I hope that all our mothers had a great day last Sunday and were spoilt by the children. Thank you to our P&C volunteers who once again organised an amazing gift stall. I have been very impressed by the quality of learning that is taking place in our classes. I have received some very positive feedback about our Home Reading program and I look forward to recognising and celebrating our students that have achieved 75 nights of reading already. Well done to the students who are reading regularly at home each night. Too sick for school As the cold weather hits, so do the winter bugs. It’s often hard to know whether to send your child to school or let them stay home to recover, especially when that means an adult cancelling work. For safety's sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice. School A to Z and the NSW Health have created an at-a-glance chart to help answer your questions about common childhood illness and how long sick kids need to miss school. Find it by typing this link into your web browser www.bit.ly/1hytn2E Mental maths strategies We teach children a range of different strategies to add and subtract numbers. By showing them several methods for solving maths questions, we’re helping them to look for patterns. All this builds a good sense of “number” which means they understand the relationships between different numbers and why different ways to add and subtract work well. The goal is that your child will understand many ways to approach a maths problem and will be able to choose a way that makes the most sense to them. Kindergarten are doing a brilliant job in their classrooms and on the playground. They are loving the option of going down to the “big playground” to play.

Maths games went home last Wednesday. These are a fun way of engaging the students with numeracy skills. They need to be returned every Monday and you will get a new game every Wednesday. Have fun, sometimes it’s the best way to learn.

A big thumbs up to everyone who received a RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY or PERSONAL BEST award at our mini assembly. Keep up the great work.

Stephanie Ainslie, Nicole Quye, Amanda Roberts and Mardi McFarlane. STAGE 1 NEWS

Stage 1 children had a wonderful time making Mothers’ Day cards and thoroughly enjoyed buying their precious gifts at the Mothers’ Day stall. The Stage 1 teachers hope that all the mothers had a very special Mothers’ Day. Last Friday night was our “Movie under the Stars” night. The children had a great time snuggling up

and watching the movie with their friends and family. Our sincere thanks go to Ms Bayfield and Ms Wilson for organising this event. Home reading is important as a tool to consolidate class work and we all know that practice makes perfect. It is also a lovely way to connect with your child, spending quality time with them as they read to you. Keep up the good work. Stage1 Shelter Assignment is due in a couple of weeks. Start making your shelters which can be real or imaginary, from any country in the world. In addition to the shelter model your child will need to submit a written project in a book, or on cardboard, or as a power point presentation. Also each child will need to prepare palm cards for their oral presentation. It has been very pleasing to see Stage 1 children coming to school in full school uniform, showing pride and respect for their school.

Regards STAGE 1 TEACHERS STAGE 2 NEWS

Stage Two had a You Can Do It Fun Day yesterday. Students engaged in fun activities associated with their emotional and social competencies such as resilience, confidence, getting along, persistence and organisation. Students engaged in activities that will build these personal competencies. It involved fun team games and activities. This was an exciting learning

experience for all students in Stage Two, look out for photos in the next newsletter!

A fortnight ago Stage Two students had a Science Fun Day. Students engaged in investigations and experiments in science. They rotated through such activities as making goo with cornflour and lava lamps. Students made gliders and floating devices with paddle pop sticks. Other experiments include exploding lunch bags involving investigations with general household chemicals. Please see some of our goo photos.

Home Reading – Have you taken the challenge? In the last newsletter, we mentioned that only 22% of Stage 2 students have received an award for home reading. We set a challenge to increase this to 50% by the end of the term. Remember to find a great book, website, newspaper or magazine that you love and read every night for 10 minutes. CAPA Groups Students are enjoying CAPA groups on Thursday afternoons. This is a Stage 2 program where all students participate in creative teaching and learning opportunities that allow them to express themselves creatively through visual arts, drama, dance and music.

Please ask your child what activity they are doing and what they are learning in their CAPA group.

Cross Country The Primary Cross Country Carnival was postponed and will now be held on Friday 15th May. It is an expectation that all students participate. Students who participate earn points for their house team which will contribute towards the total points that decide the end of term sports reward. If your child has asthma, please ensure they have their inhaler on them during the day. If parents, family and friends wish to come along, they are most welcome. Stage Assembly Due to the cross country our stage assembly will not be on at the usual time. It will be held on Monday 18th May at 10:45 (Week 5) and it will be hosted by 3R. Below are the award winners from last fortnight’s assembly. Aren’t they fantastic!

NAPLAN Year 3 students are in the middle of completing their NAPLAN assessments this week. It is a very tiring experience for them so please ensure they are getting plenty of sleep and eating a good breakfast before coming to school. We wish them well.

Camp Update Just a reminder to keep making regular camp payments. It will be here before we know it!

Maths This term we have looked at addition and subtraction and the relationship between them. The children are learning that we can ‘undo’ addition with subtraction. Try some of these types of questions at home. 7 + = 35 35 – 7 = If you have a Pintrest Page, I have added a link for learning Doubles. Pintrest is a great source for finding engaging activities to assist your child with their learning www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=doubles%20maths.

English The students are learning about informative texts this term. They are enjoying researching, performing procedures to make things and learning how things work. Here is a simple procedure for them to try. Let them make it and then write a journal about what they did.

No-cook play dough recipe Ingredients • 1 cup salt • 3 cups plain flour • 60ml (1 tbsp) vegetable oil • Food colouring • 250ml (1 cup) water Method 1. Mix all the dry ingredients and add oil 2. Add the food colouring to water 3. Slowly add the water until the desired consistency is

reached 4. Kneading will help to improve the texture, so let

your kids get into it!

STAGE 3 NEWS Hey Team, Each Stage 3 class has been busy at work over the last fortnight, focused hard on their learning and working on their current learning goals. Students are using their Student Planners on a daily basis and these are proving to be a very effective student organizational tool. Please check your child’s

Student Diary every week and discuss some of the things that that they have been learning. Tumbi High School Tours Many of our Year 6 students ventured up to Tumbi High last Tuesday with their parents/caregivers and caught their first glimpse of the Tumbi Campus in preparation for high school next year. It was great experience and students who did attend have come back to TEPS with a greater understanding and appreciation of what is awaiting them next year. Further information will be given out shortly regarding the rest of the Year 6 transition program. Student Assessments Over the next couple of weeks Stage 3 students will be sitting their first semester assessments. Students in Year 5 will sit NAPLAN next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Stage 3 teachers will be writing student reports for first semester as soon as student assessments have been completed. Have a great week team! Russell Stefans Assistant Principal- Stage 3 [email protected]

SCHOOL UNIFORM Wearing school uniform is a vital part of the culture of The Entrance Public School and it is the expectation that all students come dressed each day wearing full school uniform.

Of late we have noticed a marked increase in the number of students coming to school each day out of school uniform.

We would really appreciate the support of parents and caregivers in monitoring what their child wears to school each day and in ensuring that what is worn is consistent with our school uniform standards here at The Entrance Public School (please see our website or app for further details on our uniform or visit our uniform shop during opening hours).

Students who are found to be out of school uniform will receive a note indicating such and this note will be sent home.

Understanding that we are all part of a greater team is an important attribute when we are growing up and one that sets us in good stead in years to come.
