Tradition holds that the Blessed Mother appeared at Mount Carmel carrying a brown scapular, offering it as a sign of her intercession and protection from the fires of hell. Scapular devotion has continued through the intervening centuries and is a popular sacramental among those devoted to Our Lady today, particularly among Carmelite orders. The typical devotional scapular consists of two small pieces of rectangular cloth (usually brown) connected by cords and worn about the neck, one placed on the chest and one on the back. Wearing the scapular serves as a continual witness of devotion to Mary and her pledge of protection, keeping her ever close to our hearts. A scapular is also an incentive and reminder to always imitate Our Lady’s virtues, especially her humility, chastity, and prayerfulness. Blessed Pope Paul VI taught that the Rosary and the Scapular are complementary devotions, imploring us to “Let the faithful hold in high esteem the practices and devotions to the Blessed Virgin approved by the teaching authority of the Church. It is our conviction that the Rosary of Mary and the Scapular of Carmel are among these recommended practices. The Scapular is a practice of piety, which by its very simplicity is suited to everyone.” – Message to the Marian Congress, March 1965. St. Sharbel, Model of Penance, Worker of Miracles In his popular book, A Year of Daily Offerings, Fr. James Kubicki, SJ, tells of St. Sharbel Makhlouf (1828-1898) whose feast is July 24: “As a Maronite Catholic youth in Lebanon, Sharbel’s favorite book was The Imitation of Christ … He became a hermit and dedicated himself to prayer and fasting in solitude. He died on Christmas Eve repeating the names of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. For more than forty days after his burial a bright light shone around his grave…” Fr. Kubicki reported that Blessed Pope Paul VI said, “This holy monk reminds us of the indispensable role of prayer, hidden virtues, and mortification.” Everywhere people report numerous miracle cures through Sharbel’s intercession. His reputation for holiness draws thousands to his shrine. In the Valley devotion to him is widespread and many favors are attributed to his intercession. Special celebrations are held locally in his honor.

Special Requests: More Help Is NeededFrom last month’s Newsletter two people replied to help us. We are so thankful, but we do need another person or two to help in various ways.

We would appreciate the response.

Catholic Books Needed for Upcoming Book SalesThis month we are preparing for the annual Marian Conference in August.

RFR will have tables of Catholic books and more.

Call us if you have Catholic books, DVDs, CDs and religious items. So far this year, we have had four very successful Book Sales

to support RFR Program.

Please help. Call Georgia 480-213-2387 or Dorothy 602-944-6811.

Pilgrimage to ItalyPlease join us for a trip of a lifetime, October 29 through November 8, 2018, to Rome, Assisi, La Verna, Ravenna, Padua and Venice. Our Spiritual Director will be Fr. Daniel Marie of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. He will celebrate daily Mass for us. Having been to Italy before, I know the memories made there

Please call or email me for more details, a full brochure or registration. Janet LaPlante 602-863-1218 or [email protected]. We would be blessed to have you as part of our pilgrim family.

What can we do for our country this month as we celebrate the 242nd birthday of our republic?

Our nation has been abundantly blessed. Some of the moral principles she was founded on are being eroded away. We, her people, need to commit to pray for her. The power of prayer should never be underestimated.

We Salute…Fr. John Vincent, OSC is celebrating his 60th jubilee of his ordination. Father offers a monthly Mass for the intentions of our listeners and supporters.

Fr. Edgar Schaefer is celebrating this year his 67th anniversary of priesthood. Several years ago, Fr. Schaefer was a frequent speaker on RFR.

Inspiring Examples: Rosary Heroes of TodayThere are many individuals who give of their time to promote Our Lady’s Rosary for the benefit of humanity.

Rosary for America: During Manny Yrique’s weekly Holy Hour at Mt. Claret, he was inspired to establish a Rosary for America. This apostolate has spread throughout the United States and is impacting the spiritual life of our country. See page 3 to order a Rosary booklet explaining the details of praying for our country or call Manny at 602-920-5065 for information on giving a presentation at your parish or organization’s meeting.

On Wednesday, July 4 there will be a Mass and Rosary for America at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. See Page 3 for details.

2,000 Hail Marys: On First Saturdays of the month, some rosary groups meet to pray 2,000 Hail Marys. One lady recently said she has been leading a group for over 30 years. Wow!

Teaching the Holy Rosary to the Young: For many years a devoted apostle of Our Lady has been teaching the Rosary to children and teens.

These Rosary apostolates represent great hope for humanity.

Special Need: A Location for Our Christmas CoffeeRadio Family Rosary needs a venue for our annual Christmas Coffee Boutique. A parish or home is needed for this one-day event in the first week in December. If you have ideas or info, please call Dorothy 602-944-6811.

Saints for Family Life Today: Anne and Joachim On July 26 we commemorate the feast day of Ss. Joachim and Anne. While we honor them both, St. Anne has been a favorite through the centuries, for she is the mother of Mary, grandmother of Jesus, patroness of mothers-to-be, mothers, grandmothers and spiritual mothers, and childless couples. Let us call upon them for help in family life today.

Good Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us.

We pray Thee, O God of might, wisdom and justice - through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are made and judgment decreed, assist with the Holy Spirit of Counsel and fortitude, the government officials for whom I now pray… teach them Thy laws, and move them to serve Thee, that their administration may be useful to Thy people over whom they preside, by encouraging respect for virtue and religion, by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy, and by restraining vice and immorality.
