Miriam Helped Her FamilyBased on Exodus 1:8-10,22; 2:1-10

A new king, or Pharaoh, was named in Egypt. Pharaoh did not like the Hebrew people. The king said all boys born to the Hebrews must be thrown into the Nile River. A Hebrew woman gave birth to a baby boy. The woman kept the boy hidden for three months. The boy's mother covered the outside of a papyrus basket with tar to make it waterproof. The mother wanted to keep her baby safe. She placed the baby in the basket and set the basket in the reeds or tall grass of the Nile River. The baby's sister, Miriam, stood nearby to watch over her baby brother [peek over the grass at the basket].

Pharaoh's daughter went to bathe at the Nile. She saw the basket and sent her servant girl to get it. [Invite a girl to get the basket and place it on the floor in front of you.] Pharaoh's daughter opened the basket [look inside the basket]. Inside the basket was a crying baby boy. She felt sorry for the baby. [Lead children to make crying noise.]

Miriam went to Pharaoh's daughter and asked if she could get a woman to take care of the baby.

Pharaoh's daughter told Miriam to get someone to care for the baby. Miriam got her mother. Pharaoh's daughter told the baby's mother she would pay her to care for the baby. The baby's mother took the boy home and cared for him.

When the baby grew older, his mother took him to Pharaoh's daughter. The baby became Pharaoh's daughter's son. Pharaoh's daughter named the baby Moses because the baby was taken out of the water.
