Welcome to the 2016 fall sports season at Sauk Valley Community College. In 2015, our fall sport teams once again had an outstanding year. In Golf, Jarred Hippen won the Region IV Golf Championships by 9 strokes and then finished 16th in the NJCAA National Tournament to be named 2nd Team All-American.

In Men’s Cross Country, the Skyhawks qualified Scott Heath and Peter DeLaFuente for the NJCAA Nationals. On the women’s side the Skyhawks as a team finished 2nd overall in the Region IV Championships to qualify for the NJCAA National Championships.

And in volleyball, for a second straight year, the Skyhawks both won the Arrowhead Conference Championships and qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament.

At the end of the year, due in a large part to the strength of our fall teams, Sauk Valley won the Arrowhead Conference All-Sport Award for the top conference finish overall for the second straight year. In the classroom the Skyhawks also had an outstanding performance with five Skyhawks named NJCAA Academic All-Americans for their outstanding work.

Again, in 2015 Sauk Valley student-athletes performed in all three areas of collegiate athletic competition; the classroom, the scoreboard, and representing the spirt of sportsmanship and fair play. In 2016, don’t miss the fun and excitement as our Skyhawk athletes and teams go for conference, regional, and national honors.

I look forward to seeing you this fall and thank you again for your continued support!

RUSS DAMHOFF - Athletics Director

Greetings Skyhawks,Welcome to another exciting season of Skyhawk Athletics! With the guidance and leadership of SVCC coaches and staff, our student-athletes will compete to the best of

their abilities while celebrating their love for their sport.

Last season marked my first as a Skyhawk. I was extremely impressed by the commitment, determination, and sacrifice displayed by our athletes. The displays of both academic and athletic excellence from this past season were not just thrilling . . . they were inspiring.

The Skyhawk leadership, starting at the top with Athletics Director, Russ Damhoff, is truly representative of the best Sauk has to offer. Sauk’s coaches continuously strive to teach our student-athletes the value of hard work, mental toughness, grace in defeat, and humility in victory.

Once again, our Skyhawks have set the bar high in both the athletic and academic arenas. With multiple 2015-16 NJCAA Academic All-Americans and the Arrowhead Conference All-Sport Award in our trophy case for the second year in a row, the Skyhawks have a high goal to reach.

I am confident they can match and even exceed past Skyhawk successes. I hope you will join me this season to cheer on these talented athletes to many Skyhawk victories.

GO SKYHAWKS!DR. DAVID HELLMICH - President

2016 OUTLOOKThe 2016 Skyhawk Cross Country team will have 6 women and 10 men. Eight are returning runners. The challenge of the sophomores will be to show leadership and guidance in molding the group into a successful team. This should be achievable since, as freshmen, they worked hard and were in successful area high school programs. The 2016 season consists of eight meets, including the Thirteenth Annual Skyhawk Invitational, to be held at Sauk on October 15. Last year, nine Skyhawks advanced to Nationals. This year, with larger numbers of proven potential, we hope to have even more National qualifiers. The women’s team is composed of three returning runners: Santana Estrada and Mercedes Sanchez (Sterling), and Bailie Smith (Rock Falls). We have three freshmen ladies: Jazmin Lopez (Sterling), Makaley Velazquez (Rock Falls), and Elizabeth McKee (Rock Falls). The men’s team is made up of five sophomore runners: Quincy Coomes, Chase Fisher, Cody Sondgroth (Dixon), Peter DeLaFuente (Sterling), and Bryson Reyes (Sterling Newman). The five freshmen men are Breu Knox, Dave Villa and Seth Williams (Rock Falls), Johnee Schulte (Ohio), and Nathaniel Anderson (Tampico). It will be an exciting season as we train, improve, and set and achieve high goals for the 2016 cross country year!

GO SKYHAWKS!

CROSS COUNTRY

HEAD COACH, MIKE SULLIVANNow in his 15th year as head coach of the Skyhawk Cross Country program, Mike Sullivan continues to build a running program with over 30 years of experience to his credit.

Coach Sullivan was nominated for the Women’s National 2015 Cross Country Coach of the Year. He also officiates area IHSA track meets each spring and was named the Honorary Referee for the 2016 IHSA State Meet.

As head cross country coach at Sterling High School (SHS) from 1972-96 and again in 2001, he led his teams to six conference championships, two regional titles, one sectional title, an 8th place finish at State in 1984, and a 10th place finish in State in 1979.

Coach Sullivan brings athletes along at their own pace to avoid injury and discouragement. Sullivan believes this philosophy has worked well at Sauk where he has had 58 Skyhawks qualify and compete at NJCAA national meets.

Sullivan, who retired from SHS in ’02 as a full-time instructor, served as Athletics Director from 1996-99 and taught Cooperative Work Training from 1999-2002. He was previously an instructor of Auto Mechanics and Cooperative Work Training at the Whiteside Area Career Center from 1968-96.

Sullivan holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational Education from SIU and currently resides in Sterling with his wife, Pat. They have three children, five grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.

A graduate of Prophetstown High School, Coach Damhoff earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physical Education (1995) from Northern Illinois University. He and his wife, Jackie, reside in the Dixon area where you will find them cycling and enjoying the outdoors.

ASST. COACH, NICK HARTZIn his second season as an Assistant coach for Cross Country, Nick Hartz looks to add his experience and knowledge to the very successful Cross Country program. Nick was an assistant cross country and

head track coach at Bureau Valley High School and has helped guide multiple athletes to medal at the state meets. He is also a United States Track and Field Level I certified coach and USATF Level II Coach in Endurance, Sprints, Hurdles, and Relays.

Nick is a 1996 graduate of Bureau Valley High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Monmouth College in 2000 and a Master’s of Education in Educational Psychology from the University of Illinois in 2007. He is currently a teacher at Bureau Valley North Junior High School.

ASST. COACH, MITCH SAADIn his fourth season as Skyhawk Cross Country Assistant Coach, Mitch Saad looks to further strengthen the already successful running program. In addition to competing on the collegiate level for track and field, Coach

Saad coached high school track for five seasons. Saad coached high school track and field in Peoria for three years before moving to Sterling to coach for Rock Falls High School. Coach Saad looks forward to applying his understanding of distance running to Sauk’s Cross Country program.

Coach Saad is a graduate of Erie High School ’04, and Greenville College ’08 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Management. In 2009, Saad graduated from John Brown University with a Master’s of Arts in Youth and Family Ministry.

2015-16 OUTLOOK

This year the Skyhawks are starting fresh with a full team of incoming

freshman. The Skyhawks are coming off the first Conference Championship in

almost 20 years and need to have some of the young players to step up.

Leading the freshman group is Cooper Kilberg from Rock Falls. We are looking

for Cooper to lead this young group and maintain the excellence that was

started with our graduating class. The Skyhawks are going to have to fill some

big shoes after losing All American Jared Hippen and 3 other All Conference

players. With back-to-back All American honors for Sauk and top 10 and top 20

back-to-back finishes at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, Hippen

was one of those players who doesn’t come along often.

We hope to have our young talent step up to the challenge and compete at a

high level. This could be viewed as a definite rebuilding year for the Skyhawks,

but they have the talent to rise up and surprise some people. The Skyhawks will

begin the season August 26 at Park Hills in Freeport, IL.

2016 OUTLOOKThe Skyhawk Women’s Tennis team has new and returning faces this year, ready for competition and success.

The Skyhawk’s will have four returning players from last season’s top-six spots. Sterling players Allison Shank, Macee Sullivan, and Chantel Ordean played both singles and doubles for the Skyhawk’s. Sidney Lippens (Sterling), played doubles only—all did an excellent job and have gained the experience and skills necessary to be competitive this year.

New players include Nadia Trujillo (Sterling), whose sisters Tessa and Gabi both played for the Skyhawk’s, and Emily Berogan (Sterling), whose sister Ashlyn also played for the Skyhawk’s. Tessa, Gabi, and Ashlyn were on the 2014-15 team that placed 2nd at Regionals and earned a trip to the National Tournament in Tucson in May of 2015. Nadia and Emily are also on the Skyhawk Softball team and are working hard to be competitive for Skyhawk Tennis.

Although Region IV Division I competition is tough, these women have the talent, drive, and skills to be successful. Our goal is to place in the top-three teams at Regionals. Hard work and dedication will no doubt help these players reach this goal.

This season marks Coach Sara Kipping’s 24th year as Skyhawk Women’s

Tennis coach. Kipping was inducted into the National Junior College

Association (NJCAA) Coaches Region IV Hall of Fame in 2013 and has

coached the women’s tennis program to two NJCAA Region IV titles.

Coach Kipping, who received the Region IV Coach of the Year award in

2002 and 2003, has coached teams that qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament seven times.

Her teams also boasted runner-up finishes in 2014, 1996, 1997 Region IV tournament, and third place

finishes in 1994, 1995, 2004, and 2008. Her 2001 team was named NJCAA’s Spring Academic Team of

the Year for its 3.20 GPA.

A Sauk alumna, A.A.S. in Education, and former tennis player, Kipping placed 2nd at Regionals and

was a member of Sauk’s first National Qualifying team in 1983.

Coach Kipping works for Dixon Public Schools as a Reading Paraprofessional and resides in Dixon

with her husband Bob. She is proud to have coached both of her children, and their spouses, at Sauk:

son Matthew is a state trooper and spouse, Korissa, is an RN at CGH; and daughter Katie Dempsey,

married to Dilan Dempsey, is also and an RN at CGH. All are Sauk alumni and reside in Dixon. She also

has one granddaughter, Karley Kipping.

FIVE SKYHAWKS NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANSFour sophomores and one freshman were named NJCAA Academic All-Americans for 2015-16. SKYHAWKS NAMED ALL-AMERICANS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING PLAY First, after an outstanding Volleyball season that saw the Skyhawks win the Arrowhead Conference and make their second straight trip to the NJCAA Nationals, Tressa Schuler was named Second Team All-American for her outstanding play. Schuler, now a sophomore, will return to lead the Skyahawks in 2016.

Next came an exceptional Men’s Basketball season, during which the Skyhawks won the Region IV Division I Basketball Tournament. Isaiah Box was named Third Team All-American for outstanding play that saw Isaiah lead the region in steals. Box, a sophomore, signed to play at Dalton State College in 2016-17.

And finally in May, after leading the Skyhawks to the Arrowhead Conference Championship, Jarred Hippen was named Second Team All-American for his 16th place finish at the NJCAA Division II National Golf Championships. This was the second year in a row Hippen was named All-American by the NJCAA.

FITNESS CENTER PREPARING TO MOVE TO NEW LOCATION After more than a year in their temporary location (to make way for the new Student Services Center) the SVCC Fitness Center is preparing for a new look in a new location on the south side of campus.

Sauk is partnering with the Dixon and Sterling-Rock Falls YMCA’s to provide the new facility which will include state-of-the-art equipment, friendly and welcoming areas, and a great view of the Rock River.

Programs will include wellness coaching, personal training, and group fitness classes. This partnership will also provide new opportunities for students to gain experiences through work studies and internships. The move is expected to take place sometime late in the fall 2016 semester.
