Serenity, Solitude and Serendipity:

Hi, I’m Shanal Qazi and I’m going to use this space to share my favourite spots

in Indonesia. While I was there, I got the

chance to explore and experience the diverse culture of the city, so

here’s my scoop!

TRAVEL & CAKE

On our first proper day in Bali, we decided to go to Seminyak, an area which is most popular for its golden sunsets and beach lounges. After shopping for neon Buddhas, silver jewelry, swimsuits and fake Ray Bans at the Semi-nyak Square, we made our way to the beach. We spent sunset in Bali’s most

famous beach lounges: Ku De Ta and Potato Head. Where, when the sun sets, silhou-ettes of palm trees and tourists line the beach front – an unforgettable view and an enthralling moment as everyone goes quiet, embracing the last few minutes of sun-light. Jazzy lounge music played in the background, slowly turning faster as the day melted into the night. For dinner we consumed great Indonesian – European fusion food. We ended the day at Kuta beach / Legian; Bali’s most lively neighborhood, with many tattoo parlors, bars and clubs. We spent the next few hours at a bar called Se-cret Garden where live music from the ‘60s to the ‘90s plays and many tourists get up to sing. However we headed home as nightlife in this district goes into the wee morn-ing hours. On day two, we spent the afternoon at Dreamland Beach– a beach lover’s paradise. Its gleaming white sand and crystal blue waters evoked a feeling of calmness; though its

waves were rough as it was a surfer’s beach. It is one of Bali’s most pristine beaches as it is tucked away from the usual tourist hustle bustle. A few bars and cafes have cropped up over the years but apart from that there is little intrusion, so one can lie peacefully on the sunbeds and tan, get a massage from the local masseurs or enjoy some fresh cold coconut water or rent surf boards and floater planks to try out the water. Swimming in these huge waves was a risky but exhilarating experience and should be done at least once in a lifetime! As the afternoon dulled, we headed to Uluwatu Temple for sunset. The temple is one of the six key temples in Bali, it is located on top of a steep cliff, approximately 70 meters above sea level. This aspect naturally makes all views, especially sunset a sensory treat for visitors. The temple is believed to date back to the 10th Century; Balinese Hindus believe that the three divine powers of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva become one here. Stone carved sculp-tures of Gods all across the temple are magnificent; it is believed that they protect the Island from evil sea spirits. We took a quick tour of the temple and then headed to where the traditional Kecak dance happened every day at sunset. The dance was performed by a circle of performers, chanting, while moving their arms, depicting a battle from the Ramayana. The ritual was mesmerizing and as it ended we headed to Jimbaran beach, famous for its small beach front restaurants which served delicious fresh grilled seafood. We ended our night with a meal of grilled jumbo prawns, lobster, squid and fish at a restaurant called Made Bagus, supposedly the best from the lot.

Finally on day three, we headed to Nusa Dua, the resort area of Bali where one could enjoy a clean private beach, go jet – skiing or snorkeling. We en-joyed Indonesian delicacies at the swim up bar at the Nusa Dua Grand Resort such as Nasi Goreng, MiGoreng, and Satay, and that is the end of my tour in Bali. Indonesia is a country where one can find anything one would like to do, every moment, every place and every person you meet is full of love, kind-ness and peace. As I head back to reality, I will remember this holiday for all times to come… Thank you Indonesia for the serenity, solitude and serendip-ity – till next time!

Order the Coastal Lobster Roll with fresh dill dressing and a side of Chesapeake Bay Chips and, of course, something to sip on, like the Green Flash, while you lounge around feeling oh so posh looking out at a truly awe-inspiring view of So Cal.

BAnk of venIce And the venIce BeAch BoArdWALk: When you need a time out, there’s no better place to bum than Venice Beach. A fun, eclectic oceanside scene where streets are lined with kitchsy stores and stalls selling everything from t-shirts to tattoos to tequila shots. concealer & Foundation For the Smokey eye look, I use tarte crease less concealer in fair tan. You are only required to use it to conceal the under-eye dark circles and any other imperfections. Once I am done with the concealing, I use make-up forever HD foundation. A very small amount of it is applied on my foundation brush and then I evenly spread it throughout my face making sure it is perfectly blended. After that, tap a little face powder very softly to your whole face. You do not want to rub it because that would displace the foundation so be very gentle with face powder application.

contour and highlightThis look is going to be a glamorous one so you must enhance your cheekbones with a bronze blush. Add a tinge of pink with Nars orgasm blush on the apple of the cheeks and give it a finishing look with a highlighter. I personally use high beam by benefit cosmetics for this purpose.

eyesNow here is the challenging part which needs most of your attention for this look. Firstly, highlight the area under your eyebrow with a light nude eyeshadow. I’ve used Sephora’s smokey eye palette for this look. Using an

applicator or brush, define the crease with a dark brown eyeshadow from the palette. Next up, leave the inner corner empty and fill the eyelid with a grey eyeshadow. Then sweep the darkest shadow (black) in a v into the outer corner of the eye to give the ultimate smokey eye look. Blend it with the brown shadow used on the crease and buff out the harsh lines working towards the outer corner of your eye. Using the darkest shadow, fill in half of your lower eyelid and neatly join it with the upper outer corner line. Fill in the inner corner with a shimmery silver eyeshadow to get a perfect glam effect for the night out. Last but certainly not the least, finish the eyes by curling your lashes with an eyelash curler and then applying false eyelashes, this however is optional. If you feel that your mascara is dense enough to help you thicken your lashes then you may not go for false lashes. Otherwise, I’ve used Samantha by huda beauty. Coat it with a layer of black mascara to blend the false and real lashes together.

With Ramadan finally coming to an end, we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief. There’s a misconception about dieting and Ramadan—the common one being that it’s the perfect time to lose those extra lbs you’ve been carrying around all year round.While intermittent fasting is having a moment right now with health experts touting it as an effective weight loss method, Ramadan fasting is a different story. Ramadan is not the time to start a low-calorie diet or go full-on Rocky in the gym because you don’t want to be going ham on the food come Iftar time, like you are at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Low sugar levels combined with dehydration from lack of water is not what you want to enter the gym with and deplete your sugar and hydration levels further. Of course light exercise and healthier food choices at meal times are encouraged all year round and especially laudable in Ramadan. But if you have been overindulging and slacking on light exercise because it’s the month where pakoras are taking centre stage in your life, then don’t worry about it because we have the exercise moves that will get you back on the health horse to have your body winter-wedding-season ready (we call it the WWS Body).Remember to warm up enough that you have a sweat going before you attempt any of these exercises and to cool down by stretching afterwards—you can either incorporate these moves into your current routine or do them on their own (after warm up) for a quick and sweaty workout. The repetition and intensity of each exercise move is dependant on the person working out and we recommend performing upper body exercises on a different day to lower body exercises.

SQUATS TO WORK YOUR BUTT OFFWe never really believed how good squats can make your tush and your legs look till we tried it for ourselves. We’re not saying that ten squats in one workout will tone your derrière but keep at it long enough and what you’ll start to see is a stronger, curvier, toned butt. Squats work virtually every muscle in your body as long as you are keeping proper form when doing them. You can begin with basic squats where you start in a standing position, feet shoulder-width apart and tighten your core, push your hips back and bend your knees, lowering your body into a squat. We don’t need to tell you how to squat—it’s the easiest (yet hardest) move to do. If you’re feeling strong and like a badass in the gym (remember the mind is stronger than the body) then add a burpee into your squat. Start in a squat position, lean forward while maintaining the squat position, place hands on the floor, jump back into a plank position. Jump back into squat position and jump off the floor as high as you can go and land back in a squat. We’re not saying a combo of squats and burpees is easy by any means but boy, is it a calorie-torcher. We’re also fans of the sumo squat (normal squat but feet are wider than shoulder-width apart and toes are turned out) and jump squats (where you squat and jump off the ground).

BUFF UPPER BODYSince it is summer and the season where arms are on display, you want sleek, toned arms and shoulders so obviously we have rounded up the most effective moves to banish the bingo wings and bra-bulge (for you ladies) *shudders*. To get rid of the flabby and dreaded bingo/chicken wings you want to work your tricep muscles. You will want to grab a pair of 3-6kg dumbbells (if you’re starting out) and get going. Stand with feet wide and holding dumbbells with both hands and bring your arms overhead and then bend elbows and lower weights behind the head all the way down to shoulders (be careful not to drop the dumbbells). Extend your arms back up and then bring them towards hips and raise arms back overhead to return to the starting position. We recommend 15-20 repetitions.For a leaner back you want to do the rear fly exercise which involves you standing with your feet together, slightly bent over and holding dumbbells (again, go with a weight that is not too light but not too heavy that you can’t hold it). Keep your spine straight, extend your arms 45 degrees to the sides and raise arms to shoulder sides all the while squeezing shoulder blades. Alternate this exercise with one where you press your arms back by hips, palms facing up and push your arms back and then lower your arms. Continue doing this for 10-15 repetitions and repeat on opposite side.

le SURFBOARD ABSWhile we firmly believe that abs are made in the kitchen, we also believe that working every part of your body is important so here is a core killing workout that will leave you sore for all the right reasons. We love planks but they do get boring after the first 15 seconds so we like to turn them into spiderman/woman planks so it feels like we’re actually doing something. Start in your normal forearm plank position and bring your left knee to your left elbow and return to original plank position and repeat with the right side. For best results do them as fast as you possibly can because you really want to get your heart rate racing and feel your core muscles working. These may sound easy but we assure you, you’ll probably be cursing us for introducing them to you because they provide a killer burn and nothing worth having (especially a six-pack) comes easy.We finally come to an exercise move that involves you lying down on your yoga-mat and getting a chance to catch your breath. Lay on your back with legs up in the air, knees and hips bent at 90 degrees. Remain flat on the ground and move legs to your left side, bring back to the middle and move legs to the right side. If you can manage to straighten your knees throughout this exercise then we applaud you.We’re fans of mountain climbers too which we find to be one of the more fun exercise moves. Start in a forearm plank position and keep the core engaged with palms pressed into the floor and move your feet back and forth—like your legs are running but your upper body remains in a plank position.On days we really want to punish ourselves, we add Russian twists and V-ups in our routine too, and moan every time we move for the rest of the day. Hey, it’s exercise, if you’re not sore and moaning then you’re not doing it right.

LEAN LEGSIf you thought you wouldn’t find any kettle bells over here, you were wrong. To tone your lower half so you look good in your skinny jeans instead of snug then grab that kettle bell and get swingin’. For the single-arm kettle bell swing you want to obviously grab a kettle bell with an overhand grip and hold it in front of your waist at arm’s length—to make it slightly easier, hold kettle bell with both hands. Bend your lower body at a 45 degree angle and swing the kettle bell between your legs. Now be very careful, there have been instances where we swung the kettle bell a little too enthusiastically and it went flying into the mirror in front of us. So, you want to avoid that at all costs and keep the danger to a minimum in the gym. While swinging you want to keep your arm straight, thrust forward your hips and straighten your knees, bringing the kettle bell up as you rise to a standing position. Squat and swing the kettle bell in between your legs again and repeat for 15 repetitions.And we finally make our way to everyone’s hated exercise—lunges. We absolutely hate doing lunges but do it because we want to turn our fat sausages for legs into something leaner. We find lunges are most effective when we do them holding weight—dumbbells, medicine ball, weight plates. You want to make sure you’re doing the same number of reps for each leg (don’t want one leg leaner than the other, that would be odd). To add a little excitement to your lunges you can always do curtsy lunges Everything is the same as a normal lunge but instead of lunging forwards or backwards you cross to the side and lower into a lunge, as if you are about to curtsy to a royal, it is that simple.

Kate Leiper is an artist and children’s illustrator based in Edinburgh. Her work has a style of its

own, instantly recognisable, highly desirable and having a loyal and enthusiastic following. Her work is figurative and for the most part based upon narrative. She is partic-ularly inspired by Scottish legends, folklore and fairytales. Kate works on paper using mainly pastel, ink, acrylic paint, gold leaf and collaged materials. part of the world and being a visual person, I gorged myself on all the fantastical new sights, colours and textures. I was met with such friend-liness and kind hospitality by the people there and the food I ate was just delicious. I hope that I can go back one day.Kate Leiper: Tell us a bit about yourself. How did your journey in art begin?I can’t remember a time when I didn’t draw. As a child I used to pester my dad to bring me scrap paper from his office which I would then go through at an alarming rate. Family pets were often engaged as models willingly or otherwise. My parents always en-couraged me to draw and nurtured my interest in art by regularly taking me to see exhibitions and galleries. It was only when I went to secondary school that I ex-perienced some resistance to the idea of pursuing art as a career, the suggestion being made that it would be impossible to get a “proper job”. However I was lucky enough to have some very enthusiastic art teachers who inspired me to continue with my art studies and apply for a place at art school.FH: What is your preferred medium of painting/illustration?KL: I work mainly with chalk pastel on paper. The paper is often prepared beforehand with ink or water-colour and any gold detailing is done in acrylic paint or ink.FH: How do you choose the subject of your paint-ing?KL: Through my artwork I aim to create a visual narra-tive and am particularly drawn to stories which por-tray some aspect of life experience common to us all. I use animals as my main subject matter as they provide an immediate connection to a preconceived set of char-acteristics (similar to the animals in Aesop’s Fables). Throughout time and all over the world people have projected human qualities onto animals. Of course, these characteristics may vary from culture to culture,

but the concept of anthropomorphism is a universal one. Through the pose of my main animal subject and use of symbolic objects and imagery related to the story, I aim to catch the viewer’s attention and draw them in to study the image more closely. It doesn’t mat-ter to me if the viewer sees a story which is different to the one I’m trying to tell. I’m much more fascinated by how people relate to the imagery and seek out their own tale.FH: Whatever you draw, how much it comes from imagination and how much from research?KL: Ooooh, this is impossible to quantify. Research can allow you to dig deeper into your imagination and yet through the imagination you are directed to new lines of research.FH: When you illustrate a children’s book, how much freedom do you get from a publisher?KL: This depends on the brief from the publisher. Some publishers give you a lot of freedom while others have a more set idea of what they are looking for.FH: Where do you take inspiration for storytelling pictures?KL: I find inspiring stories in all sorts of places. There are oral stories, printed stories, stories in ballads, poems and song lyrics, stories I’ve overheard and those I’ve collected word-of-mouth but the best are stories that are gifted to me, told because the teller believes that it will touch my soul in some way. FH: How do you feel when you look at the finished book?KL: A bit weird! It’s pleasing to see the final outcome

after months of work but it’s also strange to see the illustrations in book form. The printed versions of my artwork have a different quality to them (slightly dif-ferent colours, texture and scale), plus they are in the 3-dimensional form of a book. It just takes me a little time to get used to and reacquaint myself with the work in its new appearance.FH: Tell us something about your needle work and patch work.KL: I don’t like having idle hands so I find that needle-work, patchwork and knitting are great activities to relax my mind yet still give my hands something to do. It’s also a good excuse to make presents for my friends and family.

FH: Do you have a daily routine that gets you ready for being creative?KL: A mug of strong coffee first thing in the morn-ing!FH: When you have a creative block is there anything you do to remedy it?KL: I usually only get creative blocks when I’m tired and I think that the

worst thing you can do in this situation is to sit in front of a blank piece of paper, so I take myself away from my desk by going for a walk, having a coffee with a friend or dancing. FH: Do you work under pressure or you believe that pressure kills creativity?KL: For me, pressure, ie. a bracing deadline, is a dou-ble edged sword. It can provide the motivation and the means of creating a timetable in order to complete a project, however the danger comes when there is too much and it causes me to freeze. This is a horrible feeling which I can only describe as a tsunami about to crash down on my head and wash me away.FH: How has your style changed over the years?KL: I’m sure that it probably has, although it’s always hard to plot the changes in your own work. I probably spend a lot more time at the planning stages which may mean that I consider composition more intently. I think that my work has also possibly become more in-tricate and detailed as I’ve become more experienced in handling the drawing materials.FH: Since your trip, is there anything regarding Pakistan that you’d like to find out more about?KL: Yes I want to know more about the book illustra-tion scene in Pakistan and about traditional miniature painting.FH: What is your dream project?KL: An illustration project with no bracing dead-lines!.....ahhh, but would I finish it?... FH: Do you have any favourite thing to draw?KL: Seals. I love the way that they are so cumbersome and ungainly on land and yet transform into the most graceful of dancers underwater.FH: Any advice for younger artists?KL: Keep observing and keep drawing.

Khizra Waqar: Tell us a bit about your educational background and career path.Syed Raza Rehman: I did my MBA from Islamabad, and then I joined PIFD, which I left in the 2nd year. After that I joined an Ameri-can company called Warnaco. I worked at Warnaco for 4 to 5 years as a senior mer-chandiser. The retail industry wasn’t much developed back in 2001, this is when I got an opportunity from Minnie Minors where I started working as a Brand Manager.My career at Sefam started in 2002. By 2005 I took over Chinyere. By 2007/8 I had become the General Manager of Chinyere. Then in 2011 I started Urban Culture, then Super squad and Rangja by 2012. And finally by 2014 I became the Chief Operating Officer (Coo). KW: Rangja seemed to have lost its charm recently after its great hype back when it was first introduced, tell us more about that.

SRR: You’re right, Rangja did lose its charm for a while for many reasons including the change of team. However we are currently working on Re-vamping it up and bringing more energy into our work. If you visit our stores by winter you will see a difference in our work, you’ll see a lot more of our old work, the kind that we started with, which people loved. KW: What has been the Central focus of Rang Ja?SRR: With Chinyere our focus and specialty has always been on luxury prêt wear. However recently we have introduced some semi formal Kurti’s with a lower price range. KW: What is something you’ll never compro-mise on?SRR: We never compromise on the quality of our products. We may lower our margins but never on the quality of fabrics. We live by the moto of “the customer is always right”. If they think something is rubbish, then it is rubbish. No matter what, the quality of our work must re-

KW: What was the concept behind Super Squad?SRR: We used to get a lot of customers from Minnie minors who would complain about not having enough retail option for their kids above 5 years of age, that’s when we decided to introduce Super Squad specifically for the pre teens. KW: What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your journey so far?SRR: I faced the real challenge in 2008 when the retail industry in Pakistan started boom-ing. There was a lot of competition, especially because retailers started bringing work from China and to compete with the pricing of that was very difficult. The market in Pakistan has changed vastly. People used to care for quality back in the day as repeating clothes was no sin. But nowadays, there is a huge disposable trend of wearing something once or maybe twice and then trashing it away. The problem with this is that people don’t mind compro-mising on the quality anymore as long as they don’t need to compromise on the price. KW: What are some of your biggest accom-plishments?SRR: My biggest achievement is Minnie

minors. At first my number of stores target was 50, but now we have 102 stores all over Pakistan and to me, this has been my biggest accomplishment.KW: Where do you get your inspiration from?SRR: I’m always traveling as it’s something I love to do and by traveling I get a lot of exposure from around the world. That is why when I’m in different countries I look at their fashion, trends and lifestyles and then I get inspired from of all that. KW: Let’s get to know you better, tell us some-thing about yourself or your personality. SRR: Well, I’m a very adventurous person. I actually love photography, travelling, and music. I also happen to be a shopaholic and I enjoy sketching in my free time. I would travel the world alone if I had to, that’s how much I love exploring and having adventures. At some point, I even knew how to play the keyboard, however I no longer have the time to do that anymore. Lastly, like most Pakistani men, I am a huge cricket fan. KW: What is your ultimate dream?SRR: Career wise, I want to take Minnie minors on an international level. Personal wise, I want to travel the world. I have visited many coun-tries but there is still so much more to discover.

This time, not only was Syeda Amera selected to represent the whole of South Asia in J Summer Fashion Show 2016 in Paris but she also won an award for the most talented young international designer. The award was represented by none other than Jessica Minh Anh, the director of the show. The ceremony took place on top of the luxurious Bateaux Mouches Cruise giving a perfect view of the Eiffel Tower at the background.Following was Syeda Amera’s SS ‘16 showcase, having guests seated facing the multi-faceted glass windows of Le Jean Bruel while the boat was cruising. As a result, architectural wonders such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Louvre, and the 37 bridges will become the natural backdrop for the unconventional catwalk. Pakistani talent Syeda Amera has previously joined Jessica Minh Anh on her unique catwalks on the Hudson River in New York, Gemasolar in Spain, and Costa Luminosa’s sundeck in Sydney earlier this year. Talking to the media after the show Jessica Minh Anh said “Syeda Amera has mastered the art of mixing lace, sequins, and embellishments to redefine modern glamour. I am drawn to her artistic usage of innovative textures, daring cuts, and architectural detailing.” With her new stunning collection inspired by the beauty of Paris, Syeda Amera has impress the fashion capital while setting a shining example for the new generation of designers in Pakistan.
