It is no wonder crafting is such an amazing thing to do! Favoured by the very young and the very old, it’s often a wonderfully calming activity that encourages a freedom of expression, developing imagination and fine motor skills.

Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery held a very special ceramics workshop at the Chinchilla Creative Centre all day Wednesday, 22nd January. The group of 15 children were kept busy as they took part in an “Arts on Grass” Workshop that was composed and quiet with the hours just melting away. It was led by talented local artist, Karen Gaskell and assisted by Helen Dennis, the volunteer director.

It is amazing to discover what can be created from what may originally seem like an uninspiring lump of clay. As soon as children are given clay, they immediately begin to mould and shape it. They become aware that they are in charge and have influence over the medium as it is quick to respond to their fingers. This activity is perhaps more challenging than it first appears but it is often a wonderfully calming and relaxing time as children become totally absorbed in the making and decoration of their work and they use plenty of creative concentration. The experience of working with clay is absolutely invaluable for sensory development, motor skills, self esteem and self expression, problem solving skills, discipline and pride. They love smoothing their fingers over the surface as they turn it around and around for inspection.

Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery is a volunteer-run art gallery which services the town of Chinchilla on the Darling Downs in Queensland. The Gallery has been an integral part of the Chinchilla Civic Centre since its opening in 1999.

Activities at the Gallery include presenting new artworks from local and visiting artists, touring exhibitions, official exhibition openings, guided tours for community groups and schools, arts and crafts for kids, workshops for artists and a main gallery space for major monthly exhibitions, with a secondary gallery, the Outer Bark Gallery, for community groups and teen artists. There is also lots of information sharing about the arts in our local community through its Newsletter and Facebook page.

Please make sure to keep your eyes open for another amazing workshop in another month. So much fun for all involved!

Over 400 Young Australian's celebrated at the much anticipated Brigalow Randy Rabbits and Prickly Pear B&S Ball and Ute show on the Australia Day weekend.

Much time and effort went into putting together this fantastic and fun filled event for all to enjoy, at the Brigalow Recreational Grounds.

The rabbit fence that runs through Brigalow and the history of the Prickly Pear in the local area were very fitting to name the event, with of course a bit of fun thrown in!

Youngsters travelled from near and far to join in the Australia Day Festivities and the young camaraderie. It was great to see everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves and putting their throttles to the test in the ute show.

The event started after lunch on Saturday with old time Aussie novelty events such as 'Egg and Spoon Race', 'Sack Race' and Mud boot throwing', 'Water Boy' and progressed into the evening, with the B&S Ball, with live entertainment from 'Mick Lindsay and Band'.

Along with dancing, the youngsters showed their skill with riding the mechanical bull and bouncy boxing and slipped their way through the jelly wrestling.

Many thanks go out to the Brigalow Bush Carnival Sub-Committee. The proceeds raised from the event will go towards a new canteen at the recreational grounds and assist with the running of their annual bush carnival to be held at the Grounds in September 2014.

From the EditorHappy LOVE month! We have a very romantic ‘Valentine’s Day Edition’ for you this month. Our new journalist, Ann Alcock, has written a beautiful story on the history of St Valentine’s Day and you can read this on page 27 of this edition.

Australia Day was celebrated in Chinchilla at the Chinchilla Historical Museum, with events and activities for all ages. Read about what happened in Chinchilla on the 26th January on pages 6 and 7.

On a more serious note, Western Downs Magazines have decided to lend a hand to a magnificent charity; ‘Aussie Helpers’. This organisation is carrying out invaluable work in drought affected regions of Queensland and New South Wales. They are running initiatives such as ‘Buy A Bale’ to lend a hand to those who need it at the moment. You can read all about the ongoing devastation that is affecting farmers right on our doorstep and find out how you might be able to help on pages 12-13. These stories may bring a tear to your eye, but we need to do something to bring this situation to light.

Until next month, let’s pray for rain.

AUSTRALIA DAY

Australia Day c o m m e m o r a t e s the establishment of the first European settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788. It is an opportunity for Australians to come together to celebrate our country, culture and thoughts on what makes Australia great. It’s a day of fun for all, with the highlight for families being the summer playground with many packing a picnic and sunscreen and heading to their favourite spot to enjoy all the action. There are reflections on the achievements of the nation and explorations of ways to make our country even better for future generations.

The Australia Day in Chinchilla was celebrated in style by the Western Downs Council hosting an official ceremony and presentation at the Chinchilla Historical museum on Sunday 26th. Local Rotarians did a tremendous job cooking up bacon and egg breakfast from an early hour and the museum crew kept the kids happy with their exciting mini-rail adventure through the museum grounds.

Ambassador, Professor David Tudehope, presented the local and regional winners of the Australia Day official community awards. Those Australians and a community group made an outstanding positive contribution to our region. Their commitment, endless generosity and massive accomplishments show values that shape our nation.

On a personal note, with this being my first Australian Day as an Australian Citizen, the reflections on our history and visions towards our future fills me with a sense of pride and acknowledgment of the freedoms which we all enjoy.

Chinchilla ToastmastersMembers from Chinchilla Toastmasters’ Club attended the Area 31 Conference and Leadership training in St George on the 18th and 19th January. Robyn Mapp and Julie Grimes represented our local club in the four competitions - International, Humorous, Table Topics and Evaluation. Area 31 takes in four clubs - Roma, St George, Tara (Country Chatters) and Chinchilla. The International Contest is a 5 to 7 minute speech on any topic in which the speaker competes at every level and may have a chance to compete against Toastmaster members

world-wide. This was won by David Bowden of Roma. Robyn Mapp gave some heat to the competition with her speech on ‘Fire Walking’. The Humorous Contest, also 5 to 7 minutes, was won by Julie Grimes with a speech about the joys of camping titled ‘Under the Stars’. Table Topics is a 1 to 2 minute impromptu speech where the speaker has only a few seconds prior knowledge of the topic, which was “Is it more charitable to give money or your time?”. This was won by Stella Baxter of St George. Evaluation is the heart of Toastmasters where feedback is given to speakers in a positive and constructive way. In the time frame of 2 to 3 minutes, this contest was won by Ann Smith of Country Chatters. The four winners will go on to compete for Western Division level at Goondiwindi in March.

Training club members to improve their leadership skills was organized by Robyn Mapp for the Sunday following the Conference. President Ian Sperling and four others attended this varied, informative and entertaining day.

Leadership in Toastmasters’ Clubs is shared by several executive members who have different roles and work together for the success of the club and its members.

Chinchilla Toastmasters’ Club is a non-profit organization. We provide a supportive and positive learning experience. Members are empowered to develop their communication and leadership skills. This results in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

We meet the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 7:30pm at the Chinchilla RSL. Contact Ian 0429639156 or Linda 46628504 a/h.

Chinchilla Police ReportOverall, it was a busy Christmas and New Year period for us all here at Chinchilla Station. Unfortunately, it has been a horror start to the year in the South West District on the roads, with several fatal and serious injury crashes since the start of the year. Being only three weeks into the year, I would take this opportunity to reiterate the need for people to pay attention when driving on the roads. We, as police, lose count of the times that we see the outcome of a simple period of inattention resulting in serious traffic crashes. It seems that all too often people take the simple act of driving somewhere way too lightly, often with dire consequences for the victims, families and communities. Whilst on the topic, Chinchilla has had only three drink drivers caught since the start of the year. While I would like to see zero, this is a move in the right direction from previous months. I, personally, take great offence at the fact that people still think they have the right to drink drive. This stupid and selfish act is often done with absolute intent and shows a total lack of regard for all other road users and members of the community.

We have also made a number of arrests over the past month in relation to drug offences around town, with a recent amphetamine lab and a quantity of amphetamine being discovered in Nowland Street, Chinchilla during a search warrant. This is particularly concerning in a residential area given that these labs are very volatile and often result in large explosions. Drugs continue to be a scourge in our communities and can almost always be linked to property crime within the area. Since mid December, police from Chinchilla station have executed ten search warrants at numerous addresses in town resulting in 15 people being arrested on 27 drug related charges. Several of these charges have resulted in persons being charged with supplying

a dangerous drug resulting in local dealers being taken off the Street. We do rely on information concerning drug activities coming in from the community, so please, if you do see or hear something suspicious, please let either Crime stoppers or the local station know. Of course, all information can be provided anonymously if you wish.

Chinchilla Station is set to have its facelift commencing mid March, 2014 and is expected to continue for six weeks. During this time, there will be some disruptions to services provided, however, we ask for your patience whilst this is occurring. Unfortunately, we have been reduced from two administration officers to one, and the demand for Queensland Transport services has increased exponentially over recent years. Mel does the best she can do with the huge workload that Queensland Transport duties impose, along with the day to day station administration, so please be patient and understanding. Also, remember that Queensland Transport has offices in Dalby and Toowoomba, so maybe time your QT business with your next out of town trip.

Pelican Cup ShowThe Pelican Rural Fire Brigade is combining its Annual Pelican Cup Show and Shine/Car Boot Sale day with the Centenary of the Pelican Hall. On Saturday, 22nd March, the Pelican Centenary Cup will be held at the Pelican Hall, 888 Burra Burri Creek Road, Pelican (just 9km off the Chinchilla-Wondai Road).

The hall was built in 1914 by locals and was a great place for a dance and for catching up with old mates and the latest gossip.

Organiser, Mandy Bray, said, “We are hoping that locals will share their old district photos. We want to have a photo display of the history around the Hall, with ribbons and certificates for the best photos. So, don’t forget those little embarrassing moments or the romantic moments, anything to do with the Pelican Hall and community.” Anyone who would like to participate should contact Mandy on 0427083740.

Scot Hordern, Chinchilla Auto and Motor Group President and two times winner of the Pelican Cup said, “Our car club is all revved up and ready for the day, and it was great to hear the Chinchilla Ute Club is coming for the

day and possibly the Roma, Miles and Dalby Car Clubs as well.”

The Chinchilla Auto and Motor Group comes to the day to support the fundraiser for the local Rural Fire Brigade. “It’s all for fun and to show support and, of course, the cars and motors,” Scot said. There will be trophies for People’s Choice Best Car, Best Ute and Best Working Stationary Motor and ribbons for the children’s competitions.

These will include colouring-in competitions for the under-threes, a drawing competition for the older children, a prize for the biggest yabby and a yabby race. Food and drinks will be available, a jumping castle, face painting, displays, as well as stalls in the Car Boot Sale.

Set-up starts at 7am, gates open 8am on Saturday, March 22. There will be a $5 entry fee for all vehicle and motor entrants and a stall fee of $5 or $10 undercover. For more details, contact Scot Hordern on 0419684699 or Mandy Bray on 0427083740

Compact Prints 2012During March, the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery, in conjunction with our local Chinchilla Arts Council group, will be presenting an exciting collection of contemporary prints in compact cases by Australian and International artists.

Curated by Umbrella Studio, the one hundred and sixty-six prints showcase the works of North Queensland’s printmaking talent, alongside National and International artists from twenty-two countries. Framed by mounted CD cases, the works are etched, scratched, watermarked, stamped, rolled, blocked-in and engraved, each carrying a story of its own.

This small-sized art invites close inspection. The range of themes, textures and colours awaken your senses. The collection displays a variety of traditional and digital works including relief, intaglio, serigraph and new media printmaking. With no limits except size, the topics, textures and colours will inspire experimentation in a variety of print forms. Compact Prints 2012 is a collection of stunning work from our global community of printmakers.

Compact Prints is a signature exhibition of Umbrella Studio and was first launched in 2002. Due to overwhelming interest from overseas in 2004, the exhibition expanded into an International collaboration with nearly 140 participants. In 2010 and 2011, Compact Prints 2008 and 2010 toured throughout regional Queensland and NSW as part of Artslink OnTour Exhibition Program. Artslink Queensland (Queensland Arts Council) has always been dedicated to bringing quality visual arts into regional and remote areas, supporting Queensland artists and communities in celebrating their creativity and diversity.

Umbrella Studio Director, Vicki Salisbury, says, “Travelling a high quality exhibition of International printmakers to new audiences in Asia fits within our core business and is a very thrilling project. Our aim is to raise the profile of North Queensland artists and Umbrella Studio locally, nationally and internationally”.

Great for school groups and art connoisseurs alike, this exhibition has something to please every visitor. School groups are invited to book tours through the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery Director, Helen Dennis.

Compact Prints 2012 will be shown at the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery from Saturday, 1st March, 2014 to Wednesday, 26th March, 2014 at 4pm. You are invited to the preview to be held on Friday, 28 February at 6:30pm.

What’s Happening at the Gallery?

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery is running its own 12 x 12 Challenge, with local identities, businesses, schools and community members invited to participate with an image using any medium

that will fit into a CD case. Some of the images will be offered for sale at $12 each and proceeds will go to local charities. Our local kids and teens will also have an opportunity to have a go at printmaking with an ‘Arts on the Grass’ Workshop planned for a Saturday in March. There will be two workshops – one for younger children and one for teens. More details on both events can be obtained from the Gallery or on our Facebook page.

Back to Black

Calling all local artists, craftworkers, woodturners, dressmakers, jewellery makers, piecemakers, cake decorators and other creative people! Final details for our May Showcase Exhibition ‘Back to Black’ are ready to roll out! If you’re local or have local connections, then you are eligible to participate. Brochures can be picked up at the Gallery, or email a request to us for one. No fees, no prizes, no competition – just having a lot of fun getting your work ‘out there’ to the public! All ages are catered for.

Rebirth of Outer Bark Gallery

Following a year’s trial of a Teen Gallery concept, we have found it to be an overwhelming success with schools, community groups and the occasional young artist, displaying their work. We have decided to continue with offering the space for free exhibitions to the general public, but are reverting back to the original name, as it fits in with how it was used in 2013. We again invite local groups, schools and individual young artists to display their artworks in 2014. Bookings can now be made at the Gallery.

Yesterday I posted a rant on our facebook page about the mental suffering of graziers and all farmers alike in this terrible drought we are enduring at this time. To illustrate my point, I used a photo of my gorgeous kelpie blue dog cross, Lolli. She was and is suffering from an unknown illness, one that looked like it would take her very life and still could. This morning she is much improved though, and hopefully she continues to do so, after extremely valuable advice received from Breaker. She even finished her milk this morning, and smacked her lips with a little more life in her eyes.

My point in yesterdays post is that you really cannot know the amount of hardship, and the terrible choices that must be made on a farm in drought unless you have physically been there yourself, and made those choices.

It’s almost impossible to explain with words the trauma of a decision where your choices are bad, very bad and just plain awful. But one thing I learnt (the only useful thing I have learnt) from animal activists websites and facebook pages, while I was trying to fight the anti-farmer movement, is this take a picture, give suffering a face, and people can empathise.

I saw many photos of cattle, maybe a single brahman steer, lovely and quiet looking, they gave it a name, one I know they decided to call ‘Jacob’ and then told a story about how he was brutalized and cruelly murdered in some overseas abattoir. Then they point the finger at Australian farmers and say ‘its all their fault’ This is not the point of my post today, but its very easy to see how people get so upset about Live Export

with such a visual motivator.

So yesterday my motivator was the image of my own wonderful dog suffering, and people have responded! The response has been greater than imagined, though the response we got from the picture of Bustas empty collar should have given me some sort of clue, seen by over 90,000 people, liked and shared so many times! I wish I could tell our

mate how many people have grieved for him.. It would blow his humble doggy mind.

I have turned down many many offers for financial support, people who want to pay the vet fee to save my little dog, and I so appreciate every single one of them! I am not turning them down out of pride, or some misguided sense of martyrdom.. I say no, because I am only one person, only one insignificant farmers daughter in a country filled with people more needy, the grazier who is so broke he cannot afford to buy hay to keep his five year old daughters pony from starving. The sheep farmer who has to make a choice to buy more drench for his dying sheep, or put food in his childrens’ mouths for one more week.

The man who, with $100 left to his name, must decide if he will buy one more bale of hay for his favourite cows, or a carton of bullets to put them all down. Its no wonder so many of these hurting, broken men turn the rifle on themselves after the grisly job is done.

If all I can do is share the photos of the things which break our hearts every single day, then see these pictures. A baby lamb named Choppa pulled from a bog hole, the only survivor out of seven sheep, and 15 kangaroos, Choppa died after three days of love and care in the houseyard.

A calf called Geoff, pulled from a dam, where he was stuck beside the dead body of his mother,

and named after a wonderful man, born malnourished, he looked more like an 80 year old POW than the two week old baby he was. We fought for him so hard, only to lose him three weeks later.

An old cow struggles to stand, she was a much loved old girl, one of our special ‘MJ’ cows.. One day she stood up, the next I helped her up, the day after, my little brother dragged her body away. My brother is 19. Why should he have to face that sort of thing, when others his age are partying and living life to the fullest? Other boys are travelling, having fun, getting first jobs and going to uni. My brother is a man beyond his years, he has seen more and suffered more than most men twice his age.

My sister is 21, girls her age are going to the beach and debating whether or not to wear that dress. My sister, doesn’t care what she wears, so long as she doesn’t have to see another animal in distress today.

If seeing these images hurts you, or makes you feel sad, only imagine what it does to the minds and emotions of the men and women who see them in real life every day, those who fight to change the inevitable, those who work against all odds to save a life, or to help an animal who is suffering.

Its difficult enough every day, but to do it with debt, or no money like so many graziers are trying to do right now? Impossible. My father’s

voice when our pet cow comes to him for food in the paddock, and he rubs her neck and apologises to her softly, ‘I’m so sorry girl, I cannot feed you today’.

There is emotional damage occurring in the bush today, and if you can spare a moment, spend a moment.

Buy locally grown, support Aussie beef, Aussie lamb, pay an extra dollar for something direct from the grower.

And most of all, Thank God for the Aussie producer. They do it tough, they feel forgotten, and misunderstood. But every day I see more people standing up to say ‘hey, we see you, we appreciate you, we support you’

Tougher Water Restrictions for Western Downs Towns Water supplies across the Western Downs continue to drop due to consumption, hotter temperatures and lack of significant rainfall this summer, leading to Brigalow, Chinchilla, Tara, and Warra moving to tougher water restrictions from midnight this Friday, 24 January.

Council Spokesperson for Utilities – Water, Wastewater and Gas Councillor George Moore said some water supplies across the region have dropped below trigger levels, forcing Council to implement tighter water restrictions.

"The Western Downs has received minimal rainfall this summer and unless the predicted late season rain arrives, we're likely to continue to move to tougher water restrictions, as they help

to minimise water consumption which helps manage the remaining water supply," he said.

"As of midnight this Friday, Warra residents will move to Level Two restrictions; Brigalow, Chinchilla, Jandowae and will move to Level Three restrictions; and Tara will move to Level Four restrictions.

"For Brigalow, Chinchilla, and Jandowae this means that residents can no longer use sprinklers, whilst across the region the restriction of no watering on Mondays is still in effect.

"Customers can obtain complete details of permitted activities under each restriction level by visiting the Council website or calling 1300 COUNCIL."

Council officers will be monitoring adherence to the program through regular patrols.

SQCHA – Chinchilla Cutting Show - All Welcome!

As part of the Chinchilla Sub-Committee, we often get asked by the local community to let everyone know when the cutting is on. It’s also a good opportunity to thank our great sponsors who have supported our annual Southern Queensland Cutting Horse Association Chinchilla event. These include: Landmark - Chinchilla, Equivet – Southbrook, Wood Ag – Chinchilla,

International Animal Health – Brisbane.

Chinchilla Cutting is really fortunate to have:

A natural sand arena at the Chinchilla Showgrounds

Great cattle, kindly supplied by local cattle producers

Home cooked canteen put on by Chinchilla Performance Horse Club.

Regular competitors often comment on the terrific arena surface and marvellous cattle available for competition. Beginner classes kick

off Saturday morning. So, if you are interested in how to get started competing in cutting, come and check out these classes. Preworks for this year’s futurity horses will be held Friday afternoon. This is an opportunity to see professional trainers getting their young horses used to competition conditions.

The event is also the annual fundraiser for the local performance Horse Club who provides great cooked meals from Friday afternoon to the end of the show.

So, if you are interested in seeing some awesome horses go head to head with local cattle, then come on down to Chinchilla Showgrounds over the weekend from 8th to 9th March, 2014.

Some ladies will do anything for a good cause!

When Annie’s husband John dies from leukaemia, she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new sofa in the local hospital waiting room.

They manage to persuade four fellow Woman’s Institute members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar. With their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements, and a little help from the hospital porter and an amateur photographer they complete their calendar. The calendar is a huge success but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.

Based on a true story, Calendar Girls became the fastest selling play in British theatre history and a worldwide hit, showing one night only at the Empire Theatre.

Happy New Year from Charley's PlaceWelcome to Charley's Place Early Learning College in 2014

Charley's Place promote and believe that all children are our future. We will endeavour to provide a safe, clean and caring environment and encourage family relationships and community involvement. We believe through play, children explore, experiment, enjoy and discover their physical, social, emotional and intellectual world around them. We embrace, respect and accept children from different cultures, religions and lifestyle.

The Curriculum includes the care and education of children from birth to school entry age. It also recognises the importance of the learning environment provided for our children as having a significant influence on their education and development now and in the future.

You can expect not only the fundamentals such as language, literacy and numeracy, but art, music, social and life skills, problem solving and investigation – within an environment and curriculum designed especially to meet each developmental level.

Daily structures are flexible to accommodate children’s changing needs. They involve individual, small group and whole group tasks with a balance

of indoor and outdoor, as well as quiet and active activities.

Sustainable practices plays a core role in driving our educational program. We value the resources we use and look at ways to interact with our environment in a way that models to our children practices that are sympathetic to the environment and minimise our impact.

We are very fortunate to have a space at the centre dedicated to sustainable practices and it is in this area that we have placed our chook pen, veggie gardens, worm farm and compost bins. The benefit of having this space is that it influences what we do in the rest of the centre.

At Charley's Place all your child's needs are catered for, a nutritious morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are provided by our very own Master chef. Nappies and wipes are also supplied for our younger groups. Charley's Place is opened 52 weeks a year Monday to Friday from 6.00am - 6.00pm.

Business

We know the days can be long and a farmer’s work is never done.

We’re not just accountants. We’re your business adviserand your sounding board.

Whether you’re starting out on your first property, building up the farm, planning to retire, or transitioning to the next generation.

we’re with you every step of the way.

Planting Seeds for SuccessionWhether you’re a farmer, a retailer, a manufacturer or a service provider, you should be succession planning. You may be a long time off retirement, but planning early will help you achieve a smooth transition to your golden years.

As the old Chinese Proverb says “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

A succession plan is a strategy you put in place to identify and develop the next person/s to lead your business. That could be an employee you are grooming, an investor you are courting to purchase the business or a family member from the next generation who is taking the reigns.

No matter what your succession path looks like, there are two key aspects you have to get right:

1. The technical details. Succession planning is not a one-off event. It is a process, and it can take years. Are assets owned by the right entities, are you using the right business structures? It’s a little like chess. You need to always be looking several moves ahead while you continue to adapt constantly

to the changing e n v i r o n m e n t around you. Having experts who can help you navigate technicalities like capital gains tax, s u p e r a n n u a t i o n and aged care rules can make a big difference. Be sure to involve your solicitor and accountant in your planning right from the start.

2. Communication. Your personality, upbringing, values, education and stage of life will all have a bearing on how you view things and how you communicate with others. Recognise and enjoy your different perspectives. Be honest. If you aren’t openly sharing, then people will start to make their own (often wrong) assumptions about what you are planning. Be kind to each other. It can be wise to use a skilled negotiator, to work through issues and towards agreed

approaches.

Succession planning takes commitment, patience, specialist assistance, and constructive debate to climb hurdles and identify opportunities. With the right approach, nothing is insurmountable. And remember, the best time to start is now.

David Briese will be sharing more tips at The Farmer Wants a Life seminars being held during February. www.thefarmerwantsalife.com.au.

St Valentine’s DayFor incurable romantics St Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. How will you show your love to that special person in your life?

St Valentine’s day is steeped in history and tradition. The origins remain shrouded in mystery but one legend dates it back to the Roman times. Emperor Claudius II believed that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families and so he forbade marriage for young men. Valentine is said to have defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Prior to his execution he was visited in prison by a young girl and before his death is said to have written her a letter which he signed “from your Valentine”, an expression we continue to use today. The oldest known valentine still in existence is a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt.

For many years people continued to declare their love with individual hand written notes. These have largely been replaced by commercial greeting cards and the digital age has given us e-cards. Now there are apps to help you plan your complete Valentine event on your smart phone or tablet.

The traditions of giving flowers, especially long-stemmed red roses, and heart-shaped chocolates in red-lined boxes are still among the most popular ways of showing one’s love on Valentine’s Day. Candle-lit dinners, jewellery and romantic weekends also rate highly.

Five romantic and fun things to do on St Valentine’s Day:

1. To help your love last all year spend some time together writing romantic ideas on slips of paper. Place them in a box and each partner takes one out every alternate week and has to implement the idea during the following week.

2. Use an iOS app to make your own personalised video greeting.

3. Give your partner a love coupon. This is a promissory note between lovers to agree to do something romantic at some date in the future.

4. Make a list of the top 10 reasons why you love your partner.

5. Take a bubble bath with candles and champagne.

Happy St Valentine’s Day!

Ann Alcock

Curves Chinchilla is Offering 30 Days Free Membership During February…The end of the school holidays has arrived and now’s the perfect time to spend a little time on yourself, refresh and have fun. Curves Chinchilla wants to encourage you to get more out of your summer, “whether you’re shopping downtown, working a full week, or juggling a busy family, imagine what a little more stamina and energy could do for you! Curves can give you the extra oomph that you need.”

But Anne from Curves Chinchilla understands that summer holidays can impact household budgets. To help local women choose good health, Curves Chinchilla will not only reduce the new member service fee by 50 per cent for those who join in February but, as an extra incentive, new members won’t pay monthly fees for a month.

With the proven Curves 30-minute circuit, you will work every major muscle group and burn up to 500 calories a workout. Some have called it the perfect workout, but Curves Chinchilla is willing to let you try free for 30 days to find out for yourself.

In addition, to spice up your workout, Curves Chinchilla offers Curves® Circuit with Zumba®

Fitness. “This is an amazing, wildly effective workout that will really help people stick to their New Year’s resolutions,” said Curves Chinchilla owner, Anne Cardillo. “It’s definitely NOT your Mother’s workout—BUT even your Mother can do it! We combine Curves’ proven strength-training program—where you can burn up to 500 calories in just 30 minutes—with the Latin and International inspired music and exhilarating, simple dance moves that have made Zumba® so popular.”

All ages, fitness levels and dance abilities can participate in and benefit from Curves® Circuit with Zumba® Fitness classes. During the 30-minute class, participants work out on each Curves strength machine for one minute, alternating upper, lower and core muscles. After one minute, the music cues the participant to change stations on the circuit, and she moves to an area between machines to do Zumba® moves, which tone and sculpt the body while burning fat. A licensed Zumba® instructor from the Zumba® Instructor Network (ZIN) teaches simple, modified Zumba® moves from the centre of the circuit.

The benefits of Curves® Circuit with Zumba®

classes are numerous, according to Curves Director of Exercise and Research, Katie Mitchell. “This is definitely a boredom-busting workout,” said Mitchell. “There’s a lot going on to keep your attention and keep you motivated. You’re listening to high-energy music that just makes you want to move, watching to make sure you’re meeting your goals on the strength machines and training your body and your brain by learning new dance moves. And research shows that the dynamics of group exercise like the Curves® Circuit with Zumba® Fitness classes promotes attendance and lowers drop-out rates, so people are more likely to stick with it.”

Whether you’re interested in getting more exercise to have increased energy and stamina or to lose weight and tone muscles, Anne says, “Give us 30 minutes, three times a week and we’ll show you that Curves works.”

Sugar, the Most Dangerous Drug of All? Last month I delivered some vital information to you. In the Special January Edition of the Western Downs Magazine I outlined the Top Ten Chemicals To Avoid in your personal care products. Many of these chemicals are very popular in everyday products and by avoiding them you could prevent conditions such as cancer, depression, insomnia, birth defects, organ failure, psoriasis, eczema and many other health issues.

This month, we put the spotlight on sugar. Sugar is becoming a major concern in the medical community and has recently been described as ‘the most dangerous drug of our time’ by Paul van der Velpen, head of Amsterdam’s respected health service.

Now we have all heard about the risks of obesity and diabetes being the result of a high consumption of sugar. But did you know that there 146 negative effects sugar can have on your health? Nancy Appleton PhD. a clinical nutritionist has completed a study exploring the effects of sugar on our health and found 146 health issues directly resulting from the consumption of sugar. Some of these include:

• Sugar can decrease growth hormone (the key to staying youthful and lean)

• Sugar feeds cancer

• Sugar increases cholesterol

• Sugar causes food allergies

• Sugar can contribute to eczema in children

• Sugar can impair the structure of DNA

Addressing similar issues the World Health Organisation released a warning based on research published in January 2013 proving that high-sugar diets lead to weight gain. The corollary of weight-gain, of course, is obesity, and all the attendant health issues that condition raises, including heart disease, cancer, hypertension and decreased life expectancy. And as if that wasn’t enough, another study published in the European Journal of Nutrition points to a link between high sugar intake and a much greater risk of depression.

Above all this research the one point that concerns me the most is that sugar feeds cancer. Science Daily states that certain sugar molecules are present in very high numbers in cancer cells. It now turns out that these sugar molecules are not only present but actually aid the growth of the malignant cells. The fact that cancer rates in Australia are now 1 in 3 people, you would think that our nation would sit up and take notice. But many continue on in life in denial, “that won’t happen to me!”

Not only is sugar aiding the death of our family and friends but there is the growing conviction that sugar is a highly addictive substance and one which creates cravings we find hard to control. Megan Douglas, a renowned naturopath and founder of World Organic, brings to light in one of her recent articles the results of scientific studies, which reveal that whilst people eating fats and proteins will stop when they are full, they will keep eating if they are consuming sugars, no matter their level of satiety. Perhaps even more frightening, French researchers in Bordeaux also reported recently that laboratory rats chose sugar over cocaine, despite the fact that they were already addicted to cocaine!

Dr Mehmet Oz suggests a four-pronged, four-week approach to freeing yourself from sugar

addiction:

1. Eat a balanced breakfast with protein and fibre to stave off sugar cravings later in the morning.

2. Eliminate hidden sugars around your house. Common household foods that contain hidden sugar include peanut butter, mayonnaise, pasta sauce and yogurt.

3. Use alternative sweeteners such as agave or stevia.

4. Trick your taste buds by finding ways to replace the sugar with something else, such as cinnamon.

Alternatively, try starting with the new Queensland Health campaign, “Don’t stop it, just swap it!” Swap soft drink and juice for water. Swap regular sugared tea and coffee for herbal teas. Swap a sweet biscuit or cake snack for a piece of fruit. Swap regular chocolate for dark chocolate with 80%+ cocoa.

I want to leave you with one thought… if every type of food and drink that contains sugar carried a warning label that read:

“This product is addictive and may cause depression, cancer, cardiovascular disease, allergies and eczema.”

Would you purchase the product? Would you feed it to your child, grandchild, or even your dog?

Start addressing the sugar addiction in your home today!

Question: Does my child have a vision related learning problem? Answer:A large part of learning is done visually and at distances less than arm’s length which can be stressful to the visual system. This is particular relevant with the increase in use of tablets and computers by children at all ages.

It follows that even a minor reduction in visual efficiency can cause significant problems with learning. Examples of strategies that children adopt to compensate include:

• Avoiding near work and reading • Attempting to do work, though with

lowered understanding • Complaints of discomfort, fatigue or short

attention span• Adverse visual adaptations such as myopia

or astigmatism.

Local Talents Commit to Chinchilla Dental PracticeOne of Chinchilla’s most longstanding local businesses has experienced some exciting changes over the past few months. A definite local flavour is now apparent at Chinchilla Dental Practice, as late last year, Dr Gina Irwin and her husband, Wes, became part-owners of the practice in Middle Street. Also, Mr Brad McCormack recently started his CDP journey as a dental hygienist/therapist. Dr Irwin and Mr McCormack are proud to call Chinchilla home and love the rural lifestyle.

The Chinchilla Dental Practice has been operating since 1951 with the lion’s share of work at the practice undertaken by members of the Clarke family. For decades, CDP was owned and operated by Dr Ian Clarke who was joined by his son, Donald, in the late 70’s. Donald’s mother was also a dentist, predominantly working as the government dentist. Donald’s wife, Lindy, has been another crucial factor in the development and growth of CDP, overseeing many changes, including the employment of more staff and several renovations.

Dr Gina Irwin began her time at CDP in 2001. Prior to this, Gina attended Chinchilla State School, where she was School Captain. Gina was also very successful during her time at Chinchilla State High School, having the honour of achieving Junior and Senior Dux and School Captain. After school, Gina enrolled in a Bachelor of Dental Science at UQ, eventually achieving

Honours (Class 1) at the end of 1999. After one year with Queensland Health in Roma, she contacted Don and Lindy Clarke, who were coincidentally at that time, searching for a female dentist. The relationship has blossomed from there over many years. Gina married another local, teacher, Wes Irwin in 2001 and they have three children, Fletcher, Rupert and Zali.

Mr Brad McCormack was born and raised in Chinchilla, also choosing to study in Brisbane. Brad graduated late last year, and during that time, he was already negotiating with the Clarkes to return to his hometown to polish his skills and provide a great service. Brad is looking forward to working in such a supportive work environment. He is already enjoying connecting with familiar faces as well as seeking the guidance of experienced mentors in Dr Clarke, Dr Irwin and CDP’s third dentist, Dr Andrew Sharpe. “The Clarkes and dentistry in Chinchilla go hand in hand. They’ve been strong contributors to the community for decades and I’m excited to join a practice with so much proud history,” Mr McCormack said.

Dr Irwin is also overjoyed to have a stronger commitment to CDP and a more concrete working relationship with Donald and Lindy Clarke.

“Don and Lindy have set themselves challenges and ambitious goals over the past few decades and have met with great success. I’m really humbled to work alongside them. The Clarke family have left such a

legacy in Chinchilla and they’ve been such a pleasure to work for, and now, with,” Dr Irwin said.

“I’ve enjoyed my thirteen years at CDP as an employee and I’m looking forward to many years as an owner. I just love helping people, making people smile, whitening teeth, straightening teeth and seeing whole families from grandparents, parents to children,” she said.

Donald and Lindy are really impressed with the team at CDP at the moment. The local flavour is a wonderful bonus. “We welcome Gina to the team as a part-owner and we’re blessed that Brad chose to come home; he’s fitting in brilliantly,” they said.

Chinchilla Dental Practice is at 50 Middle Street, Chinchilla. The practice can be contacted on 46628311. They also have a website, www.chinchilladental.com. The practice is also on Facebook.
