Public want better Komuter serviceStory and photo by ELAN [email protected]

COMMUTERS, having long been driven up the wall by the irregular Komuter train services are

demanding that KTM Berhad address the problem immediately.

They claim that the service is getting from bad to worse, especially after KTM reduced the frequency

    of trains early this year.

The move to increase the waiting time from 15 minutes to 30 minutes has aggravated the situation.

A check by StarMetro revealed that the commuters were made to wait for a minimum of 30 minutes

before they could catch a train.

Made to wait: The public waiting for the train to arrive.

Service is also irregular during peak hours and commuters are forced to board the cramped trains.

Commuters are also unhappy over the frequent breakdown of ticket-vending machines and auto

    gates at the KTM stations.

Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) vice-president A. Balasubra-maniam, who made a few

trips on the Komuter train recently, described the service as poor, inefficient and unreliable.

Balasubramaniam said he had travelled on the train on several occasions last month and was not

    impressed with the service.

He said his car was in the workshop and he thought travelling on the Komuter from his office in Port

Klang to Kuala Lumpur for his appointments would be good.

However, on the first trip, I was made to wait for 90 minutes before the train arrived and I was la te

    for my appointment.

I first thought the delay was due to unavoidable circumstances. However, I was proven wrong when

I had to wait for more than 40 minutes before I got a train home from KL Sentral on the same day,

    he told StarMetro.

Balasubramaniam said he made two more trips from Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur and vice-versa

before deciding that he had seen enough of the Komuter.

He said he would not be travelling on the Komuter train anymore as the service caused more

inconvenience than using other modes of transport.

Thousands of people are relying on the Komuter to get to their office and I am sure they are facing

trouble in their office for going late to work every day, he said.

We have a lot of women, old people and children travelling on the t rains and I feel KTM must act

fast on improving the situation, he added.

Charlie Fernanxo, 55, from Seremban, said he was fed up with the KTM service.

Until two years ago, Charlie said, he was one of those who had been commuting on the train to work

    daily.

However, he said because of the poor service he has decided not to use the Komuter.

Recently, I tried commuting on the train and was shocked to find that the service had deteriorated.

I cannot accept this and decided that I would never travel on the Komuter train again, he said.

College student Raymond Heng said he had been using the service for more than two years from

Klang to his college in Bandar Sunway.

He said the waiting was unbearable and there was frequent disruption of service.

Sometimes, I am forced to wait longer than the 30 minutes due to the disruption, he said, adding

that the delay had resulted in a cramped and uncomfortable ride for commuters.

Awaluddin Sapian, 63, said the irregular service had forced him to reduce his trips to Klang from his

    house in Port Klang.

He said the long wait was unbearable, especially for old people like him.

Previously, there will be a train every 15 minutes but now you have to wait for more than 30

    minutes.

I hope KTM will do something to improve the service, he said.

George Emanuel, 45, of Subang Jaya, said the condition of the trains was far from desirable.

He said the compartments were in bad shape and rain water was entering through the gaps.

We even found cockroaches in the compartments, he added
