Week 6 Term 2, 24 May 2012 Dear Parents, It was with sadness that we began our week with the news that a former student at St Augustine’s had lost his life in a car accident over the weekend. Michael Bajada attended our school from 1997 until 2003 when he graduated as a Grade 6 student. Michael was a vibrant fun loving student who enjoyed all the things that St Augustine’s boys enjoy: basketball, football, soccer and downball. As long as he had a ball in his hand and a few mates to play with Michael was happy. Michael left St Augustine’s to join his brother at St Bernard’s where he completed his VCE. He was a student at RMIT in his third year of advertising. Our sympathy and prayers are extended to his mother Janet, his father Jim and his older brother Jacob. May Michael rest peacefully. Our sympathies and prayers are also extended to the Healey family (Jaylen Gr P) on the passing into eternal life of Joanne and Martin’s sister-in-law. May Sandra rest in eternal peace. Our sorrow is not that of loss but the tender sense of sadness that comes in saying goodbye to someone we love. May today’s sorrow give way to the peace and comfort of God’s love.

Week 6 Term 2, 24 May 2012

Dear Parents,

It was with sadness that we began our week with the news

that a former student at St Augustine’s had lost his life in a

car accident over the weekend. Michael Bajada attended

our school from 1997 until 2003 when he graduated as a

Grade 6 student. Michael was a vibrant fun loving student

who enjoyed all the things that St Augustine’s boys enjoy:

basketball, football, soccer and downball. As long as he had

UNIFORM NEWS

School Jackets Some jackets arrived this week and have been distributed to the children. We hope that there is another follow up delivery later this week for those still waiting. The issue – off shore manufacturing. Why? Because there is no manufacturer in Australia. The alternative is to scrap it but I think that it looks good and provides extra warmth on those cool mornings The jacket is not an alternative to our woollen jumpers – it is just a jacket. Fawn Tights/Brown Tights

Either are okay! Socks need to be fawn – not white, black, purple .... Sports Uniform

This is to be worn on sports day only (listed on the calendar)l. This means that it is worn on Wednesday or Thursday with the 5/6’s wearing it on Friday for Interschool Sport. Names on Jumpers

If jumpers are named, they are easier to return. Here’s a great idea – have it embroidered with you family name – any embroidery shop will do it.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AT ST AUGUSTINE’S

The safety of all members of the

St Augustine’s community is paramount

Therefore we ensure our emergency procedures are well rehearsed and stream lined. This gives us confidence in our ability to respond appropriately to a variety of emergency situations. Last week EMQ (Crisis and Emergency Management) observed an emergency practice drill that involved a lockdown. Everyone moved from outside to a secure indoor area. Previously we have had evacuation drills. Getting used to the emergency signals, knowing where to move to and being able to respond. Random practice drills will continue throughout the year to ensure our preparedness in case of an emergency.

Parents, we need your help.

We need YOU to:

Always enter via the front office when entering the school buildings between 8:45 am and 3:15 pm

Sign in via the diary at reception using easily recognisable writing and accurate time

Wear a visitor’s badge

Sign out via the diary at reception when you leave the premises

If an emergency exercise takes place whilst you are on the premises, follow all instructions given by staff

Talk to your child about following instructions and remaining calm during an emergency drill

THE SECRET TO BETTER PARENTING. SSH, DON’T TELL THE KIDS! If only our children were more co-operative, obliging and compliant, life would be so much better. We’ve all probably rung our hands in frustration at why our children won’t sleep/listen to us/keep their room tidy! Or why they can’t eat every morsel on their plate/stop whinging/do their jobs without being asked twenty million times! If only our children were more co-operative, obliging and compliant, life would be so much better. But that’s not most people’s every-day reality. Kids misbehave, make mistakes and challenge us. That’s their job. It’s our job to raise them despite this. But there is one very important point about parenting that can help you manage the most challenging of your kids’ behaviour. It is not them, it’s you. When it comes to raising our kids, we experience many challenges – challenging behaviours from our kids and challenging emotions within ourselves. How you handle the situation says more about you than it does about the situation or your children. You can guide, influence and teach others, including your children, but you cannot control them. You can only control yourself. It isn’t about blame or who caused what behaviour. It is about how you want to behave. We’ve probably all had moments when we’ve stayed the calm, confident parent we would always like to be, and other times when we haven’t. Instead of pointing the finger at our children’s problem behaviour, it helps to look a little closer to home.

3 reasons why this helps… You have the power... We can often feel powerless when our children are misbehaving. We don’t know what to do to make them behave differently. But when you focus on what you can control – yourself – you actually feel more power in the situation. You decide how you would like to behave and you no longer feel powerless. You lead the way... Our kids aren’t always listening to us but they are watching us. You are a role model for your children. When you behave well in a situation with your child, they learn what is appropriate behaviour. And you feel so much better about yourself. You set the tone... Yelling plus yelling often equals more yelling. But yelling plus calm often leads to calm. The students are quickly learning basic chords on their ukulele and some can already play entire songs changing smoothly from chord to chord. It is important that your child practises regularly. To this end, the students will be bringing home a ‘Ukulele Record Sheet’. They need to bring the record sheet to you for a signature after they have practised. They will receive merit stickers at lessons for when they have completed a suitable amount of practises. Remember that in order to progress and enjoy the classes, the students need to keep up with their peers. Your help is needed here in helping them find a regular time to practise. First thing in the morning is great. They do not need to be playing for a long time. 10 minutes a day will see great results! At the end of the term, we will be having a “Show Off” lesson. This is where the students need to play a piece of music to the class. They may play with a partner or in a small group. The student’s progress is quite varied so I have included a variety of songs on “Music” myclasses page. The students can choose a song and learn it at home. They are also very welcome to choose a song of their own. There are some wonderful ukulele sites. Here are just a few I would recommend.

For my oral language I had to interview my Nonno. I asked him the questions we came up with in class. I had to skype him in Caulonia (in Italy). He sent me photos of him when he was a little boy. I learnt that they used to use ink bottles, the library bags were made of wood and they got the strap when they were naughty. Mum and Dad learnt these new things too.

I am good at organising. Gemma is good at sorting, Jonah is very strong. This is how we work as a team. First I make sure that everyone has a different job to do. Gemma then makes sure that all the toys are in the right boxes. When our jobs are completed, Jonah carries the heavy boxes to the right spot. Micah likes to stack the boxes and then we take turns to make sure that Isaac doesn’t make a mess again!

The latest issue of Scholastic Book Club was distributed on Thursday 17th May. Two full weeks are allowed for selection of titles; collation of class lists and online ordering of books then takes place. All orders must be in for this current issue by Thursday 31st May.

You should allow seven to ten working days for delivery. Please try to place exact money (if paying cash) for your books in a sealed envelope, and write your child’s name and grade clearly on the front. Also remember to please include the tear-off for your order. Orders should be returned by students to their classroom teacher.

Mother’s Day Raffle winners….. Year 1 /2B is a lucky place to be with both Mother’s Day Raffle winners coming from that room. First prize was won by a friend of Aiden’s and second prize was proudly collected by Kaja. We hope Filomena and Barbara and all our Mums and Grandmothers enjoyed their day of being made to feel extra special.
