Special Constable Service operates under the
community policing model, adopting the belief that
safety is everyone's responsibility. A student liaison
position is in place to aid in extending the partnerships
between the SCS and the faculty, staff, students and
greater community. This position is mutually beneficial;
fostering positive relationships between the SCS and
the community it serves. The position is 10 hrs per
week and applications are due by Friday April 5 at

As part of the Tshepo Institute for the Study of
Contemporary Africa's Student Development Program, the
Institute has established two student awards, namely:
1) The Nelson Mandela Academic Excellence Award for
Social Justice and Development
2) The Harriet Tubman Academic Excellence Award for
Human Rights and Leadership
The awards will be given out annually at the Tshepo
Institute's Annual General Meeting.
The deadline for this year’s applications is May 30, 2013.

On April 5, from 4-6 pm, students, staff and faculty are aiming to raise $10,000 in the fight against cancer at 50
Wellington St. Nipissing University is teaming up with the Canadian Cancer Society for our event “10 for 10!
Celebrating Nipissing University’s and the Canadian Cancer Society’s Birthdays”.
Students, staff, faculty and community members will be cutting their hair, shaving their heads/mustaches, and
waxing their legs to raise pledges and support for cancer fundraising initiatives. All proceeds will be donated to the
Canadian Cancer Society.

Interview Workshop: Tuesday, April 9 2:00 – 3:00 PM, SC Johnson Building, 214
What do employers really looking for from candidates? Join us as we discuss how to prepare for a successful job
interview. We’ll show you how to: make a positive first impression; present your best qualifications; formulate
answers to common interview questions; and offer you tips on how to reduce stress and maximize your
performance.
1) HR305 FUNDRAISING 0.5: Fundraising is an important skill upon which many organizations advancing human
rights and other causes rely. For some people fundraising forms part of their job; for others it is the focus of their
career. This course introduces students key concepts and methods of fundraising. Topics addressed may include
annual giving, special events, foundation relations, corporate relations, capital campaigns, endowed giving, and the
ethics of fundraising. Prerequisite: SENIOR STUDENT STATUS
Winter 2014: W 7:00 to 9:50. Note: This course IS PENDING SENATE APPROVAL. If approved it will appear in LORIS
later in June.
2) HR365 Immigrant & Ethno-Racial Youth 0.5: This course applies an interdisciplinary approach to the study of
immigrant and ethno-racial youth in Canada and, to a lesser extent, the United States. The course will cover such
topics as: challenges faced by immigrant youth and how they differ from second- and third-generation immigrant
youth; marginality, racism, and exclusion; and the critical role played by the educational experience on the outcomes
of ethno-racial youth. Prerequisite: Senior student status and HR100 or HR260/CT260 or YC100.
This is course is in the process of being added to the list of approved electives for the YOUTH AND CHILDREN’S
STUDIES Honours programs.
3) HR300 Professionalization Seminar 0.5: Human Rights & Human Diversity students to prepare for internships,
postgraduate careers, and graduate study. Students will be introduced to and practice such transferrable skills as
resume and cover letter writing, presentation making, teamwork, grant applications, précis-writing, report writing,
and media monitoring. Students will also explore career options and opportunities for graduate study as well as plan
how to prepare for these opportunities. Prerequisite: HR100, HR260, HR261 and Registration in Honours Human
Rights & Human Diversity
HRHD Honours students are strongly encouraged to enroll in this course.

Are you a graduating student with OSAP loans? Did you receive OSAP funding this year for the first time and want
to learn more about the student loans program? If you fit either of these two categories or if you are somewhere in
between, chances are you have questions concerning your student loans. Don DiMaulo, the Ontario Representative
for the National Student Loans Centre will be presenting an information session on OSAP loan repayments and other
tips. Please join Don and the Student Awards Office for a practical look at what your responsibilities are for keeping
your OSAP loans interest free or starting the repayment process.

The Laurier Brantford Headstart Steering Committee is pleased to announce the opening of the 2013 Headstart
Leader applications. For the 2013 program, 10 students will be hired to lead new students through a summer
orientation program. Students interested in applying for this paid position should complete the application form and

It is the police of the Learning Services Centre not to assist students with take home exams, unless a professor has

Join the Learning Services Centre for another Student Success and Wellbeing Workshop! Participants of this
workshop will have a chance to practice strategies that will help them prepare for and write both objective and essay
style exams. Come to Market Place on April 3 from 5:00-6:00 pm to take part.
Monday, April 8 will be the last day that the Learning Services Centre will hold regular appointments and drop in
hours for the winter term. The online appointment booking system will no longer be available after this date. During

Laurier Brantford Children’s Education & Development students, come celebrate the end of the year with The
Children’s Education & Development Association! CEDA presents our annual Mixer! It will take place on April 3 at
The Hawk and Bell in Harmony Square from 7-10pm with food and prizes provided. Come meet the CEDA
executives and fellow lovely members, enjoy some good food and relax after a long school year! Bring a friend,

Downtown Brantford Research Survey: A survey is being conducted by a student in CT403 Community Internship
for Downtown Brantford Business Improvement Area (BIA). This study will collect information that will assist in the
enhancement of post-secondary student engagement in the downtown area of Brantford (DTB). The desire is to
help remove or mitigate barriers of students in engaging in activities in downtown Brantford. The responses to the
survey will be kept confidential and has been approved by the Laurier Research Ethics Board. The survey will be
