From the Principal
Welcome Back
Welcome back to Rooty Hill Public School for what will be another exciting and
fast paced year. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new
students and their families. I am sure you will find your time at our school most
rewarding and enjoyable.
As you would be aware, Mrs Malecki has taken leave this year and I will be
relieving Principal during this time. I am very excited to continue to lead our
wonderful school and would like to reassure you that we are committed to ongoing improvement
and striving towards excellence in all aspects of Rooty Hill Public School.
It is great to see all students back safe and settled into the school routine. It is pleasing to see all the
happy faces of our students and even more pleasing that they are all keen and ready to learn.
I have very much enjoyed meeting the staff, students and parents over the past week. I look
forward to working with all of our families this year to ensure that your children have the best
possible opportunities provided. We hope that your children are all happy, making friends and
enjoying school.
Swimming Carnival
The annual swimming carnival was held at Mt
Druitt Swimming Pool on Monday 3 February. This
year the carnival comprised of competitive races
with only competitive swimmers
attending. It was fabulous to see the
commitment and resilience of these students as
they strived to achieve their personal best. The
swimmers were so fast which resulted in it being
the quickest carnival I have ever been to! Thank
you to Mrs Steward for her expert organisation of
this event and for all staff and parent
volunteers who made this carnival such a
success. A great morning was had by all.

2020 School Organisation
We have welcomed back our Year 1 – 6 students last week and we have eagerly met our 2020
Kindergarten students over the past few days. After our K-6 student enrolment numbers have
been confirmed, we will be able to move into our 2020 classes on Friday 7 February. A full list of
classes and teachers will be published when 2020 classes are formed.
When forming classes each year, class structures will be determined by taking into account: teaching staff; the learning and social needs of students; the size of each ‘Year' cohort at the school; the subsequent staffing formula allocated to the school each year; as well as the most desirable placement of students so that there is minimal disruption to the learning environment and maximisation of on-task student learning time. When forming our 2020 classes it is highly likely that the organisation of classes this year will once again include composite/stage based classes. This is necessary because of the numbers of students in each grade, as well as the social and emotional wellbeing of students. Students in composite classes follow the same syllabus as those in regular classes and are common across most schools in NSW. Students in composite classes are not disadvantaged and the teachers at Rooty Hill Public School work very hard to organise classes by ensuring that “children are at the centre of all our decision-making” (NSW DoE 2018-2022 Strategic Plan). Stage teams spend a huge amount of time making sure that each and every student’s individual learning and wellbeing needs are considered. Every decision that is made is done with the student’s best interests at heart. New class groups bring the opportunity for new learning and new relationships. Remaining positive and optimistic is a productive way parents can provide their child with support and reassurance. You can support us to make your child’s transition to their new class in 2020 a smooth and positive experience by assuring them that even though they may feel strange and unsettled for a while as they get to know their new teacher and classmates, they will settle and feel better over time.
Kindergarten 2020
Our Kindergarten students have been
completing their Best Start assessments and
will continue to do so over the next few days.
This assessment provides a comprehensive
overview of the students literacy and
numeracy skills and assists teachers in
developing teaching and learning programs
that meet the needs of each individual stu-
dent. We are
looking forward to getting to know where our
Kindergarten students are at in their learning
journey and where they are going next in their
learning as we welcome them to Rooty Hill
Public School.
Meet the Teacher Evening
Next Thursday 13 February we will be hosting the Meet the Teacher Evening. Staff will be available
to meet with you informally from 5.30pm – 7.30pm in the hall. Come along to meet your child’s
2020 teacher and to ask any questions that you may have. We are very much looking forward to
seeing you there.
In addition, for all parents of Kindergarten students and families with students new to our school in
any grade, please save the date for our Welcome Evening on Thursday 12 March. This will be a
special informal evening for your whole family. More information will be provided closer to the
date.

Novel Coronavirus – Update Communicated on Monday 3 February 2020
Current advice from the Australian Government Department of Health for parents in regards to the
Novel Coronavirus is:
Any student and staff arriving in Australia from 1 February 2020 who has been in mainland China or
transited through mainland China (not just Hubei province) is excluded from school and child care
services for a period of 14 days from the date they left mainland China as the Novel Coronavirus ’
incubation period can be as long as two weeks.
Any confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus will be excluded until they are medically cleared to
return
Close contact of a confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus will be excluded for 14 days since last
contact with the confirmed case.
Any student and staff arriving before 1 February our previous advice remains that students
and staff who were in Hubei province are excluded from school or child care services for 14 days,
and those who were in the rest of China are requested not to not attend school or child care
services for a period of 14 days after leaving China.
More information can be found at NSW Health.
Students who returned to Australia from mainland China more than 14 days ago and have shown
no symptoms are able to return to school.
The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in
Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the
Ministry of Health.
There has been a small number of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in NSW.
Consistent with current guidelines, staff and students who are unwell with respiratory illness
should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any child
becomes unwell we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided
by the Ministry of Health as appropriate.
The Department of Education will continue to work with the Ministry of Health to monitor and
respond to the unfolding international novel coronavirus situation.
The Mandarin translation of this information is included in this newsletter.
