What Work Is Done at a Branch Office? In some 240 lands, more than eight million Witnesses of Jehovah arepreaching the good news of God’s Kingdom in response to the commis-sion that Jesus gave his followers. (Matthew 24:14; 28:19, 20) To organizethis work, there are some 85 branch offices worldwide, all serving underthe direction of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, located inWarwick, New York, U.S.A.

Branch offices coordinate the Kingdom-preaching work and care for theneeds of Jehovah’s Witnesses within a specific geographic area. The Gov-erning Body appoints mature elders to serve as members of a BranchCommittee. As representatives of the Governing Body in their assignedterritory, Branch Committee members faithfully carry out the directioncoming from God’s Word and “the faithful and discreet slave.”—Matthew24:45-47.

The branch office supervises the activities ofJehovah’s Witnesses in the Scandinavia branchterritory in various ways.

The Service Department cares for matters re-lated to the preaching work and provides Scrip-tural guidance regarding congregation activi-ties. It also arranges conventions, assemblies, and theocratic schools. In addition, the ServiceDepartment looks after the congregation terri-tory boundaries and works closely with the Lo-cal Design/Construction Department to deter-mine where Kingdom Halls and Assembly Hallsare needed.

When medical emergencies arise, the branchoffice provides loving support and directionthrough the Hospital Information Department. This department helps Jehovah’s Witnesses toobtain competent medical treatment withoutblood and strives to promote a spirit of cooper-ation between doctors and their Witness pa-tients. The work of the elders serving on theHospital Liaison Committees (HLC) has played avital role in this effort.

Words That Touch the HeartBible truths often reach the heart more quicklywhen people read or hear Bible-based literature intheir mother tongue. Therefore, when the need arisesfor publications to be translated into additional lan-guages, branch offices make their recommendation tothe Governing Body. The Translation Department translates into six spo-ken languages and three sign languages. Remotetranslation teams prepare materials and audio/videorecordings for the preaching work, meeting and con-vention programs, our website, jw.org˙, and variousschool curriculums.

Remote Translation OfficesThe Scandinavia branch oversees six remote trans-lation offices (RTO) within its territory. The RTOs arelocated in countries and areas where the language be-ing translated is spoken. This helps the translators tobe immersed in their target language as they share inthe preaching work, attend Christian meetings, andengage in daily activities.

Building Houses of WorshipThe branch office is responsible for approving and overseeing the construction of Kingdom Halls andAssembly Halls and for ensuring that existing halls are being maintained properly. Construction iscoordinated through the Local Design/Construction Department (LDC). The LDC develops architecturalplans and works with field representatives to schedule projects. Using volunteers to build and maintainfacilities results in buildings that are economical, practical, and comfortable.

Using Donated Funds WiselyIn order to get the most value from existing facilities, the LDC arranges for Kingdom Halls to be inspectedregularly. This helps to ensure that any safety or maintenance issues are handled promptly. The LDC alsoprovides maintenance training for local congregation members.

Jehovah’s Witnesses highly esteem the wisdomfound in God’s Word, the Bible. That is why theyregularly study the Bible—at home, at Christianmeetings, and at assemblies and conventions. They agree with the apostle Paul, who summedit up well when he said: “O the depth of God’sriches and wisdom and knowledge! How un-searchable his judgments are and beyond trac-ing out his ways are! For ‘who has come toknow Jehovah’s mind, or who has become hisadviser?’ ”—Romans 11:33, 34.
