STATEMENT OF INQUIRY: Everything in the universe, including

us, is made of matter and elements are the building blocks of all matter. Discovering elements has helped scientists identify the things that everything in our universe has in common and the relationships we share. Discovering the benefits and harms of certain elements and compounds has helped us understand our universe and the way in which it works.

Matter

• The material that all objects and substances in the universe are made of.

• Anything that has massand takes up space.

Matter

• Some matter we can see – such as rocks, trees, bicycles, etc.

• Some matter we can’t see– dust mites, air, etc.

• Just because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean we don’t know it’s there.

Ice Cream Shops Matter!

• We can think of matter, elements, and atoms in terms of an ice cream shop.

• Matter would be everything! (The chairs, the bowls, the utensils, the scoops, etc.)

Matter = Everything in the ice cream shop

Elements of the Earth

• Although there are over 115 known elements only a few of them are most abundant within the major parts of our Earth.

• The major parts of the Earth include the Earth’s crust (the solid part), Earth’s oceans, living matter, and Earth’s atmosphere.

Elements in Earth’s Oceans

• Water that flows over Earth’s surface weather and erodes rocks and soil washes sediment into the ocean.

• Seventy percent of Earth’s surface is covered by water, and most of that water is the ocean.

• About 96.5% of the ocean is water (H2O).

• The other 3.5% is of dissolved substances.

• Of those dissolved substances, chlorine makes up 58.3% and sodium makes up 32.4%.

• Sodium Chlorine is table salt – this is why the ocean tastes salty.

• Living matter {plants and animals} are made mostly of oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen.

• Almost 75 percent of the human body is water.

• If all the water was removed, calcium would be most of the remaining mass – our skeletal system, bones and teeth.

• Although humans rely on oxygen in the air we breathe, most of the Earth’s atmosphere is Nitrogen –78%.

• Only 21% of the atmosphere is oxygen.

• CO2, a greenhouse gas, is also present in our atmosphere which causes the warming of our planet.
