Weather and the Winter Carnival
With rain forecast everyday this week I hope people were able to get out and enjoy the lovely sunny weather on the weekend. Watching the kids play their winter sports is so much more enjoyable (or bearable) with the warm sun on your back!
Many of the year 5s and 6s are compe ng against other schools, in various sports, at the Winter Carnival on Wednesday. Rain is forecast for Wednesday and any forecast greater than ‘a few showers’ or showers with the risk of lightening will cause the Carnival to be cancelled. Due to unpredictability of weather, the decision to cancel the Winter Carnival could be made as late as Wednesday morning. In the event of cancella on parents will be no fied via a message on the school flexibuzz app. Parents who do not yet have the app can get it at h p://www.flexibuzz.com.au/au/school‐app/
Road Safety and Awareness
Traffic concerns and driver awareness and considera on con nue to be the substance of many complaints. With hundreds of children being picked up at the end of the day, it is greatly appreciated that the majority of parents are considerate of others and road rules. It is unfortunate that a minority can make pick up me problema c for EVERYONE.
We would like to recognise those parents who consistently do the right thing, are polite, considerate and genuinely help to make pick up me work for the school community.
Next term we will be handing out ‘show/goodie’ bags (to a parent/family each week) in recogni on of Road Safety and/or Road Awareness. The bags have goodies which include; fabric shopping bags, drink bo les, sta onery and vouchers. We would like to thank the following businesses who have supported our Road Safety by supplying items for the bags:

WA Police
Chipmunks
Coles Secret Harbour

Media Concerns re: children in online environment
Recently there have been significant concerns expressed in the media about children being at risk in online gaming situa ons. Games, apps and social networking sites are popular among children and adults alike but children need careful monitoring to ensure their safety.

All informa on provided is factual and it is up to each individual to decide whether an app, game or social networking site is appropriate for themselves and their family. Any app or game that allows users to interact with others, including people they may not know, presents a poten al risk of unwanted contact.
Roblox
Roblox is a great game with lots of poten al to develop thinking and planning skills. It is very popular with children and growing in use. It does however, enable connec ons with others in an online environment. The following guide shows parents how to use simple controls and steps to keep kids safe as they use Roblox.

Remember to have computers and devices in a public area of the home, to monitor use and control the amount of me children are on these. Seek help if your child is overly focussed on online games or you have concerns about their safety.
Parents’ role in Our Friendly School
Research has demonstrated that efforts to change a tudes and behaviour of students are more likely to be successful if parents are ac vely involved and feel a sense of shared ownership of the process.
What can parents do to support ac vi es in the school to reduce bullying?
Talk regularly with your children about bullying;
Encourage your children to ‘ask for help’ if they are being bullied at school;
If your children are figh ng at home, help them discuss their problem and come to a mutual solu on to the problem;
Encourage your children to be asser ve by helping them prac se speaking in a firm but friendly way, making eye contact, looking calm and smiling and feeling good about themselves;
Encourage your children to play with other children at school, at home and in the neighbourhood; and
Help your children improve their self‐esteem by discussing the things they are good at, encouraging your children to ‘have‐a‐go’ at new ac vi es, and encouraging your children to develop their own independence by allowing them to care for their belongings or manage their pocket money.

How Parents Can Support Young People’s Mental Health
Parents play a key role in helping children develop good mental

encouraging posi ve mental health behaviours during adolescence.
These posi ve habits will support young people’s health and
wellbeing in all life domains into the future.
Build a strong founda on
Parents can help children and young people build good mental health
habits by suppor ng them to:
eat well, get plenty of sleep and be ac ve
discover ac vi es they enjoy
find ways to express their feelings
modelling posi ve interpersonal and conflict resolu on skills
when communica ng with other adults in the presence of children.
