Science Fair On Tuesday the 18th August, students in year 7 and 8 took part in our first Science Fair. This event was registered as a National Science Week event. It involved all of the students, who had been completing investigations over a number of weeks. The students selected their own topics and used the scientific method to compile results. There was a wide variety of burning questions investigated such as: Who makes the best chips in Esperance? What will be good fuels for the future? Who makes the tastiest pie? Does water quality affect plant growth? Students completed their research and displayed their findings on display boards in the school gym. They also had the opportunity to use different software programs, ipads, and laptops to display their work. The winners will be announced very soon. Parents/carers, members of the community and local primary school students attended this amazing event! The students enjoyed the day and the Science Department was very pleased with all the work the students put into the day. Thank you to all the Science Department staff for organising this wonderful experience for our students and our community.

Jade Lewis and Friends Inc. – Drug Information Talk On Thursday 20th August 2015, we were lucky enough to have Jade Lewis and Friends Inc. come to our school and present a drug information talk to our lower school students. Approximately 700 students attended this presentation and all students were engaged for the hour long session that they participated in. Jade spoke about her life story; how drugs had made a huge impact on her teenage life and early 20s; and the struggles she went through to overcome her addiction. The message Jade wants to get across to all students is that when you are first invited to try any substance is to have the courage to say, ‘No’.

Since the presentation, students have been openly discussing, asking questions and seeking more information in regards to the negative impact of drugs and alcohol. Jade has released two books Golden Haze - Jade’s life story, and Under Your Influence - a book directed at parents to assist them with parenting their child through a drug and alcohol problem- free life. Jade’s impact on students appears to be positive and we look forward to her possibly returning next year. Tournament of Minds (TOM) Regional Finals This term, four TOM teams will be participating from our school in the Tournament of Minds competition at the Esperance Primary School on Sunday 30th August 2015. The year 11 students are to be congratulated on their continuing good conduct as we enter Semester 2. The fact that there have been so few referrals for poor behaviour is a great indication as to how well they are adapting to the behaviours expected of upper school students.

Students have been following the correct procedures after any absences and this is a reflection on just how well organised the students – and their parents/carers are.

The students in the ATAR pathway are to be commended on the way they have stepped up their efforts following the Semester 1 exams. The transition from lower school to upper school is quite possibly the biggest step students make in their education. The discipline and effort that is required in this pathway is significant. If what I see in the library during half unit private study sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays is any indication, then most students appear to be well on track.

Thank you to those students who have volunteered to design the Leavers jackets for next year. The students will submit their designs to me during week 8. All year 11 students will then have the opportunity to vote for their favourite design. By following this timeline, we should have the jackets available for the students by the start of school next year.

Last week I reminded the year 11 students of the structure that has been put in place for them in the run up to the end of the year. As you can see in the table below, there are different programs in place depending on which pathway a student is in.

The ATAR students have been given an “Expression of Interest” form for the universities camp. These were due in by 9:00am on Wednesday, 26th August. The timeline for organising this camp needs to be followed closely, in particular because everything will need to be in place before students finish school this term.

Please feel free to ring or email if you have any questions.

Bookings can be made at the Front Office after 31st August. Other information and step by step instructions for both TISC and TAFE applications can be found on the school intranet on the “Student Information” page. VET students need to be submitting their workplace learning logbooks regularly and completing all assessments that contribute towards attaining their certificates. If you are concerned that your child will not achieve this, please contact me. Dates to Remember Term Three All VET and mainstream students are required to attend school until the end of term 3. Providing that all course requirements have been completed, VET and mainstream students will finish school on Thursday 24th September (the last day of Term 3). Those students who have not completed course requirements will be required to return in term 4 to complete their unfinished work. Prior arrangements will need to be made between the student and their teachers for this to occur. VET and mainstream students will need to complete a clearance form by Tuesday 23rd September. All books and equipment that belong to the school will need to be returned. Semester 2 Exams Tuesday 6th October – Friday 16th October. Semester 2 exams commence on Tuesday 6th October and conclude on Friday October 16th. The exam venue is the Seventh Day Adventist church hall. WACE exam students are then required to be at school from Monday 19th October to Friday 23rd October inclusive. It is critical that students attend on these days for exam debriefing purposes and final revision. From Monday October 26th students are on study break. During this time, the students can request assistance from their teachers by negotiating a mutually agreed time. The first WACE exam commences on Monday 2nd November at the Seventh Day Adventist hall. Students must bring their examination slip with them to the exams or they will not be able to enter the exam room – these will be given to students on Friday 23th of October. Exit Week and Year 12 Behaviour We encourage students to enjoy and celebrate their final week at school. Students need to remember the high standards of behaviour expected by the school, community and parents. Do not let the excitement of the moment impair good judgement and behaviour. No students are to be on school grounds after hours. This would be a serious breach of the rules. Students who breach school rules could jeopardise their attendance at school functions including the Graduation Ceremony. Year 12 Breakfast The venue for the Year 12 Breakfast on the last day of term (25th September) will be the Pink Lake Golf Club. Supervision of the breakfast will start at 7.00am. The cost (to cover food) is $5. Parents need to note that students will have to make their own transport arrangements. Staff will only be able to supervise the students until 9.00am. Students are not expected to attend school on the day. A permission slip will be given to students soon. This needs to be filled in and returned, with the $5, to the front office. TAFE and University Application ATAR students must complete their TISC applications online by 11:00 pm on 30th September. Students should also complete their applications for accommodation and scholarships as soon as possible. Most TAFE applications should be well on their way. By getting these applications done now, students are freeing up time that they will need to devote to exam preparation. Clearance Forms These forms need to be returned to the school as soon as is practical. It is expected that non-ATAR students will be able to return theirs by Tuesday, 22nd September, and that the ATAR students will have theirs handed in by Friday, 20th November. Please note: Clearance forms need to be returned to the front office before students can attend the graduation evening. Graduation Night This ceremony will take place at the Civic Centre on Wednesday 25th November. It is a formal occasion with a number of awards to be presented, as well as each student’s Graduation Folio. It is expected that students will dress and behave accordingly. All students need to assemble in the reception room by 5.30pm at the very latest. The ceremony will commence at 6pm and should take two hours. Students who are not going to attend should, out of courtesy, notify me as soon as possible. It would be appreciated if parents could support the school with a couple of issues over the last few weeks of term. Students need to make a concerted effort to get to school on time, and to attend form so that they can be kept informed (through daily notices) about what is happening. If a student is late to school, it is essential that they sign in at the front office. Most importantly, students need to stay focused during the last month at school to make certain they complete their work to the standard that they are capable of. This will make sure that mainstream and VET students don’t need to come back in term 4 to complete outstanding work, and will also ensure that ATAR students will get the best preparation for their mock ATAR exams.

The year 12 students have been an excellent group of students and a pleasure to have worked with this year. I know they will complete their year 12 studies in a positive and responsible manner, and not jeopardise anyone’s safety, or their attendance at the Year 12 Graduation. Yours sincerely, Peter Turner Year Twelve Coordinator [email protected]
