Wednesday May 13, 2015 73 Flanders celebrating another silver lining YOUTH FOOTBALL: East Ham’s Flanders under-11s (right) will be able to enjoy their summer break after winning more silverware this season. Echo League Cup winners as under-nines and league champions as under-10s, they maintained their fine form with another cup final win. A fine all-round team display proved the key in a 2-1 success against final rivals Dagenham United Clarets, with Julius Sabo converting a cross from Brandon Andrews to spark wild scenes of celebration. And they rounded off their campaign with an emphatic 11-1 victory over EMH Merlins to clinch the runners-up spot in Division B. Manager and head coach Jeff Merrifield said: “The boys have done themselves proud, given the fact they’ve played three seasons and won two cups and a league title. “It has been a spectacular journey for the boys who are learning and adapting quickly. Hats off to the boys and their parents.” Coach Gary Andrews added: “The boys have shown they can dig in deep at the highest level while playing some attractive football.” Flanders are looking to add players and new coaches to all of their squads, ranging from under-seven to under-13, next season and anyone interested should contact Jeff Merrifield on 07709 758661. Keir Hardie crowned ‘Olympic’ champions Keir Hardie Primary are the Mini- Olympic champions of Newham after battling their way to victory in the first tournament of the summer term. A total of 11 schools took part in the event organised by the Cumberland School Sport Partnership as they competed in balance, speedbounce, target and hurdles. Each school was given a country to represent on the day and it was Keir Hardie, playing as Japan, who earned overall gold. The Canning Town school finished third in the balance, second in speedbounce, and first in both the target and hurdles to top the medal table. Scott Wilkie of Custom House were second, while representing Ghana, and third place went to Manor Park school Salisbury, who were flying the flag for Great Britain on the day. Finishing joint fourth were Ravenscroft (Jamaica) and Carpenters (Pakistan), Portway (Australia) were sixth, Kaizen (South Africa) seventh, Tollgate (China) eighth: Grange (USA), ninth, Hallsville (Germany) 10th and Britannia Village (Brazil) 11th. Year eight leaders from Cumberland School provided expert guidance. Meanwhile, 16 teams entered the year three/four mini tennis competition which took place on the outside courts at Cumberland School. And it proved to be a great day for Calverton School from Custom House. They entered an A and B team in the event and both booked their place in the semi-finals. There, the A team overcame Rosetta B 4-0, while the B team got the better of Portway 3-1 to join their schoolmates in the final. It was the A team who won the final, overcoming their classmates in style with a 4-0 win, while Portway A took third place after beating Rosetta 3-1. With leaders from Cumberland School assisting with officiating, there was plenty of exciting tennis on show. Other schools taking part were Britannia Village, Curwen, Hallsville, Drew and Salisbury. Echo League Cup winners as under-nines and league champions as under-10s, they maintained their fine form with another cup final win.
