MEADOWBROOK MESSENGER a publication of Meadowbrook United Methodist Church Weekly Newsletter www.mbrookumc.org August 20, 2014 Transformed Romans 12:1-8 This week, we continue our sermon series “A Chosen People” by focusing on the next chapter in Romans. Paul has argued enough for the “salvation for all” stance. Now, Paul goes deeper with what salvation looks like in our lives. For Paul, salvation is transformation. It’s change. It’s metamorphosis. It’s a total reworking of who we are and how we live. Like me, you may have a hard time spotting this change in yourself. Or perhaps the change that salvation brought about in you is as obvious as the green of the grass. Either way, you are different. I am different. We are different. The transformation that comes from salvation through Jesus Christ isn’t just about my self being changed. It’s about the whole body of Christ being changed because I am a part of it. The body of Christ is better and unique and different because you are a part of it. You bring wonderfully distinct gifts and talents to this wonderful KIN-dom of God. We are better with you here! I hope you have some time to read through this brief scripture passage this week. Ask God to continue to transform you and to mold you as you are becoming a more faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. -- Pastor Marilyn BACK-2-SCHOOL SUNDAY Join us at Meadowbrook United Methodist Church for Back-2-School Sunday on August 24. TransformedRomans 12:1-8

This week, we continue our sermon series “A Chosen People” by focusing on the next chapter in Romans.

It’s

about the whole body of Christ being changed because Iam a part of it.

The Life of Moses Perhaps no person in history, outside of Jesus Christ, has made such a profound impression on the world as Moses, the great lawgiver of Israel. Even so, God is the primary character in this study. Covering four of the five books of the Pentateuch — Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy — the curriculum includes Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, preparation at Sinai, march toward Canaan and Moses’ final days. Lessons in leadership are a hallmark of this study. Consider the following quote from Exodus (NIV84):

God said to Moses “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites. ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

Saturday, August 23, at 8:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Speaker: Fred Slabach, President of Texas Wesleyan University.

Be there! Bring a friend! Bring a stranger!

Help us plan for enough breakfast by telling the Church office of your plans to attend, but even if you forget to

do that, come anyway!

Dear Friends of Latvia,

If you have not taken the opportunity to view the Friends of Latvia website http://friendsoflatvia.weebly.com/ and seen updates regarding trips and projects in Latvia, I encourage you to do so. Much has happenedin this emerging church since last we gathered together.

Grapevine United Methodist Church has graciously offered to host the National Friends of Latvia meeting in April 2015. More than 10 years have passed since Texas has hosted the national gathering. In preparation for that gathering, the Texas Chapter of FOL is scheduling planning meetings to prepare for the arrival of Friends from all over the United States and are anticipating the greeting of most, if not all, the pastors from Latvia. Arrangements and funding is in the works to bring the pastors over for personal reflection and training as

well as attending a portion of the April conference.

As you have been a part of this ministry for many years in a number of ways, the Texas Friends of Latvia cordially invites you to participate in this planning and the making of next year’s conference a blessed event.

Grapevine UMC, on Church Street in Grapevine, will be hosting our first planning session on Sunday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m. Please let me know if you can attend and if you are aware of any others I should contact in preparation for this planning time. Please share this information with anyone you think might be interested.

Again, please see the website for news regarding recent trips and histories of missioners engaged with this ministry from all over the world.

Blessings,

Jim Nance, ChairTexas Friends of Latvia

Covenant Class News - Room 221August 24: Lesson - The Prophets & Kings #5 Snacks - BelotaAugust 31: Lesson - Mary-margaret Belota Snacks – Nance

Open Door Class News - Room 122Penny was not here to call us to order and so we had an extended fellowship time just talking and drinking coffee. Someone finally decided it was time to allow Mike Estes to bring our lesson for today. We are always so glad to have Mike, who may be one of the few who can, indeed, bring us to attention.

Most people choose a different venue for family vacations each year, but the Estes’ always go back to the same location in Ruidosa, New Mexico. They have been going there every year since 1983. Even though his older daughter has missed maybe one year, the younger one hasn’t missed a one. Every year, they see and do something different or see the same things in a different way. That is a lot like life itself. At different

stages of our lives we can read the same scripture in the Bible, and it will have an entirely different meaning for us. We can walk the same path again and again and either see what’s on each side or keep our eyes on the path itself. Great stories, Mike, with thought-provoking analogies. Come back soon.

We look forward to having Mary-margaret Belota with us next week. Have a wonderful week and we’ll see you Sunday.

Koinonia Class News - Room 202Thank God for a wet Sunday morning after a night of rain. Ron G’s neck brace was gone and he’s back to getting the coffee ready for everyone. The Golightlys also brought cheese pie. Trish McDaniel brought possible study topics from the Cokesbury catalog and suggested an Advent study book, and prez Jane C also presented the study on the 12 disciples “12 Ordinary Men,” which will be our study in September. Updates: The class voted to purchase a $50 advertisement for the UMW CookbookPrayers: For Maria Romero (mother of Kaitlyn & Mara), Lyndsey Duvall and family, and Guadalupe R (for healing) and son Nathan, Trish C and son Stan, and the rest we missed in church today. Part 2 of our study on John the Baptist in the wilderness

is based on Mark 1:1-11. Ron G explained the account of JTB can be found in all four Gospels, but each with a different emphasis. This particular version starts with the prophecy of Isaiah about a messenger who will prepare the way for Jesus’ coming. JTB was portrayed here as coming out from the wilderness and baptizing people, after confession, for the forgiveness of sin. There was discussion about what people did in the Old Testament, such as animal sacrifice, to ask for forgiveness. Jesus arrived to be baptized by John before He went to the mountain. JTB was arrested and imprisoned. We have two more Sundays about JTB and then we study the 12 Disciples. Come early to donate blood. Snacks will be available. Have a blessed week. -- Lura Colorado

adult class newsUpper Room -- ParlorA few of the ladies and 100% (5) of the men showed up for music by Marjorie and Helen, refreshment by Dortha D. and a great lesson by Jim Nance. Jim’s lesson was from the book of Amos and was about Amos. God chose Amos, a farmer who tended his sheep and raised figs, to go to Israel and teach them of their sins and debauchery. They were into everything: lying, cheating, stealing, drinking, complacency, idolatry and oppression of the poor. It sounded exactly like today’s world. Jim will be back next week but would not promise a happy pleasant lesson. More debauchery I guess. Then to business -- Ray Wood, our Chairman of Trustees, advised that we could stay in the Parlor. While we had agreed to move, we were very elated to stay in

the parlor. We voted to buy a page in the forthcoming cookbook. Mary Henry is improving and Betty Z is okay. We are thankful for this report. Next Sunday refreshments will be by Marjorie and Clare and another lesson by Jim.

It will be enlightening, so BE THERE.

Wesleyan - Room 112Glorious rain - cool temperature and a people blessed by God - Another way of saying “Wesleyans.”

Mary and Martha led our singing of praises, and Jeanne Mabey opened our hearts with a wonderful devotional.

Mary Strom brought us up to date on the new MUMC cookbook. She urged everyone to participate. It’s about making history, not just pies, folks!

Pres. McCombs brought word from Chairperson Daisy on the upcoming trip to the George Bush Library in Dallas. Make your plans and sign up next week.

Great news! Llano Carlisle is home to recover. She

plans to drive herself to S.S. as soon as she can! Thanks for the beautiful note to the class, Llano.

Mary Hightower stretched our brains as she brought an informative lesson on her extensive travels to the Holy Land. She gave good handouts and covered our relationship to those in the Messianic Christian Church, its symbols, and its theologies. Thanks, Mary. Hopefully we will continue studying this on our own.

Bless someone with a call, card, or visit this week. You’ll feel better, too.

Meadowbrook Life Groups As we continue to grow in faith and the love of Christ, we know that the circumstances of life can sometimes bring us down. The great thing about the Christian way is knowing that you don’t have to journey through life alone. We are looking for persons, couples, and families who are interested in hosting a Life Group as this initiative gets off the ground.

For more information, or if you are interested in being a host for a Life Group, please contact Pastor Charles Robinson at 817-343-6544.
