Monday 11 th January 2021 Good morning P7, I hope you all managed to enjoy your Christmas and New Year with you family. I am feeling sad that I can’t welcome you all back into the classroom, but I am looking forward to us starting our online home learning journey together. Weekly Learning / Glow Every week I will upload your weekly learning grid and learning resources onto Microsoft Teams. These will be posted in the ‘Assignment’ tab in the ‘General’ channel. We will be focussing on Literacy, Numeracy and Health and Well-being in the first week. I have set up different channels on out Microsoft team, this is for you to be able to discuss the different learning activities and ask any questions. For example, I would like you to use the Numeracychannel to ask about any maths or numeracy learning you have that week. This will help me to manage the discussions, hopefully! Please remember that Teams discussions are for learning conversations. You must ensure what you are putting on there is appropriate and what I would expect to hear within the classroom. Above all be kind and considerate to others and help each other if you can. Topic After this I will also introduce our topic for this term which is Space. We will be exploring the planets within the solar system, space travel and current developments in space research. Hopefully, this is something we will all enjoy finding out about. Sumdog We will be using Sumdog to help us practice and progress our numeracy skills. This is additional to other learning activities I will provide. For those of you who are not familiar with Sumdog, it is a fun and interactive online learning platform where you are given numeracy questions to play the games. You can earn coins to purchase things for you own house and progress in your learning to get a pet.

    Good morning P7,

I hope you all managed to enjoy your Christmas and New Year with you family. I am

feeling sad that I can’t welcome you all back into the classroom, but I am looking

forward to us starting our online home learning journey together.

    Weekly Learning / Glow

Every week I will upload your weekly learning grid and learning resources onto

Microsoft Teams. These will be posted in the ‘Assignment’ tab in the ‘General’

channel. We will be focussing on Literacy, Numeracy and Health and Well-being in

    the first week.

I have set up different channels on out Microsoft team, this is for you to be able to

discuss the different learning activities and ask any questions. For example, I would

like you to use the ‘Numeracy’ channel to ask about any maths or numeracy learning

you have that week. This will help me to manage the discussions, hopefully!

Please remember that Teams discussions are for learning conversations. You must

ensure what you are putting on there is appropriate and what I would expect to hear

within the classroom. Above all be kind and considerate to others and help each

    other if you can.

    Topic

After this I will also introduce our topic for this term which is Space. We will be

exploring the planets within the solar system, space travel and current developments

in space research. Hopefully, this is something we will all enjoy finding out about.

    Sumdog

We will be using Sumdog to help us practice and progress our numeracy skills. This

is additional to other learning activities I will provide. For those of you who are not

familiar with Sumdog, it is a fun and interactive online learning platform where you

are given numeracy questions to play the games. You can earn coins to purchase

things for you own house and progress in your learning to get a pet.

  • To start with you will have to complete the initial assessment so that Sumdog can

work out what areas you are confident in and which you are still developing. This can

take a bit of time to complete so please do spend a little bit of time in week one and

two on Sumdog. It can be done over more than one session because it automatically

    restarts from where you finished.

You all have you own Sumdog account and I have emailed you username and

password to your Glow email account. You can access these through the Microsoft

Outlook app on your glow launch pad.

    Help with Home Learning

If you need any help with your home learning please do not hesitate to get in touch.

I understand how challenging it can be to complete work if you are struggling or don’t

fully understand something. I want you to remember that it is my job to help you with

your learning and just like you would ask me in class I want you to be able to ask me

when you are at home too. You can do this through the different channels on

Microsoft Teams or by emailing me through glow [email protected].

There may be times when you won’t get an immediate response from me, however, I

will endeavour to get back to you as soon as I can. Every Monday I will be in school

covering the childcare hub for the P4-7s, which means that I won’t be able to check

glow as frequently on this day so please be patient with me.

I hope you are all ready for home learning in January and I look forward to

welcoming you back into the classroom when we are told it is safe to do.

    Regards

    Miss Heath

book review for it. You will find the example in the Literacy channel on Microsoft Teams.

Numeracy and Maths Mental maths – find your Weekly mental maths in the Numeracy channel file – this is not

your normal mental maths but do the sheet in the book colour that you normally do in class.

  • Week 1 11/01/21

If you have completed all your learning activities for this week, try out some of these…

    Art

All those budding artists out there take

time to enjoy creating pieces of art.

If you want to practice your art skills then

check out these websites for step by step

    ‘How to’ guides.

    ICT

    Practice your coding skills by

going onto Scratch and creating a

    story, game or animation.

    Practice your touch-typing skills.

    Cooking/Baking

Being able to cook and prepare meals is

an important life skill. Try to practice this

by helping prepare meals, cook for your

family or do some baking. Remember to

take a picture of dishes to share with me!

    The Great Outdoors

Getting out and about for fresh air and

exercise is very important for our mental

and physical well-being. Take time to go

out and enjoy the great outdoors.

    Positive Memory Jar 2021

Find yourself a empty and clean jar.

Decorate and label it with “Positive

    memories of 2021”.

At the end of each week write something

positive that has happened that week.

Fold it up and put it into the jar.

At the end of 2021 you can read all the

    positive things that have happened

    throughout the year.

    Family Time

I hope you all enjoyed your family time

over the holiday and had a go at playing

your maths board game with them.

Create another board game for your

family. It could have a different theme this

time, maybe a general knowledge game.

Make sure you have the aim of the game,

rules and how to win the game.

    Kindness and Positivity

In term 2 we were focussing on kindness and positivity and I would like us to continue this in

term 3 too. I have set up a ‘Kindness and Positivity’ channel on our team ready for you to

share any random act of kindness or stories of positivity. Remember it is so important to be

kind to others and recognise the positive impact you can have on others. Lockdown can be a

challenging time for some so try your hardest to be kind, helpful and considerate of others.

  • My Goals for 2021

It is traditional that as we bring in the new year we set ourselves goals to achieve in that year. I would

like you to think about what you would like to achieve in 2021 and set yourself some goals. This will

help you to focus on what you want to achieve and make a plan of how to achieve it. When you look

back on these you will be reminded of how hard you have worked to accomplish your goals.

    When setting a goal you have to make sure it is SMART;

    S - Specific

    M - Measurable

    A - Attainable

    R - Relevant

    T - Time bound

You will be setting a goal for each of the three different areas:

    Learning - Think of something you want to improve on in you learning. For example this could be;

staying focussed, trying hard, practicing skills like times tables and writing.

Personal - Think of something you want to work on in your own time. It could be related to a hobby,

family and friendships or it could be life skills like helping out around the house and cooking.

Something new - Think about something new you would like to try in 2021.

Use the next sheet to help guide you in planning your goals for 2021 fill it out by downloading it and

then typing into each section or hand write directly onto the sheet or into your book.

We don’t know about you, but after the year we’ve all had if ever an Easter egg was needed in January it would be now!

EuroMillions: Jackpot of more than £39m won by UK ticket holder

A UK ticket holder has started the new year by winning the EuroMillions jackpot of nearly £40 million.

It's only been a matter of days since Christmas but it seems it's already time to start looking ahead to the future as supermarkets begin to stock their shelves with Easter eggs!

This is despite the fact that Easter Sunday is not until the 4th of April! From the date of this newspaper, how many days is it until Easter Sunday?

Tailgating is when one driver follows another driver within a distance that makes it impossible to stop if the vehicle ahead stops suddenly.

    So how far back should you be? If you can judge distances, a good rule of thumb is to leave a stopping distance of 5 metres per 6 m.p.h. How much of a stopping distance should you leave if you are travelling at;

You can roughly count this by saying ‘one thousand and one, two thousand and two’, or ‘only a fool breaks the two-second rule’ at a normal speaking speed.

    **ACTIVE LEARNING TASK**

    (c) Get someone to use a stopwatch to time you saying the phrase above. How close to

two seconds does it take you???

Another way to ensure you leave an appropriate stopping distance is the “two second” rule. This means that the front of your vehicle should be two seconds behind the back of the vehicle in front.
