a noticeable amount of lactic acid and has acidic pH of about 4.7-5.5 (neutral pH is 7.0 and above it is alkaline). In addition, the acid mantle contains antimicrobial peptides that kill bacteria and fungi. The skin oil repels water and softens our skin. It also is rich in antioxidants, protecting skin from UV-radiation. Excessive washing with harsh alkaline soaps can strip the skin from its acid mantle and increase the chance of dryness and bacterial invasion. Finally, dermal blood vessels supply immune warriors such as lymphocytes, macrophages and mast cells. This system is normally activated when the skin is wounded and blood vessels are damaged.
