T.O. CITY PLANNING

Haider Alawami

Haider Alawami, Economic Development Manager for the City of Thou-

sand Oaks, and 32 -year employee of the City of Thousand Oaks, spoke

of the city being one of the top safest cities with a population over

100,000 in the country, ranking as one of the top 100 US cities in which

to live. 96% of the residents rank Thousand Oaks as excellent or good.

The City has a balanced budget, as it has during all the years Haider has

worked for the City. They only spend what they have, he said, indi-

cating where sales taxes come from. He noted that the City is fortunate

to partner with the Auto Mall, as it provides 1/3 of the City’s sales tax,

and added that 1790 new cars were sold just in November.

The environment and jobs are doing well, but the City needs more hous-

ing. The median age in Thousand Oaks is 43.5. They are working on

plans to attract and retain younger residents. In the next 8 years, 2500

new homes (either apartment, mixed use, attached, or single-family

dwellings) will need to be built as part of the state plan. A portion of

the housing must be affordable, all of which invites residents and work-

ers here to be engaged in the discussion about housing.

Haider spoke of components that bring much to our community, includ-

ing biotech companies, CAP Campus Master Plan, enhancements to

downtown Thousand Oaks, Rancho Conejo industrial areas, finding a

permanent location as a home for the Rams, and more.

Haider showed renderings of plans for the “Main Street Concept” of the

Civic Arts Plaza. Lots of exciting projects in the works, and a wonderful

place to live! Haider’s talk was applauded as a great job! His power-

point presentation is available to those who wish it.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Pat McCoy was holding a brief meeting for the Economic Forecast

Committee after the meeting.

Maria Prescott reminded everyone about the Club Social at Mike and

Jodi Jansen’s that night.

Chris Steele reminded those who were volunteering for the 5 Star Theatricals’ perfor-

mance at Port Hueneme when to meet on Friday night. Chris also asked everyone who

hadn’t already done so, to sign-up for themselves and any guests who will attend the Holi-

day Show on Dec. 19th.

President Gooch announced the District Foundation Gala to be

held on January 11th at Sherwood and encouraged members to attend. On the

same day, there will be a celebration in Tijuana for Los Tres Reyes. See Matt Lallo

for more details. President Herb then reminded all about Past President Karen

Furnari’s husband Steve’s Funeral at St. Jude Catholic Church on Saturday the 12th.

Karen is in everyone’s thoughts and prayers.

President Herb Gooch opened the meeting and introduced Past

District Governor, Felix Masci to present the Inspirational Mo-

ment. Felix asked us each to recall a special memory while gath-

ered with friends and family and how it impacted our lives. He

encouraged us to help others create those special moments

and memories when thinking about service above self, and in our everyday

lives. After the pledge to the flag, Joani Pappas,

led us in America the Beautiful

President Gooch thanked our wait staff on be-

half of the club for their service throughout the

year, presenting each with a card and gratuity.

Nelson Buss then introduced visiting Rotarians Susana and Jim Brown,

from Boston and Needham Clubs respectively, Darin Arrasmith’s guest

Kelly Dooley, Matt Lallo’s wife Teresa, Mike Jansen’s guest Shane Ahern,

and Judy Lazar, who is returning to the club.

Happy $$$$

Martin Anderson carried the cup.

After a 10-minute announcement session, Martin suggested changing the name to 5-minute announcements.

Paul Dryman said he’ll be attending the Holiday Program along with his favorite sister who is flying in from De-

troit (incidentally, his only sister!)

Michael Teasdale thanked Darin Arrasmith for his enthusiasm in getting members on board for the Big Broth-

ers/Big Sister’s Holiday Angels Project.

K.T. Connor noted that she was using her points for the Marriott Resort at the Beach in Honolulu. She would

be happy to transfer her and Jere’s RI reservation there to someone who was finding the best hotels were no

longer available (She did receive an immediate request for it.)

Judy Lazar said it’s great to be back.

Jeff Borenstein said he’s now in charge of the vetting process for the club… “Judy?”

Patricia Jones invited members to sponsor a pair of socks for seniors for $5.00/pair. She also thanked Mike and

Jodi Jansen for hosting the Club Holiday Social.

Susan Murata was happily able to visit her grandkids in Oklahoma, where they celebrated her granddaughter’s

21st birthday. She also announced the success of the Hospice of the Conejo’s Christmas Tree event at the Oaks

Mall, where they were $5,000 over last year’s sales.

DECEMBER ROTARY THEME:

DISEASE PREVENTION

AND TREATMENT

FINE SESSION

Cary Runnells took January 1st as his topic. Since he is embarking on a

new career and has been knee-deep in all the federal and state licensure

and regulations necessary to conduct business in California, he thought he

would share the headache of figuring out arcane facts. As such, his

theme was “Tax Regulations in Other States”.

Those fined were: Barb Cornwall, Steve Stanley, Paul Dryman, Kyle Lundberg, Pat McCoy,

Haider Alawami, and Ean Kleiger.
