Longinus.

If you stand under the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome there is much to see. Look up and in mosaic you can see the four evangelists

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John on the four corners supporting the dome. Down at the main altar level, there are four statues that are also interesting.

As you stand facing the main altar, over your left shoulder you can find the statue of St. Andrew the younger brother of St. Peter. He carries with him the X shaped cross on which he died.

On the far corner to the left behind the main altar you will find the statue of St. Veronica whose veil wiped the sweat from the face of Jesus as he walked on the way to Calvary carrying his cross. The fifth station of the cross.

On the far right corner you can find St. Helena the mother of the Emperor Constantine who gave reli-gious freedom to Christians in the edict of Milan in 313 AD. Helena is pictured with the true cross of Christ which she found in Israel. She discovered it on the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, supposedly the hill of Calvary on which Christ died.

The statue on the fourth corner behind your right shoulder is even more interesting. It is the statue of Longinus. Who was Longinus? Looking at the statue you might get a clue from what he is holding in his right hand. It is a spear. According to oral tradition, Longinus is the soldier who pierced the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross. Out poured blood and water. Longinus is also reputed to be the centurion who publicly declared on seeing Jesus die “In truth this man was a son of God.” Mark 15;39

The oral tradition further indicates that Longinus after seeing the death of Jesus became a Christian himself. There is even further folklore that Longinus himself assisted in the cleansing of the body of Jesus after it was taken down from the cross. The last word we have is that Longinus was martyred in Cappadocia in central Turkey.

So the next time you visit St. Peter’s Basilica, take a look at the statue of Longinus sculpted by Bernini, more famous for his columns around St. Peter’s Square.

St. Longinus pray for us.

Prayer list Update.

A NEW list will begin

Mar 29-2020

ALL names must be

confirmed by Mar 13.

Call the Parish Office.

Thank you for helping

all to stay up to date

on those needing our

extra prayers!

“Lord Jesus, although it seems incredible, I believe that you are leading me to wholeness and holiness!”

To live is to change! Today, ask the Lord how he wants you to grow and change. Let Him shine the light of His love on your heart. Let him show you the person you are meant to be and the person you are right now. May you change—and often– throughout Lent. Create a heart in which He can dwell.

Kid’s Tip:

So here is something to think about; since God thinks you are

special and since many people think you are special, isn't it time for

you to agree with them? Of course it is! It is time to say: “God

created only one of you.” to the person in the mirror.

A Prayer to help you remember: Dear Jesus, today and every

day, I will do my best to see the good in those I meet and to love

myself as YOU love me….unconditionally. Amen
