Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Dichosos los pobres de espirítu, porque de ellos es el Reino de los cielos.
Jesus offers a warning to those who pursue leisure and pleasure
as their goal in life without concern for the poor and less fortunate.
He tells the parable of the wealthy landowner who, determines that
he will live the rest of his days in relaxation; to eat, drink and be
merry. God calls the miser a “fool” and lets him know that his
greed and self-indulgence will not bring him the security he seeks.
Good stewards acknowledge that possessions entrusted to them are
to be used to further the mission of Jesus Christ.

Dale Ahlquist, founder of the American Chesterton Society, masterfully presents the genius of Catholic convert and 20th century literary giant G.K. Chesterton. He shares how this “King of Satire” predicted many of the societal ills of our day and pointed out the remedies for them. Discover the wisdom of this literary critic, playwright, novelist, Catholic theologi-an, and apologist.
Listener Comments, ““Chesterton was a wealth of wisdom and humor... I have to listen again and take notes so I can share the quotes!”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers a war-
ning to those who pursue leisure and
pleasure as their goal in life without con-
cern for the poor and less fortunate. He
tells the parable of the wealthy landowner
who, upon yielding an exceptionally pro-
fitable harvest one year, determines that
he will live the rest of his days in relaxa-

the miser a “fool” and lets him know that
his greed and self-indulgence will not
bring him the security he seeks.

From the Deacon’s desk...
(CYN) Pope Francis is set to ar r ive Wednesday in Poland, but the home-land of Saint Pope John Paul II, Fran-cis’ most popular modern-day prede-
cessor, is not rolling out the red carpet for the pontiff whose social agenda has alienated many in the conservative nation.
Francis will be in Krakow to cele-brate World Youth Day, the event initiated more than 30 years ago by Pope John Paul II in which hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the world gather. But unlike the favorite son the Eastern European nation sent to the Vatican, Francis has received a chilly reception. “The Pope, an inconvenient guest,” was the headline on an article earlier this month in Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland’s largest circulation newspaper. The event, held this year in the southern Poland city from July 27 through July 31, takes place every 2 or 3 years in a different city. In 2013, the host city was Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Who is my neighbor?
On eve of Pope Francis visit to Poland, country refuses the red-
carpet treatment By Editor, Catholic News, July 27, 2016
(Poland visit continued) Polish bish-ops circulated a letter publicizing the event that was read in churches throughout the nation on July 3. The letter praised the late Pope John Paul II three times, yet made no mention of Pope Francis “Here in Poland, a papal country, we have a very unusual situa-tion,” journalist Katarzyna Wisniew-ska wrote. “Nobody here is waiting for the pope.” Francis’ liberal social positions clash with the Polish church’s con-servative orientation and alignment with the far-right Law and Justice Party government. Church support for Law and Justice was an important factor in the party’s landslide victory in the 2015 national elections. The nationalist party is committed to de-fending the Catholic identity of a ho-mogeneous Poland. “Francis is seen as someone alien, and Poles don’t relate to an Argentini-an Pope,” journalist Adam Szos-tklewicz, who writes for Polityka, told FoxNews.com. In his first speech in the country, to an audience including President Andrzej Duda at Krakow’s Wawel Castle, the pope is expected to renew his support for refugees. Poles reject that papal call. Seventy percent of Poles don’t want any Muslim refu-gees, according to a recent survey by CBOS, a leading pollster. “It is no secret that the message of Francis is ignored by the Polish cler-gy,” wrote Jaroslaw Makowski in the May 31 edition of Poland’s edition of Newsweek magazine. “For Pope Francis, his commit-ment to the poor and disadvantaged is most important, while doctrine re-mains in the background,” Guzinski said. The Polish Church is also anx-ious about the tide of Western secular-ism. Bishop Piotr Libera, in a speech in Radom, equated secularism with multiculturalism.
