President Peter welcomed Honorary Member Syd Garrett, Guest speaker Kristine Matheson, John Payne visiting from Epping R.C., Helen and Dudley Horscroft (sister & brother in law of Frank

Adorjan), Frank Goldstein, former Rotarian of Surfers Paradise and famous for his pies (he even enjoyed the pies served on Tuesday), Margaret Sifter (friend of Frank), Marie, Shelley, Lynn &

Ester – guests of Graham Sivyer and finally all the partners of Broadeach Rotarians in attendance.

President’s Report Greetings Fellow Rotarians, Great meeting last week having our partners and friends present. With more than fifty attending we just managed to squeeze into the room. Our speaker Kristine Matheson was no doubt part of the attraction, speaking on how she overcame terminal cancer. There is always going to be some controversy when discussing the virtues of alternative therapies to radiation / chemotherapy. However, Dr Graham Sivyer was quick to his feet to defend the medical profession, when question time arrived, ably assisted by Phil Moore, to back him up. All in all a most interesting discussion, on this important health topic. Next week is a fellowship night with an opportunity to catch-up with each other and raise any items of general interest. Yours in Rotary Service, Peter Gowans.

Man behind the Badge

Ray Milton

Born on Good Friday in March 1945 in Brisbane, Ray has never again had his birthday fall on Good Friday. Father worked for CAA (became Qantas) and in 1947 the family moved to PNG. In the early fifties his family shipped him off to boarding school in Memphis Tennesee, his Grandmother also moved to Memphis and worked in the Piedmont Hotel where she became acquainted with Elvis and many other stars who stayed there. Following Memphis, Ray went to boarding school in Brisbane for the next 6 years of his life. He was better at boxing than academia and represented his house (Rudd House), and made the final every year, but never managed to beat the reigning champ.

His first job was with the Commonwealth Department of Supply as Supply Officer for the Defence Force. During this time he developed an interest in First Aid and became their First Aid Officer. This provoked a career change and he spent 8 years in the Ambulance at Witham Centre. He moved on then to join IBC and in the late sixties he moved to the Gold Coast and into Real Estate. His Father bought a Real Estate business and Ray joined him in this venture. During his Real Estate career, Ray became a volunteer with the Real Estate Institute and also headed up First National Real Estate in Queensland. He moved full time in to the institute as Regional Manager REIQ and has also been invited back to PNG to establish a Real Estate Institute there. Ray has been married to June for 13 years, they have 6 children and many grandchildren.

A very moving and joyful occasion.

Police Officer of the Year Gala Ball Chairman Ray advised that a meeting had been held with the Police representatives, that morning and it was decided that this event will be held at Jupiter’s Casino on Sunday 29th August. Tickets, which will include 3 course dinner, all drinks and entertainment are expected to cost in the order of $80 – 300 tickets will need to be sold. It was also decided that our individual permanent awards will be presented to all previous winners, for them to keep – it has become increasingly difficult to get last years winner to give back the “Shield”.

Here are the individual awards Sergeant Russ

The bigger the crowd, the happier he looks – I wonder why???????? Neil Jones, Tina Rambaldini and Graham Sivyer were his Bunyip helpers to collect his ill gotten gains.

Guest Speaker

Last week, Rotary hosted Kristine Matheson, who mad e a controversial presentation on the self treatment of hers and her husband’s cancers. She has published a book titled "From Cancer to Wel lness", which has sold 10,000 copies. A re- print has been ordered. The book outlines her experiences dealing with her own cancer treatments, including diets, rest, and her naturopathic treatment. She looked extremely well and enjoys competition da ncing. She certainly has a fighting spirit. Klaus Axmann, as the evenings Speaker Host, introdu ced Kristine whom he had met professionally, some 12 months earlier. She identified stress as a major contributor to her s & her husband’s illness---they were master builders during the mid-80`s. As well, she was affe cted by Chronic Fatigue, in 1987.

Her quote--"Get your body in-line" through a recomm ended diet--eat 3 meals daily, made from fresh ingredients, including sea foods & white meats. Eg gs containing protein are a good healer. She underwent a food detox programme. To overcome their cancers, they generally used a v egetarian style diet. Spicy foods and white sugar--"which seems to be in everything", were not part of her diet. Low intake of animal fats. Being over weight is not good--the frequency of dia betes in people of all ages, being a real concern--the self treatment of her’s and her husband’s cance rs was a journey requiring lots of self discipline , including a regular exercise routine . She claimed that-"Doctors do not treat the cause of the disease--rather, they treat the problem" (our own Dr. Graham Sivyer, had a few words on that subj ect). Her alternative to Medically Prescribed Chemo & Rad io therapy, was stated as-- " proper food & exercise". Her closing remark being, that, "She would not put herself through the effects from medically prescribed medicines, in the treatment of cancers." "With cancer-- there are 2 paths that one can trave l" A series of questions followed her talk, from medic al people & sufferers of cancer. Klaus thanked Kristine for her time and presented h er with our usual memento. scribe-Ian Cowen.

Secretarial Winge At the request of members we made this an evening to invite partners and friends – in order to ensure we had enough seats and meals, I requested that members advise me of their intention to attend and if they were bringing guests – also, as usual, any special dietary requirements. I had 7 apologies and 20 responses from Rotarians advising of 31 attendees, with 3 different vegetarian meal requirements. O.K. – should I have booked for 31 people?? I guessed not, and on my own responsibility, I booked for 50. In the event 56 people showed up (so we did not have quite enough seats) and 10 people requested vegetarian meals – even the hotel has complained about that.

If anyone can propose a way to overcome this problem, I will be happy to hear it.

Sec. Brian.

A second grader came home from school and said to h er grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her

cool.. "That's interesting," she said, "how do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'." ………………………………………………

Sister Mary Ann, who worked for a home health agenc y, was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients when she ran out of petrol. As l uck would have it, a Shell Petrol station was just a block away. She walked to the station to borrow a can and buy some petrol. The attendant told her that the only can he owned had been loaned out, but she could wait until it wasreturned. Since Sister

Mary Ann was on the way to see a patient, she decid ed not to wait and walked back to her car. She looked for something in her car that she could fill with petrol and spotted the bedpan she was taking to the patient. Always resourceful, Sister M ary Ann carried the bedpan to the station, filled i t

with petrol, and carried the full bedpan back to he r car. As she was pouring the petrol into her tank, two Ba ptists watched from across the street. One of

them turned to the other and said, 'If it starts, I'm turning Catholic.'

…………………………………………. My musical director wasn't happy with the performan ce of one of our percussionists. Repeated

attempts to get the drummer to improve failed. Fina lly, in front of the orchestra, the director said i n frustration, "When a musician just can't handle his instrument, they take it away, give him two sticks

and make him a drummer!" A stage whisper was heard from the percussion secti on: "And if he can't handle that, they take away

one of his sticks and make him a conductor." ………………………………………….

Yesterday was Groundhog Day. In fact, when the grou ndhog came out of his hole, he didn't even look for his shadow; he just said he was walking aw ay from his mortgage.
