Week 8 Term 1 2020 Dear Parents and Carers, Despite the cancellation of the Greater Kengal Harmony Day celebrations, the event still went ahead at Yerong Creek Public School. It was a fantastic day, and the Year 5 and 6 students showed great leadership in their organisation of the Indigenous Games afternoon rotations. Thank you to the P and C committee for organising the lunch orders for the day, and to Tracey for driving the orders for our Greater Kengal schools so they did not miss out! Mrs Noske and I attended one of the last training sessions to go ahead this term- the drama professional development, held at the Hothouse Theatre in Albury. It was a very valuable session, and the data shows that in schools that have run the program, significant improvements have been made in student learning in literacy. We are very excited to see this being undertaken in our school. As you are all aware, the Corona Virus pandemic is having implications for school events. Last night saw the final meeting of the P and C committee until further notice. In addition, the Cross Country has been postponed until further notice, and we have been busy sending home the list of other cancelled or postponed school events. If you have any questions about specific events please do not hesitate to contact the school. We will send home information as it comes to hand. One of our main aims for the staff at the present time is in making sure we are prepared to continue to provide for the educational needs of all our students in the event that the school has an unplanned closure. We are currently preparing a folder of work that can be done at home (paper based). In addition to this, the login and password card have been included in the pack for any students who have access to the internet. We are very aware that the majority of our students live in areas with very poor internet coverage, so the main component of our planning is focused around paper based learning. I would like to inform the school community that, pending the Department of Education 10 day appeal process, I have been offered and have accepted the permanent Principal position at Yerong Creek Public School. I am excited to accept the position and look forward to continuing to work in partnership with you, in order to provide the best educational outcomes for your children. Until next time, stay safe and well. Kym Poidevin – Principal

K-2 News Our class has been busy refining our persuasive writing skills this fortnight. Currently, we have finished reading The Gruffalo, and students have been writing to him to convince him why they wouldn’t be the best thing to eat! In maths we have been revising our range of strategies to try and identify the most efficient way to solve a maths problem. This takes lots and lots of practice, and the students have been very willing to try different ways of solving a problem. We have also been investigation patterns- shapes, colours, and number patterns. Our class has spent time reflecting this week on school and class rules, keeping our hands and feet to ourselves, and how to stay safe and well by following good hygiene practices. In addition, we have been busy programming and filming our Blubots before they have to be packed off and sent to the next school next week! We will look at buying a school set later in the year as we all loved getting to interact with them Until next time Kym Poidevin K-2 teacher 3-6 Class News Students attended a ‘Virtual Classroom’ session on Tuesday as part of the National Day of Action against Bullying. ‘Respectful Chat, I can do that!’ was presented by the esafety Commissioner. In this presentation students explored skills to build positive online relationships. They considered the emotions that appear when they or a friend are having a bad online experience. They also considered what cyberbullying is and strategies for seeking support for serious incidents. This week in mathematics we are finishing our focus on addition and subtraction and next week will turn our focus to patterns and algebra. In writing we are continuing to explore the language features and devices of persuasive texts. Our STEM robotic kits are sadly making their way to the next school next week. We will now focus on some other STEM challenges in science. Have a great fortnight😊😊 Mrs Noske

SRC Members Interested students presented a speech to the school on their personal attributes to be chosen as a School Representative Council member. The following students have been chosen for this year: Kiana-Leise Serenity Thomas Riley Ryan Patrick Congratulations to these students, we look forward to your ideas and suggestions for the school for this year. NAPLAN- Online Yerong Creek Public had successfully transitioned to NAPLAN Online a couple of years ago and will continue with this method this year. Years 3 and 5 will sit practise tests next week with the actual tests being held from Tuesday 12 May to Friday 22 May, based on the timetable. An information sheet for parents and carers is attached to this newsletter. School Fees The school fees are made up of a book levy and voluntary contributions. This is the same as last year at $50 per student. Book Levy - is $40 per student, which contributes towards the textbooks and all the consumables the students use during the year, eg pencils, pens, rulers, folders, home reading book, etc. Voluntary contributions – is $10 for each student, which helps the school with items like tissues, soap, etc. Please send in by Friday 27 March or contact the school to discuss a payment plan.

Specialist allied health services for students with disability

Under the Disability Standards for Education 2005, schools are required to meet the disability needs of students to enable them to engage in education on the same basis as other students. To meet these obligations, school staff sometimes need specialist support from allied health professionals.

The Department is creating a panel of prequalified allied health providers to help schools to source and purchase a range of allied health supports. This scheme will provide schools with a streamlined way to source appropriate allied health services for their students and the staff who support those students.

Services that can be sourced from the scheme include:

• Speech pathology • Occupational therapy • Physiotherapy • Exercise physiology • Specialist behaviour support

Assisted School Travel Program (ASTP) covers travel to and from home to school for eligible participants.

From 1 March 2020, NDIS participants will be able to use their plan’s core support funding to claim service provider costs associated with transporting participants to and from NDIS funded community-based activities. Providers can claim the transport funding as a separate item as part of the support they are delivering to participants. They will be able to claim some of their vehicle running costs when offering transport to a participant in conjunction with the community activities identified in their NDIS plan.
