St. Matthew’s Hailey Nichols, 2016 Brotherhood of St. Andrew Scholarship Winner

The Texas Assembly of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew has announced that Hailey Nichols—a lifelong member of St. Matthew’s—is one of two 2016 Scholarship Winners. Texas A&M, Hailey's chosen university, will receive a check for $2,000 toward her college expenses.

The Creed of St Athanasius

In place of the Nicene Creed today, we used excerpts from the creed of St Athanasius. This statement of faith is attributed to the foremost Nicene theologian, St Athanasius of Alexandria, although his actual authorship is somewhat doubtful. The creed dates to at least the 5th century and is a fuller statement of our Trinitarian beliefs. It was long used alongside the Nicene and Apostles’ creeds, but has fallen out of favor over the last couple of centuries. The Anglican Church no longer uses it in our liturgies, with Trinity Sunday being the only exception; however, we do still hold on to it as part of heritage. A full version can be found in the Historical Documents Section of our Book of Common Prayer, on page 864. Submitted by Chris-tian Hawley

Registration for Men's Annual Retreat, June 3-6, 2016

“The Kingdom of God is within You … The Kingdom of God is among You”

All men of the parish are invited to attend the 2016 Men's Retreat, June 3-5, 2016, at the Well Spring Retreat Center, near Blanco, TX. Enjoy good fellowship and good food with the men of St. Matthew’s.

Travis Helms will lead the Retreat Program on “Living Into the Parables of the Kingdom.” Jesus’ parables concerning the kingdom of God are some of the most intriguing in all the Gospels. Variously described as yeast, a mustard seed, hidden treasure, a merchant searching for pearls, etc., what did the kingdom mean to Jesus; and what do his parables have to tell us about the Christian life today? Travis will take us through a close study of the texts to help uncover the deeper meaning be-hind the parables of the kingdom, and its significance for our lives and work.

Visit the Registration Table before or after Sunday 10:30 Services in May for information and registration, or access the Retreat Registration Brochure at http://s3.amazonaws.com/dfc_attachments/public/documents/3221846/St__Matthews_Mens_Retreat_Brochure_2016_v2.pdf. A Big Thank You to Our Pentecost Kitchen Team!

A big thank you to our most helpful and professional kitchen team who worked on Sat. and Sunday before and after Pentecost Luncheon.

Chef Robert was on a much needed vacation so his assistant, Chef Kate, guided us through all the preparations. Also, a very special thanks to the Holy Smokers who cooked during the night under the Huffman Hall portico as it was pouring down rain last Saturday. The chicken was delicious!

Every task was accomplished and we even went home early! Thanks to all of you for your work for Pentecost Sunday’s luncheon. Submitted by Jean Fuller

Feeding the homeless with your help

There are four ways you or your children or grandchildren can support the St. Matt’s Caritas outreach program:

Donate one non-perishable food item or a dollar a week—contact: Jane Baxter Lynn [email protected]

Volunteer at the Caritas North Pantry—contact: Nick and Linda Noy [email protected]

Join the Cooking for Caritas team or sponsor the cost of 1 month’s meal $200—contact: Frank Lynn [email protected]

Become a Caritas Food Basket bearer, a special role during Sunday service for young children—contact: Larry Richards [email protected]

If we, the 200 families who attend St. Matt’s every Sunday, bring to service one non-perishable food item for Caritas, we could give 10,000lbs of food this year to people whose lives have been diminished by poverty and homelessness in Austin.

If you weren’t able to bring an item this week and would like to contribute, you are welcome to place a $1.00 donation in the Caritas money box, near the collection baskets in the Sanctuary Commons, the proceeds from which are used to purchase food. You’re welcome to empty your pockets of any change too!

This week’s main needs for the Caritas Food Pantries are: canned ham, fruit cocktail and pineapple; cold cereals; hamburger helper-type meals, and dried pasta. The pantries could also use: shaving cream, tooth paste and tooth brushes. Please be sure

Feed My Sheep—Outreach in Action

Larry and I recently took the leftover food from the Pentecost luncheon to Casa Marianella. Casa serves as an emergency

homeless shelter for recently arrived men and women immigrants and asylum seekers. They are located in the Montopolis

area of Austin. The day we went there was a big volley ball game going on in the back yard with a middle school class who

had provided sandwiches for lunch. The two ladies in charge greeted us and were thrilled with our pans of brisket, sausage,

slaw, potato salad, beans, “poppers” and loaves of bread. There were no plans for provisions for dinner that night and St.

Matthew”s filled the need. Feeding Jesus’ sheep literally. Submitted by Margaret Carpenter

Remembrances Memorial Wall Discounts Drawing to a Close—8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. . .to the Goal of 40

If you have not yet purchased a tile for the Remembrances Memorial Wall, time is running out to get them with the $100 discount (4x8 tiles discounted to $150 and 8x8s discounted to $400).

In November 2015, the Vestry approved a proposal from the Memorial Garden Committee (MGC) to build a Remembrances Memorial Wall adjacent to the Common Urn slab, provided that the MGC sell 40 tile spaces first. The terracotta clay etched and fired tiles, either 4x8 or 8x8 inches are available to memorialize a person you wish remembered. The 4x8 tiles allow two lines of white, glazed text, while the 8x8 tiles allow four lines of the same.

For the near future, the MGC will have a table in the Commons to answer questions and sell tiles. Please contact Larry Richards, MGC Chair, at [email protected] for more information. Submitted by Larry Richards

So, what’s happening with the basement floor?

One Sunday evening, about a month ago, someone left the water running in one of the sinks in the downstairs women’s bathroom. The sink overflowed and we ended up with ½ inch of water in the women’s bathroom and in the hallway between the choir room and the AED machine (across from the acolyte vesting room). There was water damage as far as inside the men’s bathroom, too.

When we discovered the water, we called Blackmon Mooring who came in and removed all the water and the wet carpets. They also drilled holes in the walls and ran heaters and dehumidifiers for a week. We have also filed an insurance claim and are making plans for fixing the damage.

We have delayed starting the repairs to the carpet and walls because it makes good sense (financially and logistically) to coordinate the repair work with the Gratitude Together renovations to the bathrooms. Jim Michael is finalizing the bidding from our contractor and we should have a tentative schedule for repairs in a few weeks. Submitted by Chris Schumacher

Our Prayer List

Do you ever wonder how some names are on the prayer list for quite a while and others seem to be on for a short time? The St. Matthew’s policy is to keep names on the prayer list for one month only unless some other period of time is requested. Please submit your prayer requests first to our receptionists, Mickie and Margaret, by phone call, email ([email protected]), or note. They are then sent on to Christine for publishing in the Weekly Word. Submitted by Mickie Dunn

Note from Your Treasurer—Outreach $$$

To complete the 2016 Lenten Outreach Project, St. Matthew’s sent $5,907 to Heifer International for farm animals here and abroad. Before we become too righteous about this amount, be it noted that this same project in 2011 sent $12,200 to Heifer.

St. Matthew’s monetary outreach flows through three channels: (1) the Episcopal Diocese of Texas requires payment of the parish assessment so we can have a vote and seat at the annual Diocesan Council—the assessment includes St. Matthew’s share to finance missions everywhere in the Diocese, (2) St. Matthew’s voluntary outreach is financed in the operating budget mostly through the Outreach Commission, and (3) St. Matthew’s conducts some off-budget outreach financing as voluntary special projects. The recent history of annual dollar disbursement amounts below is for these off-budget projects.

Project/Activity 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015

Good Faith Fund $32,000 $38,000 $45,000 $51,000 $56,000 Heifer (Lent) $12,200 $10,300 $10,600 $ 7,100 $ 6,800 Others $ 5,000 $ 3,300 $ 1,500 $ 5,300 $ 3,500 Garage Sale, Dedicated to Outreach $ 3,000

Classified under “Others” are El Buen Samaritano Thanksgiving, Christmas Perfect Gift, Caritas Cooking and Pantry, and Angel Tree—all of which have changed their arrangements over the years.

The point of this note is that encouraging and maintaining St. Matthew’s enthusiasm for episodic outreach giving seems to wax and wane over the years. The Good Faith Fund is a favorite and everyone is very thankful. Everyone is free to choose a favorite path to sharing God’s command to serve. Submitted by Jack Robertson ([email protected])

Colorful Prayers: Open to ALL ages:

Summer is rapidly approaching and we are hopeful that you will find some time to slow down, take a deep breath, and reset. Slowing down, being quiet and prayerful, can be so difficult in our busy lives—especially for kiddos. The Family Ministry Team will be offering Colorful Prayers on Tuesdays (June 7 - August 9) from 11:30 am- 1:30 pm. Bring your kiddos or come alone; bring your lunch . . . this time will be a non-stressful opportunity to pray and create a beautiful response. All supplies are provided and many mediums will be available…painting, coloring, clay work, tissue paper, etc. You are certainly invited to bring you own creative materials as well. We will gather in B-17 and you are welcome to come and go as needed. Invite a friend, neighbor, or loved one. It is a fantastic opportunity for parents, grandparents, children and all others to beat the heat and have fellowship with friends new and old. Questions? Please contact Susan Goodman at [email protected]. Submitted by Susan Goodman

Summer Family Activities

This coming summer, the Family Ministry team will be offering Beat the Heat: Summer Movies with a Message on Tuesdays (beginning June 7) from 2:00 – 4:00 pm in the Youth Center for parishioners and friends. Bring a blanket and come watch a G-rated movie, then discuss some Christian themes woven throughout that movie. We will also be offering a Family Fun Night every Thursday evening (beginning June 9) from 6:00 – 8:00 pm in the Youth Center. We will trade off weekly playing games and watching a Movie with a Message. The schedule will come out soon and look for posters around the campus in mid-May. This will be a fun alternative for your family and a great way to meet new folks. For more information, please contact Susan Goodman, Family Minister at [email protected].

Youth Ministry News

May Youth Events — Please join us as we live into our new identity and leadership as S.O.S. Friends always welcome!

Sunday, 5/22 Youth Group. 6:00-8:00 pm in Youth Center.

Other events TBD!

S.O.S.—a letter from the Youth Group

Mission & Vision Statement: A community of fun and fellowship, exploring, growing and serving through the Power of Christ.”

Scriptural Motto: “Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea— the LORD on high is mighty” (Psalm 93:4)

On behalf of St. Matthew’s Youth Ministry, we, as elected “firsts among equals,” would like to take this opportunity to present our new Youth community name, logo and mission/vision statement.

After much prayer, discernment and conversation with Travis and the Youth Ministry Team, we have chosen the name “SOS” to represent our shared identity and beliefs.

The meaning of the name is two-fold. The primary significance harkens to the nautical abbreviation for "Save Our Ship,” and includes the alternative meanings of "Save Our Souls” and "Send Out Sustenance.”

The name is meant to suggest the circumstances in which many middle and high school students find themselves. Our world and schools can often seem confusing and chaotic. With the constant inundation of negative pressure from peers and social media, sometimes it feels difficult to stay afloat.

S.O.S. is a place where we stay spiritually buoyant and supported as a commu-nity. Through worship, formation and fellowship, we become equipped to deal with life’s challenges—and, if necessary—throw out a “life-preserver” to others in need.

A secondary meaning of our community also draws on Ephesians 6:17, which speaks of “the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God.” At S.O.S., we explore ways to let God’s Word inform and empower us as we make decisions (Additionally, there is the fact that we meet as 6th graders - 17 year olds, start our fellowship at approximately 6:17 after a few minutes of gathering for meetings (and, of course, always have “Snacks On Sundays”).

We would always be happy to tell any of you more about our community, and welcome any safeguarded adults to participate in our regular fellowship events and outreach projects.

With thanks and many blessings,

P.I.P.S.O.S. (“Princepes Inter Pares” — “Firsts among equals,” The Youth Leadership Team of S.O.S.)
