Monday 6th July
Our topic this week is PIRATES! Watch our story for this week: ‘Pirates Love Underpants!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd8_Y1bEzA8 Today, we are going to get ready and plan to make a pirate map tomorrow. You will tea stain paper for your map & will think about what the treasure will be for the pirates to discover! The pirates in the story are searching for golden underpants!! What treasure will you be looking for? Diamonds? Gold coins? Jewellery? Draw the treasure in the treasure chest below, or on your own paper, and write a sentence describing your treasure.
This week, we are focusing on 2d shapes: Watch 2d shape song & join in with the shape names: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTeqUejf3D0&t=2s Using the 2d shape flashcards below, become really comfortable with naming the 2d shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, pentagon, hexagon & octagon. Once you are comfortable with all of the 2d shape names, cut out the collage shapes below to create a pirate ship collage like this: Can you use all 8 different types of shape in your ship collage & name them?

In our ‘Pirates Love Underpants’ story, the Captain uses a treasure map to find the golden underpants! Using your tea-stained paper you made yesterday, draw a pirate treasure map & label the places on it, just like this map:
Will it have a volcano? Forest? Sinking sand? Snapping crocodiles? Don’t forget ‘x marks the spot’ to show where the treasure is hidden, ‘start’ & ‘end’.
Using the ‘Shape Properties’ poster below, discuss the number of sides each shape has. The sides on a shape are the curved or straight lines which make up the shape. Using the shape cut-outs below, sort the shapes onto the correct poster, either:
This shape has 1 side
This shape does not have 1 side (more than 1 side)
Get your child to run their finger along each side as they count them.

Treasure map instructions: Look at your pirate treasure map you made yesterday. Using the template below, or on your own paper, write instructions to help you follow the treasure map: e.g. ‘First walk through the forest. Next go up the volcano’ etc. . . Use your instructions & map to go on a treasure hunt around your house
Corners on 2d shapes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTeqUejf3D0&t=2s Using the ‘Shape Properties’ poster below, discuss the number of corners each shape has. The corners on a shape are the sharp pointy bits where 2 sides meet. Some shapes have no corners! Using the shape cut-outs below, sort the shapes onto the correct poster, either:
This shape has 3 corners
This shape does not have 3 corners

Treasure Hunt! Hide some “treasure” somewhere in your house! Use your imagination to create the landmarks on your map (e.g. create your volcano using sofa cushions, a blanket for your river . . .) Using your treasure map and instructions, go on your treasure hunt with your family!
Don’t forget to wear your pirate hat!
Thursday 9th July
Pirate Science Experiment: Follow the Science experiment instructions below. You will need:
A bottle or container
Water
Oil
Small objects to test if they will float or sink in the oil & water: e.g. a Lego piece, stone, coin, cork . . .
Using the ‘My Pirate Experiment’ sheet below, first write down your guess about what will float or sink. Then test it out and write down if you were correct!
‘Guess the Shape’ game: Cut out the large 2d shapes below & place them into a bag. Secretly take out a shape but don’t let your family member see it! DO NOT SAY WHAT YOUR SHAPE IS! Instead, describe your shape, saying how many sides and corners it has: e.g. “It has 4 sides. It has 4 corners. All of the sides are the same size.” See if your family member can guess what shape it is! Now swap – can you now guess what the shape is?!

Message in a Bottle: Imagine you are a pirate, stuck on a desert island!
The only way to get help is to write a message, put it in a bottle & let it float out to sea so someone can find it and send help! Write a message like, “Help me! I am stuck on an island!”, roll it up & put it onto a bottle.
Making 2d shapes: You will need the following objects from around the house:
Objects with straight lines such as lolly-sticks, straws, toothpicks . . .
Selection of small objects such as pebbles, raisins, buttons . . .
Using the objects, call out a 2d shape name and see if your child can make it using the objects. Follow the parent instructions below for the activity . . .
