Dear Friends,
For nearly a half a century, Governors State University (GSU) has served the community
and opened doors to meaningful careers and opportunities for thousands of students. This
remarkable university continues to evolve and deliver high-impact education and value to
students while maintaining its tradition of excellence, accessibility, and community part-
nership. We couldn’t have done it without your generous philanthropy.
Your donations and volunteerism directly impact the lives of our students, empowering
them to achieve their education and career goals. Our patrons are essential to our mission,
since the end result is that students have access to an outstanding education and the re-
sources to grow as professionals. Everything you give makes a difference. Your generosity
creates an example and sets a tradition of philanthropy that today’s students will follow.
As we embark on the next 50 years in GSU history, I invite you to act boldly and join the
GSU family through your private giving and personal involvement, to advance our Universi-
ty as a regional and global leader that continues to move society forward.
Together we can positively impact our students, faculty, region and state by providing for
the students of today and the leaders of tomorrow. The future depends on it. The past 50
years have truly been amazing, and through the continuity of innovation we will continue
to grow and thrive.
Sincerely,
William A. Davis

A GIFT OF TEACHING
A generous gift from Drs. Lisa and Ming Chang will soon provide schol-arships to GSU students specializing in Mathematics Education. Retired Dr. Lisa Chang’s passion for teaching allowed her to live out her true calling at Governors State University. Dr. Lisa Chang urges students, “Once you identify your passion, you should not wait; right away you should carry it out.” For over 40 years, Professor Chang has shared her gift, training future math teachers to be agents of change and transforming the way students learn and conceptualize math. With her strong belief that
teachers have a tremendous responsibility to the students that they serve, Chang said her students frequently ask themselves, “To what extent can I have powerful impact on the students that come across my room?” Professor Chang’s passion for teaching mathematics provided her opportunity to fulfill her personal mission to make a difference in the lives of students, especially those who come from underrepresented communities. Her quest for training the next generation of math teachers who are committed to making a meaningful impact has led her and her husband to establish the Drs. Lisa and Ming Chang Math Education Endowed Scholarship. When asked what their biggest reason for starting the endowment at Governors State, Chang replied, “we feel that it is our turn to give back. We want to make an impact , and we want to do it now.”
A VOLUNTEER’S IMPACT
Liz Brohan has a passion for higher education. The day she sat next to Will Davis, CEO of the GSU Foundation at an Executive’s Club of Chicago breakfast, she knew she wanted to get involved with Governors State. “I fell in love with it,” she said. “I just thought it was a hidden gem of Chicagoland.” Brohan and her team at CBD Marketing have given countless hours to GSU’s “Here, you are.” campaign. From brand development to supporting web presentation, they have donated their time and expertise. “I have always been a champion of higher education. I applaud that 60% of high school students will go on to get a degree. I think those numbers and the opportunities are extremely important to the growth of the world,” Brohan said. “That is really at the heart of what makes me passionate. Then I find this university that embodies that so fully and then reaches out to segments of the community that wouldn’t normally think that a college education was going to be obtainable or in their future, and GSU makes it happen. I think those two combined are an amazing dynamic duo that can change the world.”

Giving Forward
Jim Kvedaras contributed the $100,000 gift that funded the CN Rail Room on GSU’s campus because he sincerely believes corporations need to build partnerships with universities. A GSU graduate, he knows the advantage a degree brings in furthering one’s career. Kvedaras attended UIC early on but left school prematurely to work for the railroad. He said it became apparent to him that if he wanted to achieve the level of success he was after, he would need to complete his formal education. He said Governors State was “the logical choice” for him.
Nearly three decades later, Kvedaras holds a high position with a multi-billion dollar rail company and sees great value in partnering with GSU. “From a corporate perspective,” he said, “corporations need to have awareness of their communities, and reaching out through education is a way to do it. It’s a way to create a long-term goal of joining the industry and wield big influence over long periods of time. When we want labor, we go to job fairs. For our professionals, we need the university.”
Leading By Example
Jermaine Pauls’ affinity for Governors State University began while he was a
student pursing his Masters in Healthcare Administration in 2007. Since
graduating, his connection with GSU has not wavered. Jermaine, who serves as
the President of GSU’s Alumni Association Board of Directors finds great meaning
in his involvement with his alma mater. “GSU helped propel my career and I am
immensely grateful.” The high quality education and opportunity to build
lasting relationships with faculty, students and alums is “unmatched” says Paul.
As president of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, Jermaine champions
meaningful ways to support GSU and encourages fellow alums to play a more active role in the support of our
students. “No matter where you are, you can make a difference at GSU.”
Paul does not just talk the talk, but he backs it up by giving his time, talent and treasure. Paul supports Governors
State University because “I know that things just don’t happen, it takes money and advocacy to push initiatives
forward and I want to do my part to give back to help students succeed.”
In 2019, Governors State University will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. Jermaine believes this milestone will be an
opportunity for alumni to share their stories and return to campus to see the University’s progress. He is pleased to
say that “GSU is no longer the best kept secret.”

DONOR HONOR ROLL FY 2018
The impact of donor philanthropy is seen and felt across the university. From named endowments and facility updates, to student scholarships and faculty support, donors are actively making a difference at GSU. The Campaign for GSU’s annual donor honor roll is an opportunity for us to recognize and thank our generous community of supporters.
