Week of: May 18 th – May 22 nd News to Know OLYMPIC DAY: The last day of school will be our school-wide Olympic Day. We are in need of parents who are willing to volunteer their time for this event. If you are interested, please email Mr. Williams ([email protected] ). More information will be sent out soon to parents about this event. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL LUNCH: We will have a school-wide outdoor lunch on the last day of school, that means no hot lunch, milk or salad options. If you would like your child to get a lunch from school on that day it will be the sandwich option in a brown paper bag. Orders must be made in advance for this day so please let me know by JUNE 1 st if your child will be getting a sacked lunch on the last day of school. END OF THE YEAR PARTY: Thank you to those who have signed up to help with our class party on Thursday, June 4 th . There are still open slots for this party on the Shutterfly website. BOOK SWAP: Permission slips for the Book Swap went home early this week. Please fill out this form and start searching for books around your house. Permission slips and books are due by Wednesday, May 27 th . Please remember to send your child with a blanket or towel on June 2 nd for the book swap. We are also likely to keep those same blankets and/or towels until the last day for our outdoor lunch. Rowdy Readers This week we continued a unit in which the student and I have been reflecting about the school year and recognizing everything that we have learned. We worked on editing written work, recognizing the main idea of a text, long vowel sounds and counting the sounds in loooooong words (e.g. principal, hippopotamus, intelligent, discovery). Some of the books that helps us out this week were: •Mouse Deer Crosses the River •Ma Lien and the Magic Brush •The Amazing Octopus •All About Bridges •The Pigeon Needs a Bath •Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late We did not add new sight words this week, instead we reviewed the 37 that we already know. We did add 5 new oral vocabulary words this week. The new words are: final, splendid, consider, curious and explore. Remember, these words are meant to help improve oral language, ask your child about our new motions for these words to help us remember the meaning. Math Madness This week we finished up our work on place value. We worked on short cuts in counting large numbers, recognizing groups of ten then counting on and matching picture with numbers with words. Your child will be bringing home a flip book about place value and numbers in the teens, this can be used as a great review tool. Next week we will work on subtraction.
