• We also use other approaches to suit children's

different levels and needs in small group teaching and

intervention.

• Children entering Phase Five will already be able to read and spell words with adjacent consonants, such as trap, string and flask. They will also be able to read and spell some polysyllabic words (in phonics phase 4, Polysyllabic words means words with more than three syllables, eg, hippopotamus,, misunderstanding etc) Children should also be able to read and spell some compound words ( compound words means when two words are put together to form a new word. E.g raincoat, windmill, desktop etc)

• In Phase Five, children will learn more graphemes and phonemes. For example, they already know ai as in rain, but now they will be introduced to ay as in day and a-e as in make.

• Alternative pronunciations for graphemes will also be introduced, e.g. ea in tea, head and break.

• With practice, speed at recognising and blending graphemes will improve. Word and spelling knowledge will be worked on extensively.

• 4 Phonics lessons per week from Monday – Thursday.25 minutes per lesson.

Discreet phonics teaching also come in the following teachingsessions

• Friday SPAG lesson

• Guided reading Monday – Friday.

• Whole class discreet reading session (book talk and comprehension)

• Weekly spelling

• The Phonics Screening Test (otherwise known as the "Year 1 Phonics Screening" or "Phonics Test") is a short phonics assessment. The first Phonics Screening Test took place in June 2012.

• The Phonics Test is a compulsory test. It is part of the national curriculum assessment programme

• The Phonics Screening Test seeks to test whether children have learned to decode words using phonics to the required level.

• Children are expected to sound out and blend graphemes to read simple words. They are also required to read phonically decodable one-syllable and two-syllable words.

• If a child fails the Phonics Screening Check then they are required to take it again at the end of Year 2.

• Your child's teacher or other teachers will carry out their Year 1 Phonics Screening.

• The Year 1 Phonics test will take place in a relaxed environment

• Your child will sit with the teacher and be asked to read 40 words aloud. Some words will be simple and familiar, some will be more complex and some will be "non-sense words“ or "alien words“ which are made up fake words that are used to test a child's ability to use phonics. For example:

Simple valid word : chum, short.Complex valid word : feast, shape.Non-word : murbs, blard.

• After all children nation-wide have completed the Year 1 Phonics Screening, a pass markwill be published. The pass mark for past Phonics Tests is typically between 30-32 marks.( 2019 was 32)

• There is no formal time limit. It usually takes around 10-15 minutes to complete the test.

Use the Phonics practise pack. In each pack, you will have

• Basic information about the phonics test, useful links of website for information or games.

• A set of sound mats, tricky words mat (phase 2 to phase 5)

• A set of reading words (including real words and alien words) per week.

• A new set of reading words will be sent home every Friday.

The pack will be sent home at end of this week.

• You can start with revisiting the sounds on the sound mats ofeach phase. Make note of the sounds your child is unsureabout.

• You can challenge your children by asking them to give someexample of words with that sound in. E.g ay for play, pay andstay; ai for rain, pain and gain.

• Practise sight reading tricky words.

• Practise reading real and alien words of the week.

If they find some words tricky, simply remind them that they can

• Say each sound in the word from left to right.Blend the sounds together using robot hands.

• Use reading finger under the letters, letter combinations or the whole word as they say it.

• Not rushing.

• Being patient and positive.

• Giving encouragement and praise.
