Welcome Back
How glorious has it been to see the sun shining this week as we
returned to school. Whilst it has been a little cool, the rays of golden
sunshine have been glorious! A reminder that students are now to be
wearing summer uniform (although we understand that this week’s
temperatures brought out the long pants). They also need to wear a hat
each day throughout Term 4. Ice blocks are now available on
Wednesday’s for fifty cents. Students are also asked to wear sunscreen
to school and reapply throughout the day with the school supply.
Once in Upper Division, students are asked to provide their own supplies. This helps
them to learn about looking after their own equipment. Many of the students are
running very low on supplies. Students have been asked to take their pencil cases home
today to see what needs to be replenished. Many are missing glue sticks, rulers and
scissors, rubbers and sharpeners. Students should have some coloured pencils in their
cases as well as lead pencils and blue/black and red pens. The Upper Division students
have also been asked to provide their own headphones for computer work, in keeping with the Lower
Division class.
Please note some changes in dates on the term calendar at the end of the newsletter. School Photo Day
has been moved back a week to ensure that everybody will be here. The Young Cherry Chase has been
postponed until next year. There wasn’t enough interest this year in the School Sleepover, so it has been
postponed as well. Our Presentation Night will also need to be moved to another date, which is yet to be
determined. The TAFE Catering event, which our P&C does every year, is to be held on our old
Presentation Night date. This is a big money spinner for our P&C and we couldn’t knock it back.
Please find attached to this newsletter, a brochure about Learn to Swim. Term
4 is typically when students are busy with the very important swimming lessons.
We will have one week of Swimming Lessons as well, hopefully on the dates
that we have listed. We are still negotiating for a spot in the pool though, so
those dates may change. We will let you know as soon as possible.
There are a few big fundraising events happening this term, which are detailed
on the following page. We would love to see as many people as possible helping out with these events,
as the money raised goes towards assisting all of the students at our school. A big thanks to those who
baked, donated or helped out with the SAMI concert fundraiser during the holidays.
Milo T20 Cricket Day
Some of our students headed into Young on
Wednesday to take part in this annual cricket education
program. The program is run for students in Year 3-6,
however we had a couple of juniors join us as well. The
students were mixed with students from Young North,
Murrumburrah and Monteagle, to play modified games
of soccer. Students from Young High School umpired
the games and fun was had by all. The emphasis is on
participation, so everybody bats for 2 innings and
everybody bowls.
Adding to the festival atmosphere, there was music
playing throughout the day and fielders shaking their tail to the grooves was not uncommon. There was
even a dance competition at the end of the day. There was a high catch competition and free give-aways.
Green Eggs and Ham
The Lower Division class today were reading the classic Dr Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham. They had a
great time reading it together and completing activities relating to the book. They gathered some data
about how many students would eat ‘green eggs and ham’ and then tested that out with an experiment.
Mrs Mitchell produced some ‘green eggs’ and the kids got to peel them and eat them. The data results
were very different after conducting the experiment!
Masters Footy
We would like to wish our Dad’s and neighbours the
best of luck for their big footy weekend coming up
over the next two days. They will be putting their
bodies on the line for Murringo as they take to the
field with all of the other ‘oldies’. Best of luck
Murringo Mongrels and Murringo Dingoes!
Nice Poem Jack!
Earlier in the week, the Lower Division students learnt
about poetry. They wrote some acrostic poems and
we have included one from Jack Dowling here.
Our Place In The World
This term in Upper Division, the students are learning
about Australia’s place and role in the wider world. There
are three main parts to this unit—The United Nations, Our
Asian Neighbourhood, The Refugee Crisis.
To begin the unit, we asked the students to list the biggest
problems that they think are facing our world today.
Their thoughtful contributions and discussion showed that
they have already thought a lot about this topic. Check
out what they thought of below.
We then started looking at the United Nations
and focusing on the 17 Global Goals that have
been set as a ‘to do list’ for the world. Every
member nation is supposed to be taking action
to help achieve these goals.
These goals are supposed to be achieved by
2030. That is only 14 years away and actions
are already being taken.
We are spending time looking at each goal
individually. This week we have looked at Goals
1 through to 5.
We worked out how old we would all be in 2030 and the students were
shocked to realise that they would be in their 20’s. Solving these sorts
of problems is going to be the job of their generation, as well as ours,
and there is so much that they can do, even at their age. Knowing about
the goals and talking about the issues is just one of those things.
The students shared their hopes for the future of our world on our Twitter account. Here are some of
them.
Goal 1—No Poverty
On Monday we learnt about the problem of poverty around the world.
The kids were very shocked to hear that the worlds richest 80 people have
the same amount of wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion people! We
discussed the problems that poverty brings and why it happens. There are
enough resources on Earth for everybody, they just aren’t evenly shared.
Goal 5—Gender Equality
Tuesday was the International Day of the Girl, so we focused on Goal 5.
The students learnt about some of the issues facing women and girls around the world, as well as
fabulous things that are currently being done to improve the situation. They shared their thoughts and
hopes for the future on our Instagram account.
Each of the students has been
asked to choose one of the
Global Goals to research more,
as part of their homework. We
look forward to seeing what ideas they come up with for activism.
P&C News
There are a lot of events coming up which involve our P&C. We are often few in numbers, so we urge as
many families as possible to get involved with some or all of these events, as there is a wide variety.
Murringo Village Fair
This is going to be a big fundraiser. Our school is hosting a lot of stalls, and many families have already
replied with which stalls they would like to run. If you haven’t already returned that note (or need a new
one), please let us know.
We are looking for donations for our 2nd hand book, toy and clothes stall,
as well as our ‘bric-a-brac’ stall. There are boxes down in the big kitchen,
where you can place your donations throughout the term. Please consider
sending items in for any of these stalls over the coming weeks.
TAFE Breakfast Catering
We have been asked to cater a breakfast at TAFE on Friday 4th November.
We will need to be there by approximately 6.30am and the guests will arrive
at 7.30am and stay for an hour. There will probably be an hour of clean up
afterwards. If you are available to help on that morning, please let Gina in
the office know. There will be a note coming home soon about the event.
TAFE Presentation Night Catering
We cater this event every year, and it makes us a LOT of money. This year it will be held on Wednesday
the 7th of December at the TAFE campus. Please consider keeping this night aside so that we can have
lots of helpers.
New Sports Equipment
Check out this awesome new football goal that
arrived today! It was purchased with the funds
that were raised at previous Year 6 Fun Day fund-
raisers, organised by Jack Grant, Anna Dowling
and Michael Downer. It is already getting a
workout!
We will have a Yr 6 Fun Day again this year, so
look out for an exciting day to come.
Cooking Chaos!
A big thanks to our
wonderful helpers
who came in again
to help with the
cooking program.
Today we made
fresh pasta, a
vegetable pasta
sauce, breadsticks
and mandarade (a lemonade
with mandarins in it)
It was SOOOO delicious!
Please check out the cooking
dates on the calendar and
consider coming along if you
are available to help.
Primary Camp
Not long now until Primary Camp to Canberra. It is going to be a week full of educational tours and fun
with friends.
If you haven’t already paid for camp, please be sure to remember that you can pay it off in instalments or
in one lump sum.
The camp will cost
$300 per student,
after a generous do-
nation of $200 per
student from our
P&C.
We will include the
itinerary and the
packing list in next
week’s newsletter.
