Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Turriff United to Bellslea Park for our Breedon Aggregates Highland League Cup Quarter Final. We didn’t have a programme last week due to some technical problems but since my last programme notes we have had a couple of successful away cup games against Inverurie Loco Works in the Morrison Motors (Turriff) Aberdeenshire Shield and Lossiemouth in the Breedon Aggregates Highland League Cup. Add to that our victory over Strathspey Thistle last weekend and it has been a decent start to the New Year. The win on penalties at Inverurie sees us through to our second final of the season and one we are very much looking forward to. Our opponents in the Final will be Cove Rangers but we can worry about that later. Our emphatic victory at Lossiemouth sees us through to the quarter final here today against Turriff United. Prior to the Lossiemouth game we had lost our previous five League Cup ties, four of which were in our opening games in the competition. A very poor and disappointing record.

Everyone has been banging the drum about midweek games and the dislike for them but I think it’s fair to say that the League were justified in the decision to cram in the midweek games earlier in the season. Can you imagine the backlog of games there would be just now if John Grant hadn’t done that? It wasn’t his decision to do that as he was only following orders from the clubs but these same clubs need to be educating their supporters on that and not allow the abuse that the league secretary is getting on Social Media. I was shown a couple of articles in recent weeks from a Facebook site and the abuse that was being directed towards the league secretary and the office bearers was ridiculous.

I am not a fan of social media mainly because I don’t have the time to contribute and I don’t look at it unless somebody shows me something. There are a few guys on these sites that are poisonous and really haven’t a clue but again I say that the clubs need to do more to educate these muppets who think they know it all. The Highland League is a close knit community and the clubs know the people who are on these sites. I know who the Broch posters are but we are fortunate that we don’t have that many and the ones we do have seem to be on it for the right reasons. The majority of the contributors I have no doubt are decent guys who support their clubs and are level headed enough to form a sensible opinion but others are just trouble makers who hide behind daft names. I do the Twitter Feed for the Broch and that is a great tool for keeping up to date with what is going on in the league. I don’t know the guys who administer the Fitba North pages but they do a great job with the scores on a match day and everyone the league over has instant access to the scores as they happen. It’s a pity these things are spoilt by a few idiots. Back to the game today and I hope we can continue our good form of recent weeks and it is the Broch who progress to the Semi Final of the cup. A battling performance against Inverurie Locos in the Aberdeenshire Shield saw the guys progress to yet another final under your stewardship. How pleased were you with the performance? I thought the guys were excellent. I told them after the game that no other HFL side would have recovered like they did to going 3-2 down in extra time. The character they showed once again was exceptional and they fully deserve to play in another cup final. We dominated the first half against a very good Locos side. We then didn't turn up for the first 10 minutes of the second half but after that we pushed on again and managed to hold out nerve and win on penalties. You followed up the Locos result with a fine victory at Lossiemouth in what must have seemed one of the most comfortable wins as a manager. What were your thoughts on the game? The Lossiemouth game was a very pleasing performance which I felt we dominated from start to finish. I managed to change the team around a bit with players missing with injuries, illness and suspension. Aidan Combe came in to the starting 11 and did really well. He is the sort of player who can produce a bit of magic to change games. He scored the first goal and I don't think any other player on the pitch could have scored that goal as he beat two defenders and passed the ball in to the bottom corner. Stuart Taylor also came into the team at centre half and I think it was his best performance in a Broch shirt. He strolled through the game looked very comfortable. Paul Campbell then got his first goal for the club which I'm sure will help him kick on and then we scored two later on through an excellent Ryan Christie header and then another youngster came on in Cammy Buchan to score his first goal for us so overall extremely please with the performance. The Broch seem to be getting a name as a cup team, what do you put the progress in the cup competitions down to? I have always said that being labelled a cup team is a very good thing. A lot of other teams in this league would love to be in our position and have won one and be in another final. Many of them will not see any silverware at the end of the season so I do not see any negative about being a so called cup team. Yes we know ourselves that our league form has not been quite good enough, especially earlier on in the season at home. It was always going to take time for me to get the team operating how I want and hopefully we are starting to see that in recent games. I fully believe that our guys have more hunger and desire than a lot of other players and they simply do not give up. The passion and team spirit in our camp is second to none and I think this is why the Broch have been relatively successful over the last few years. Last week saw three points gathered in a fine 4-0 win over Strathspey Thistle. How did you view the game and how important is it to start climbing the table? I was happy with the win although it was nowhere near our finest performance of the season. It is always pleasing to keep a clean sheet and also to score four goals into the bargain. The win takes us above Buckie Thistle into seventh place and we want to keep pushing higher. Strathspey made us work very hard for the win and they are a vastly improved side.

They were missing a few players but they never gave up and kept trying to play football for the full 90 minutes. That said the win keeps our good recent run going and any time you win without playing your best is welcome. With all the bad weather that we’ve had over the past few weeks and games getting cancelled it can affect player’s consistency if they are playing one week then idle the next so I have got to be happy. Today sees another tough game against a top four side. How do you see the game going and will the two victories at The Haughs earlier in the season have any bearing on the game? If anything, our two previous victories could give Turriff an edge. I have no doubt they will come here with a point to prove and with this added to an already very good footballing side, then we know that if we are to get anything then the boys must perform. I think Ross Jack and his team up there do not get enough credit for what they have done. They pushed Brora further than anyone else did last season and again this year they have shown how hard of a team they are to beat. In fact they have the consistency that I crave. They do not get beat often as they have a very solid shape which is difficult to break down. They also have some very good players like Jamie Beagrie, Paul Young and Lewis Davidson who could walk in to any Highland League team, so we know that it will be a very tough game. Our last couple of wins over them were by one goal each time so we know that on the day the two teams are relatively well matched, but as results this term and last have shown, they are more consistent than us and as a result, finish higher in the league. I had a season and a bit up at Turriff and if anything, I actually played some of my best football there. They are a great club who have a very stable base in the form of their committee members and the guys who work tirelessly in the background. I shared some very good memories whilst there, including winning Turriff's first trophy in the HFL by beating Aberdeen in a final at Balmoor. In all a great club who deserve their place in our league, with some great people who work to make things happen. Special mention to Pearl, Ellis and all the crew for their work over the past few weeks. The fantastic effort they have shown of late has shown our league in a good light so well done guys from all at FFC. All the Best Mark.

Capacity: 2,500 (750 seated) Chairman: George Manson Manager: Ross Jack League: Scottish Highland Football League Turriff United Football Club are a senior football club currently playing in the Highland Football League in Scotland. They play their matches at The Haughs, beside the River Deveron in Turriff, Aberdeenshire. They joined the Highland League for the 2009-10 season, having been accepted into the league on 25 February 2009. Prior to joining the Highland League, they were a Scottish Junior Football Association club, playing in the Scottish Junior Football North Premier League. Turriff finished in the top half of the table only once in their first six seasons in the Highland League, but their fortunes improved significantly in the 2014-15 season. The club recovered from early-season setbacks (their heaviest-ever league defeat, 8-0 by defending champions Brora Rangers, followed by a three-point penalty for fielding an ineligible player in their opening match) to beat their previous record of 16 wins in a season with 14 matches still to play. Turriff went on to compile a 23-match unbeaten run, during which they briefly led the league table following a 1-0 win over Deveronvale F.C. on 3 January 2015, and again following a 3-0 victory over Huntly F.C. four weeks later. On both occasions the second-placed club, Brora Rangers, had two games in hand. Turriff remained Brora's closest rivals for the rest of the season, until Brora finally took the title with a 2-1 win over Turriff at The Haughs on 28 March. A week later, Turriff secured second place when a draw between their own closest rivals, Cove Rangers and Wick Academy, left both clubs unable to close the gap. The club made its Scottish Cup debut in 2012, beating Burntisland Shipyard, Civil Service Strollers and Buckie Thistle to reach the fourth round, in which a 1-1 draw at home to Greenock Morton made them the last surviving non-SFL/SPL side in the competition, before being knocked out in the replay. To date, they have maintained their 100% cup record against non-league opposition, but have yet to win against a club from the top four divisions. In 2013-14, Turriff reached the third round, beating Selkirk and Wick Academy before going out to Stirling Albion. In 2014-15 they beat Lossiemouth in the first round, before losing to Clyde in the second. By virtue of finishing as runners up in the Highland League, they will enter the competition in the second round in 2015-16. Turriff's most consistent success as a senior club has been in the Aberdeenshire Shield competition, which they have won three times. During the 2013-14 competition, they were involved in an unusual incident when their semi-final match against Cove Rangers F.C. was declared void and ordered to be replayed after it emerged that both teams had fielded ineligible players (in Turriff's case, the player was an unused substitute). The decision was to Turriff's advantage, as they had lost the original match but went on to win the replay and so reach the final for the second year running. In 2015, they again beat Cove Rangers in the semi-final to become finalists three years in a row.

Turriff united FC player profiles Kevin Main Goalkeeper signed recently from Buckie Thistle after playing over 400 games for the Jags. Made his debut in Turriff’s Scottish Cup tie against SPFL boys Clyde and will no doubt prove to be a big asset to United Lewis Davidson One of the younger players in the squad, signed from Peterhead a couple of seasons past. Had a spell at Aberdeen and will be an excellent addition to the team. Plays in midfield and works well alongside Paul Young Stuart Cumming Former Blackburn Rovers Reserve Players arrives with a wealth of experience. Since his release from Blackburn he has turned out for Montrose, Elgin, Buckie and laterally Formartine. Commanding centre half who reads the game well Cammy Bowden Another product of the Peterhead youth system. Solid defender who never shirks a tackle. Signed in June 2010 and has been a first team regular ever since. Still only a youngster and has a great future ahead of him. Been plagued by injury during his spell at Turriff, but has shown glimpses of his pace and eye for goal in games he has played. Match Report Vs Inverurie Loco Works Morrison Motors (Turriff) Aberdeenshire Shield Semi Final, Tuesday 2nd February 2016, Inverurie Loco Works v Fraserburgh, Harlaw Park, Inverurie Broch struck late to force penalties and club legend Willie West scored the winning penalty to send the visitors berserk. Mark Cowie admitted that it could be one of the best games in his short managerial career so far describing it as “Brilliant for the neutrals”. Mark was obviously delighted and never felt like his side were going to be beaten at all. Fraserburgh opened the scoring mid-way through the first half through West, the goal was cancelled out seconds into the second half through a lovely low drive from John Maitland. Locos took the lead minutes after when Andy Hunter tapped in from close range. Midway through the second half, Ryan Cowie did the unthinkable and scored directly from a corner which forced extra time. Ryan Christie and Stephen Jeffrey were then ordered off minutes before half time of extra time because of a little pushing and shoving, Hunter from the resulting free kick found the top corner and send Locos in front. In the last minute of extra time Graham Johnston’s 40 yard free kick was driven low and rebounded off Maitland and into his own net to force the penalties. One Barbour save and one complete miss from Selfridge was enough to put the Broch in the Aberdeenshire Shield Semi-final. The opening stages were very cagey with neither side creating many chances despite the visitors being on top slightly. The deadlock was broken mid-way through the first half when Dean Cowie corner met the head of West who headed goal bound and had enough on it to just put it over the line. Inverurie came out for the second half like a cat catching a mouse as seconds into the half they equalised after Hunter played the ball through to Maitland who took a touch to control and fired low under Barbour from the edge of the box. It didn’t take long for the home side to edge in front as Jeffrey got a flick on the Neil Mclean corner which landed right at Hunter’s feet who tapped it in from close range putting Locos ahead for the first time in the match. Neither side created much after the goal until the Broch equalised mid-way through the second half when R Cowie beat Keirin McCaffrey at his near post directly from the corner which sent the game into extra time. On the brink of half time of extra time lots of pushing and shoving occurred after a free kick was given to Locos which resulted in both Ryan Christie of Fraserburgh and Stephen Jeffrey of Inverurie being ordered off by referee Scott Leslie. From that resulting free kick Hunter found the top corner from 20 yards giving the home side the advantage in extra time. Despite the eight yellow cards in extra time the Broch equalised in the 120th minute after Johnston hit a driven free kick from 45 yards which took a massive deflection off of Locos forward Maitland leaving the keeper wrong footed and the ball trickled in for the Broch equaliser making sure it was going to the dreaded penalties. The first three pens were scored convincingly the fourth from substitute Paul Campbell just made it in the net after McCaffrey getting a strong hand behind it but not enough to stop it from hitting the wood work and find the net. Barbour then saved to his left to deny Ryan Keir and give the visitor the advantage, they couldn’t capitalise on it as Cooper fired over. Both Mclean and Hay finished calmly. Michael Selfridge stepped up to take Loco’s fifth pen but fired horribly over, this gave West the opportunity to win it and did so firing into the top right corner send Fraserburgh to the final. Fraserburgh may have 2 or 3 suspended as a result of the numerous yellow cards shown through out. Saturday 30th January 2016 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Inverurie Loco Works 6 Rothes 0 Inverurie laid down a warning in the opening minutes as Neil McLean came close with a low shot that was blocked, with the captain also missing an effort on the rebound. The deadlock was broken in the 11th minute as Locos piled on the pressure through a lofted McLean free-kick into the box. As Rothes failed to clear the danger, Martin Laing provided the perfect pass to find Michael Selfridge lurking in the six-yard-box to tap the ball into the net. As half-time approached, Inverurie produced the perfect counter attacking move to go two goals clear of their opponents. Marc Young moved forward from his right-back position to work his way down the wing before crossing deep to find left-back Gordon Forsyth at the back post. Rising above the Rothes defence, Forsyth's powerful header back across goal wrong-footed Mackie, giving the keeper no chance to get a hand on the effort. Inverurie quickly put the game beyond doubt as they scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half. Captain McLean led from the front as he scored yet another memorable goal at Harlaw Park when he picked the ball up outside the box. With three players between himself and the goal, McLean set about beating each one with brilliant footwork before curling the ball low past Mackie. Inverurie got their fourth of the match as Laing advanced down the right wing, allowing Selfridge to find some space in the box to convert the low cross from six yards out. Although the result was no longer in doubt, Inverurie had to play the remainder of the match with 10 men as Scott Begg received a straight red card for a late foul on Scott Davidson. This did not seem to hamper the home side too much as Hunter finally saw a reward for his effort in the game as he advanced along the edge of the box, before scoring with a low shot. Rothes were then reduced to 10 men as Nathan Smith was sent off following a foul on John Maitland, which resulted in a penalty. Selfridge scored the spot-kick to clinch his hat-trick by wrong footing Mackie by placing the ball in the bottom left corner. Tuesday 2nd February 2016 Morrison Motors (Turriff) Aberdeenshire Shield Semi Final Inverurie Loco Works 3 Fraserburgh 3 (Fraserburgh won 4-3 on pens) The deadlock was broken midway through the first half when Dean Cowie’s corner met the head of West who headed goal bound and it had just enough on it to squeeze over the goal line. Inverurie came roaring out of the blocks for the second half and soon equalised after Hunter played the ball through to Maitland, who took a touch to control and fired low under Barbour from the edge of the box. It didn’t take long for the home side to edge in front as Jeffrey got a flick on a Neil Mclean corner and it landed right at Hunter’s feet, who tapped it in from close range to put Locos ahead for the first time in the match. Neither side created much after the goal until the Broch equalised midway through the second half when Ryan Cowie beat Kieran McCaffrey at his near post directly from a corner to send the game into extra time. On the brink of half time of extra time lots of pushing and shoving occurred after a free kick was given to Locos, which resulted in both Ryan Christie of Fraserburgh and Stephen Jeffrey of Inverurie being ordered off by referee Scott Leslie. From the resulting free kick Hunter found the top corner from 20 yards to give the home side the advantage in extra time. Broch equalised in the 120th minute after Johnston’s driven

free kick from 45 yards took a massive deflection off of Locos forward Maitland, wrong-footed the keeper and trickled in for the equaliser to send the tie to penalties. The first three pens were scored convincingly, with the fourth from substitute Paul Campbell just making it into the net after McCaffrey got a strong hand behind it but not enough to stop it from hitting the wood work and find the net. Barbour then saved to his left to deny Ryan Keir and give the visitors the advantage, but they couldn’t capitalise on it as Courtney Cooper then fired over the bar. Both Mclean and Hay finished calmly, then Michael Selfridge stepped up to take Loco’s fifth pen but fired horribly over, giving West the opportunity to win it and he did so, firing into the top right corner to send Fraserburgh through to the final. Saturday 6th February 2016 Breedon Aggregates Highland League Cup 1st Round Brora Rangers 4-1 Inverurie Loco Works Brora overcame some stubborn Locos resistance to advance to the quarter-finals of the Highland League Cup. Locos’ cause wasn’t helped when they were forced into two first half changes through injury, Ryan Robertson replacing Marc Young and Joe McCabe coming on for Martin Bavidge. The home side finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with a goal from Dale Gillespie. Locos hit straight back after the break, Andy Hunter firing them level in the 47th minute. Andrew Greig put Brora back in front eight minutes later and a header from Zander Sutherland made it three in the 72nd minute. Substitute John Macleod completed the scoring two minutes from time, tapping home a cross from Sutherland. Buckie Thistle 1-3 Formartine United Three first half goals saw Formartine past Buckie Thistle at Victoria Park. United opened the scoring after 13 minutes, Andy Reid’s goal kick finding Garry Wood, who turned well and fired past Ross Salmon. Fourteen minutes later it was two when Scott Barbour got down the left flank and his cross was placed into the top right-hand corner by Stuart Smith. Wood put the game beyond Buckie with his second and Formartine’s third just before the break, latching onto Graeme Rodger’s through ball and slotting home under Salmon. Buckie brought on Andy Low for Jamie Fraser as they looked for a way back into the match and they did grab a goal back twenty minutes from time, Chris Angus rifling the ball past Reid after the visitors failed to clear. Clachnacuddin 7-0 Strathspey Thistle A hat-trick from Ian Penwright helped Clach to a crushing win over Strathspey Thistle in Inverness. Ryan Ingram returned for the home side and made an instant impact when he opened the scoring after just seven minutes. The Grantown Jags had Gary Kerr sent off after just 17 minutes and were up against it from then on. Penwright grabbed his first of the day in the 25th minute and thirteen minutes later Daniel Maclennan made it three. Right on half time Penwright fired home his second and Clach’s fourth to surely put the tie beyond Strathspey. Penwright completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute and five minutes later Fraser Robertson scored number six. Youngster Liam Shewan rounded off the scoring with the home side’s seventh goal eighteen minutes from the end. Cove Rangers 4-3 Wick Academy Cove edged past Wick Academy in a repeat of last year’s final, coming out on top in a seven-goal thriller at Harlaw Park. Top scorer Daryl Nicol put the Aberdeen side ahead in the 32nd minute, only for Wick to equalise through Sam Mackay just before the break. Nicol struck again with his



second goal three minutes after the break, but the visitors were soon level when Darryn Kelly put the ball into his own net. Wick went in front for the first time three minutes later, Ross Allan marking his return from long-term injury with a fine strike. Cove front man Johnny Smith then took a hand in things, striking twice in a three-minute spell to turn the game on its head and give Cove the lead for a third and decisive time. Nicol blotted his copybook with a straight red card in injury time, but Cove held on to progress to the next round. Lossiemouth 0-4 Fraserburgh Fraserburgh eased past Lossiemouth at Grant Park to record yet another cup win. The Broch finally made their early pressure tell when they took the lead through a fine individual goal from Aidan Combe in the 32nd minute. Darren McConnachie produced some excellent stops to keep the home side in the tie, but the visitors did get their second through Paul Campbell when he scored from the penalty spot after being fouled by Scott Gordon in the box. Ryan Christie rifled home number three from a free kick in the 85th minute to seal the win for Fraserburgh and substitute Cameron Buchan got the fourth goal, finishing well to round off the scoring on full-time. Nairn County 2-1 Keith Two excellent goals from Conor Gethins and Alan Pollock gave Nairn victory over Keith and sent them through to the quarter-finals of the Highland League Cup. Gethins put the home side in front in the 25th minute, bringing the ball down 20 yards out, turning well and chipping the ball over Daniel Bell into the net. Keith responded instantly and equalised when Nairn failed to clear from a corner and Luke Barbour bundled the ball home at the near post. Pollock put Nairn back in front in the 34th minute, the County midfielder crashing a superb strike beyond Bell from 22 yards. Barbour and Craig Cormack missed good chances to level for Keith in the second half and Pollock almost grabbed his second when he smashed an effort off the crossbar from outside the box. Nairn held on to progress to a meeting with Clach at Grant Street in the next round. Turriff United 2-0 Huntly Turriff advanced to the quarter-finals of the Highland League Cup with a comfortable win over Huntly at The Haughs. Lewis Davidson gave Turriff an excellent start when he slotted the ball past Stuart Grant in the sixth minute to give the home side the lead. Huntly lost Murray McCulloch to injury in the first half and he was replaced by Adam McNamee. The rest of the half was a scrappy affair with neither side able to create many clear-cut chances. It was fellow defender Chris Herd who sealed United’s passage into the next round, converting from close range after a goalmouth scramble. Huntly did their best to find a way back into the match, but Turriff defended stoutly and saw the game out to win comfortably in the end. Saturday 13th February 2016 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Lossiemouth 1 Deveronvale 0 Lossiemouth met Deveronvale at Grant Park in the only Highland League match to beat the frosty conditions, and it was The Coasters who came out on top by a single goal with Vale having two men sent off in the second half. A scrappy first period saw both sides struggle to create any clear-cut chances, with Martin Charlesworth missing a good chance for Vale and Ryan Farquhar heading wide when well placed. Wednesday 17th February 2016 Morrison Motors (Turriff) Aberdeenshire Shield Semi Final Formartine United 1 Cove Rangers 4 Cove Rangers blew away Formartine United with a four goal salvo after the break at North Lodge Park. The visitors took the lead on 53 minutes thanks to Jonny Smith’s finish and the same player added a second a minute later. Eric Watson’s own goal on 66 minutes gave the home side some hope but Jonny Smith completed his hat trick on 75 minutes and Daryl Nicol completed the scoring on 83 minutes to send Cove Rangers through to the final where they will meet Fraserburgh later in the season. Highland League News Josh Peters has signed for Hibs until the end of the season. The 19-year-old striker has left Strathspey to join the Edinburgh club's development squad. Peters had previously spent time training with Hibs and had also attracted interest from Hamilton. Huntly FC have announced that two players have been put up for sale, goalkeeper Fraser Hobday and winger Felipe Da Silva. Co-Manager Mark Gray explained the decision following the Highland League Cup first round defeat to Turriff United but admitted that they have received some news regarding another goalkeeper. “Fraser’s been transfer listed at his own request. We’ve sat down with the player and spoke about it all week and these things happen and we have to deal with it and move on. We do have other options just now. Andrew Pennycook continues his comeback from an arm break and will play in the under 20s on Monday night so we’ll have competition for the goalkeeping spot. He’s started doing proper goalkeeping exercises and his arm seems to be ok.” Felipe Da Silva (19) signed for the club in July after impressing during pre-season and has made 10 squad appearances for the black and golds. Fraserburgh FC Supporters Club News We welcome everyone from Turriff to the Bellslea for today’s Breedon Aggregates Highland League Cup Quarter Final match. Turriff have had a good season to date and last Saturday they won on their travels to Nairn County by 2 goals to 1. At present they are in 4th place in the league with 52 points from 24 games played. We had no corresponding fixture last season as we were knocked out of the competition by Wick Academy in the 1st round. The Inverurie Locos Aberdeenshire Shield Semi Final was a fabulous advert for Highland League football with excitement from start to finish. The Broch did brilliantly to come back twice from being behind to eventually win the game by 4 goals to 3 on penalties after extra time. We will now play Cove Rangers in the final with the date and venue still to be decided. We followed that game with a comfortable 4 nil victory away at Lossiemouth in the Highland League Cup. Congratulations to both Paul Campbell and Cameron Buchan who both scored their first goals for the Broch in the Lossie game. Last Saturday we were at home to Strathspey Thistle and controlled the game from start to finish, the final score of 4 goals to nil could have been greater. We hope to attract new members to the supporters club as we have kept our membership and bus prices at the same cost as last year. Player News Marc Lawrence's loan period at the Broch has ended. We would like to express our thanks to Peterhead FC for allowing Marc the opportunity to come to Bellslea Park and hope that his spell here has benefited both him and the club. Marc's time at the Broch has certainly been good for us and he scored seven goals in his 25 appearances. Four of those goals came in the William Hill Scottish Cup, scoring in all three rounds. The one at Falkirk to equalise with 20 minutes to go was a special moment. Yes, we eventually lost the game but to seeing that goal go in, and in front of the traveling support, will live long in the memory. Marc is one of the nicest lads you will ever meet and is someone who you genuinely hope succeeds in the game. It was a pleasure to have him at the club and we wish him the best of luck in the future both on and off the park. Match report vs. lossiemouth Breedon Aggregates Scottish Highland Football League Cup 1st Round, Saturday 6th February 2016, Lossiemouth v Fraserburgh, Grant Park, Lossiemouth Both teams looked busy in the early stages with Lossie comes close from a free kick which was cleared by the Broch defence and then at the other end Paul Campbell had a shot saved by Darren McConnachie. The home side had a great chance to take the lead on 16 minutes when Shawn Scott played the ball through to Ross Archibald but Joe Barbour did well to block the striker’s shot. A minute later and Michael Rae did well to find Dean Cowie who created space but could only drag his shot wide of the post. Midway through the half a cross by Joao Rodrigues from the right wing found Shawn Scott in the box but Barbour was on hand to save easily. The Broch were beginning to up the tempo and Marc Dickson found Campbell on the right and his cross was met by Aidan Combe but the effort was deflected over. From the corner taken by Graham Johnston, Dean Cowie saw his header saved. Just after the half hour a ball into the channel found Campbell in space and he tried a shot from an acute angle which was well saved by McConnachie. A minute later and the Broch took the lead thanks to some individual skill by Combe. Ryan Christie found the midfielder just outside the box and the young Broch star skipped past three defenders with some nifty close control and passed the ball into the bottom corner to the delight of the Broch travelling support. On 34 minutes Dickson went on one of his lung bursting runs down the right and crossed for Campbell who shot on the turn but once again the home keeper was equal to the challenge. At the other end Andrew Stewart tried his luck from 20 yards out but his effort just rose over the bar. The Broch were looking for a second just before the break and Ryan Cowie played a ball in behind the Lossie defence to Campbell who saw yet another effort saved. Right on the half time whistle Ryan Cowie was again in the action this time linking with Johnston who laid the ball off to Rae and the former Maud player saw his shot go just wide of the post. Normal service was resumed after the break when a dangerous corner by Ryan Cowie went through the six yard box just evading the reach of Campbell who was sniffing his first goal for the Broch. Another Broch corner this time from the opposite flank saw Johnston pick out Dean Cowie but the midfielder’s effort was well saved by McConnachie. After a couple of Lossie changes the Broch forced another corner on the hour mark which Ryan Cowie fired into the box only to see his brother Dean’s effort blocked by the keeper at the near post. That second goal wasn’t coming despite plenty off efforts by the visitors and when Dickson was tripped outside the box Ryan Cowie saw his dipping shot tipped over by McConnachie. When the second goal did arrive it came from the spot after Campbell was felled by Scott Gordon and the former Maud striker dusted himself down to send the keeper the wrong way to net his first goal in a black and white shirt. The Broch were now in full control and Campbell and Dean Cowie combined to create another chance for the striker who saw his effort cannon off the bar before putting the rebound over. A third goal was inevitable and it arrived on 85 minutes when Ryan Cowie’s free kick into the box was bulleted home by the head of Christie from 10 yards out. Right on 90 minutes Steven Davidson and Campbell combined to set up Cameron Buchan breaking into the box and he finished in style weeping the ball into the net from 8 yards out. The music scene had changed and glam rock was in fashion with Garry Glitter, Alvin Stardust and Status Quo hitting the charts. Flair trousers, kipper ties and platform shoes were all the rage. Everybody wore a three piece suit to the dance on a Saturday night. Local lad Brian Newlands signed for Peterhead from Arbroath and boy did he get some stick from his mates. Newlands and Peterhead just didn’t have the right ring to it. At the Bellslea youth was being given a fling. In a blaze of glory a young 16 year old school boy by the name of David McKenzie broke into the team. He had spindly legs and was in need of a hair cut but boy could he play. It was unusual for a young lad not to play amateur or junior football for a year or two but he was that good. Another promising player was Brian McCombie who was also still at school. The bus taking the team to games would leave Bellslea and sit outside the Academy waiting for the schoolboys to finish their game before heading on to where the Broch would be playing that day. With goalkeeper Elrick gone, Spicy (Bobby Forsyth) was back in between the sticks (again!!!). The first league game of the season ended in a 5-3 defeat at Clach with Rexie Hunter scoring two of the Broch’s goals. Next up was the 1st leg of the League Cup at Huntly which saw a 2-1 win for the Broch with Hunter scoring again along with Ally Fordyce. Another defeat in the league this time at home to Keith 0-2 followed before the second leg with Huntly at Bellslea ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to Kenny Roger’s 25 yard free kick.

The Broch picked up their first point of the season with a 2-2 draw at home to Forres mechanics with Hunter scoring a brace. Next was an exciting League Cup Quarter Final against Deveronvale which ended in a 5-4 victory for the visitors. Jimmy Milne put the Broch 1-0 up in 5 minutes but a Robertson double put Vale 2-1 ahead. Ally Fordyce equalised for the Broch before the break but Millar scored twice for Vale after the break to make it 4-2. Rex Hunter gave the home side some hope with a third for Broch but Millar completed his hat-trick on 80 minutes to make it 5-3. Brain McCann then scored the goal of the game taking on the whole Vale defence before slipping the ball past the keeper but it wasn’t enough to force a replay. The Broch then suffered two heavy defeats in the League 5-0 at Elgin City and 6-1 at home to Brora rangers with Brian McCann scoring for the Black and Whites. The first League win of the season followed though with Nairn County thumped on their own ground 4-1 thanks to Ally Fordyce’s double and singles from Jimmy Noble and Rex Hunter. The Broch’s hopes of a Qualifying Cup run were extinguished at the first stage with Ross County running out comfortable winners by 4 goals to 1, Hunter scoring the Broch’s goal. The League form was picking up slightly though with a 2-2 draw at home to Inverness Thistle, Jimmy Noble and Rex Hunter scoring followed by a 4-2 win at the Bellslea against Lossiemouth which saw Kenny Roger, John “Towsie” Duthie, Rex Hunter and George Bruce all netting for the Broch. Three successive 2-0 defeats followed though at the hands (or feet) of Ross County, Caledonian & Huntly before tragedy struck on Saturday 31st October at Buckie. George Malley who had come on as a substitute clashed with home keeper Simpson and broke his leg. At that time only one substitute was allowed but the 10 men rescued a point thanks to Rex Hunter’s second goal of the game late on to level the score at 2-2. Back in those days a few of us would meet in the Station Hotel lounge to discuss the day’s results of the teams we followed. When big Dod Bruce came in and told us about George Malley’s broken leg we wondered where he was as he was taken to hospital whilst the rest of the team came home. As not a lot of people had phones in those days we went round to tell his parents what had happened. It turned out that George spent 11 days at Dr Grays in Elgin before being released. The team at Buckie that day was – Forsyth, Roger, Sim, Duthie, Milne, Bruce, McKenzie, Noble, Fordyce, Hunter, Bisset. Sub: Malley. The injury to Malley who was the second Broch player to have broken his leg after William “Baxter” Ritchie at Elgin seemed to throw the Broch as they went on a run of 5 league defeats – 2-0 at home to Vale, 2-1 at Keith, 3-0 at home against Ross County and 2-1 at home to Huntly. By far the worst though was a 10-2 thumping at Rothes which was an unbelievable result. Worse than that though was the fact that Peterhead were sniffing around the Broch players. Rexie Hunter and Doug Milne were their targets and a bizarre transfer then took place. Peterhead were apparently going to offer £400 for them both, but according to reports the Broch jumped the gun and said they wouldn’t let them go for less than £250 so Peterhead said deal and saved themselves £150. On the field the Broch managed to steady the ship with their second 4-1 victory of the season against Nairn County with Ally Fordyce, John “Towsie” Duthie, Kenny Roger and new signing Bert Innes scoring. That was followed by a 3-3 draw at home to Buckie Thistle with Kenny Roger netting a brace.


It was about this time that schools football was taking off in the Broch. The Academy team lifted everything they entered with players like – 1. Ritchie Burnett 2. J. Crawford 3. S. Crawford 4. D. McKenzie 5. J. Anderson 6. R Hutcheson 7. R. Fraser 8. B. McCombie 9. I. Sharp 10. A. Sim 11. J. Stephen Six of that team went on to play for the Broch and even the amateur league was strong at that time. There were no pub names for sponsorship back then. It cost the players 31 to get a game and that was for washing the strip and paying the referee. These were the names of the teams at that time. Next for the Broch was the home derby against Peterhead which saw Hunter & Milne return to the Bellslea. It was a typical Broch v Peterhead match, all blood and thunder. Bert Innes was showing up well and thought he had scored only for the flag to go up for offside. Jimmy Noble did net the winner though with 10 minutes to go at the clinic end which sent the crowd wild with delight. The teams were- Broch: Forsyth, Whyte, G. Noble, Duthie, McCann, Bruce, Roger, J. Noble, Fordyce, Innes, McKenzie. Peterhead: Connell, Duthie, Ross, McKen, Anderson, Milne, Hunter, Christie, Third, Newlands, Morris. Ref: W.D. Reid, Aberdeen. There was only one player in the Peterhead line up that day who was actually from Peterhead. The police were kept busy and they went into the crowd to interview supporters about a few cans (empty of course) that had landed on the pitch, while off it someone was being interviewed about putting the matchball into the boot of his car!! The following week saw the return game at Recreation Park. Could the Broch do the double, which they hadn’t done for a while? It was looking good when Kenny Roger put them 1-0 up in 8 minutes and then a shot by big Dod Bruce beat keeper Connell but stuck in the mud on the line before being cleared. The Broch were still looking good until Newlands struck with two headers on 53 & 77 minutes for Peterhead and two late strikes by Hunter and Ross on 88 & 89 minutes sealed the win for the Bloo Toon. Final score 4-1. When Newlands scored he raced up the park with his arms aloft and then smiled at all the Brochers with his fist clenched. The same day news was filtering through about the Ibrox disaster where 66 people lost their lives. Things like that put football and life into perspective. The match was the first of 5 away games on the trot. A week later jimmy Noble and Bert Innes scored in a 2-0 victory at Banff against Deveronvale and Bert Innes scored against Forres Mechanics but that couldn’t prevent the Broch slipping to a 2-1 defeat. A 3-1 win at Lossiemouth saw goals from Kenny Roger, Ally Fordyce and Jimmy Noble but the Broch’s inconsistency returned a week later in a 3-1 defeat at Inverness Thistle with Jimmy Noble scoring. Finally a home game against Elgin City on 6th February which saw another new goalkeeper, Andy Beattie, appear for the club but he couldn’t save the Broch from another 3-1 defeat with Kenny Roger on the scoresheet for the home side. The next team to visit the Bellslea was Rothes and the home side got a measure of revenge for the 10-2 mauling earlier in the season with a hard fought 4-3 win. Jimmy Noble and Ally Fordyce both scored doubles in what would turn out to be the last victory of the season. The last chance of silverware was an away tie against Keith in the Aberdeenshire Cup but 1 goal was enough for the Maroons to win the tie. The season then petered out with a 3-1 defeat at Caley with Dave McKenzie scoring, a 1-1 draw at Brora Rangers thanks to Dod Bruce’s counter. That left the final game at home to Clach on 3rd April which ended in another 1-0 defeat to see the Broch finish in 12th place with 20 points from 30 games. Caley won the title with Inverness Thistle second having scored 155 goals 23 more than Caley. Buckie Thistle finished bottom of the League conceding a whopping 120 goals two more than Rothes who finished three points above them.


Marc Dickson, Defender, Age 28: Peterhead lad, Marc is one of the most senior players at the club now. He is regarded as one of the best full back/defensive midfield players in the league with his ball winning and passing ability. His lung bursting runs down the wing create lots of chances for his teammates and he pops up with the odd goal as well. Marc has now made over 350 appearances for the club. Appearances: 358; Goals: 15 Courtney Cooper, Defender, Age 21: Courtney burst into the 1st team five seasons ago making his debut at Rothes and hasn’t looked back. He can play at full back or in midfield, composed on the ball & a good passer. Courtney’s opportunities have been limited this season due to work commitments but he has scored some crucial goals for the club and clocked up over 150 appearances. Appearances: 158; Goals: 26 Brian Hay, Defender, Age 26: Another young Broch loon who has become an invaluable member of the first team. Bryan is still relatively young but is very assured on the ball and calm under pressure and has the pace to keep up with most forwards. Been with the club for 9 years and has amassed over 250 appearances and notched his 11th goal against Turriff in the League match this season. Appearances: 282; Goals: 11 Ryan Cowie, Defender, Age 24: Ryan has been with the club for three seasons now having been signed from Turriff United. He is the younger brother of Mark and Dean Cowie and has a bright future ahead of him. He can play wide on either flank but more often turns out at left full back. His delivery from the left and from corners and free kicks cause many dangerous situations for opponents and led to the winner against Turriff in the Scottish Cup tie this season. Appearances: 130; Goals: 11 Stuart Taylor, Defender, Age 22: One of Mark Cowie’s close season signings Stuart has previously played for Peterhead and Turriff United. Mainly operates as a right back although he can play at centre half as well. Stuart has already impressed with his defensive qualities and sure to feature prominently in the first team this season having started the last two games at Inverurie & Lossiemouth.

Joe Barbour, Goalkeeper, Age 22: Joe is a local loon with a lot of promise. He has made several first team appearances and has also been loaned out at Junior level to gain valuable experience. He played an integral part in winning the Aberdeenshire Cup in the last two seasons and has now taken over No.1 spot at the club in his own right. Appearances: 35 Edward Flinn, Goalkeeper, Age 17 A young goalkeeper who joined the club last season having been on the books at St. Johnstone. Ed has featured mainly at U20 level this season and made his 1st team debut as a replacement for Joe Barbour in the recent Highland League match against Formartine United. Appearances: 1 Paul Leask, Goalkeeper, Age 26: This is Paul’s seventh season with the club taking over the No 1 shirt when Billy Gordon retired. Has now made over 200 appearances for the club and is an excellent shot stopper. Signed from Peterhead Paul was the Players Player of the Year in 2011. Out injured all of last season but back to his best in his 5 appearances this season. Appearances: 218 Cameron Buchan, Defender, Age 20: Cammy is in a similar position to Joe having made several first team appearances but mostly loaned out to Juniors clubs. He is very composed on the ball and good in the air and is an excellent dead ball taker. Scored his first senior goal for the club against Lossiemouth in the League Cup last week. Appearances: 20; Goals: 1 Russell McBride, Defender/Striker, Age 37: Signed for the Broch 19 years ago but spent two seasons at Elgin City between that time. As club captain Russell is a great leader and one who the younger lads look up to. A tough tackling defender Russell is also very skilful and chips in with the odd goal at set pieces. Has now clocked up over 550 appearances and lifted the Aberdeenshire Cup at Christie Park this season where he was name man of the match. Appearances: 557; Goals: 93 Ryan Christie, Defender, Age 30: Ryan rejoined the club when Kris Hunter took over as manager and brings a wealth of experience and skill to the centre of defence/midfield. He suffered a serious injury two seasons ago and slowly made his way back to fitness playing twelve times last season. His thunderbolt against Inverurie Locos put the Broch on their way to victory in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final this season. Appearances: 273; Goals: 37


Fraserburgh fc player profiles

William West, Midfielder, Age 28: Willie is an assured midfield player with an eye for goal having notched 17 last season from an advanced role behind the strikers. He is another player who despite his young age has amassed over 400 appearances for the club. He has also scored over 100 goals for the club during that time. He has a great range of passing and is excellent in the air can also adapt to a defensive role as he has done in recent games. Appearances: 416; Goals: 113 Dean Cowie, Midfielder, Age 28: Experienced campaigner Dean has rejoined the club after three seasons with Peterhead the last of which was blighted by injury. Dean has a great array of passes and his all action, combative style and experience will be vital as the Broch look to challenge for more honours. On his day there is no better midfielder in the Highland League. Appearances: 51; Goals: 8 Graham Johnston, Forward, Age 29: Graham played for Scotland Schoolboys and has the capability to play in any position. One of the Broch’s and the Highland League’s best players on his day. Graham is the leading scorer at the club and has a happy knack of notching vital goals just like his double in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final victory over Buckie Thistle last season. He is one of the Broch’s main threats from set pieces setting up Steven Davidson’s clincher against Locos in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final. Appearances: 417; Goals: 156 Grant Noble, Forward, Age 28: Former Deveronvale and Turriff United player Grant joined towards the tail end 2012/3 season. Despite injury problems he featured on a regular basis last season scoring 3 times. He will be remembered for the vital winner against Montrose in the Scottish Cup two years ago. Grant has played a prominent role in the Broch’s fine start to the season scoring a belter at Turriff in the Highland League match. Appearances: 80; Goals: 13 Michael Rae, Midfielder, Age 27: Michael has rejoined the club from Maud Juniors recently having been at Fraserburgh as a youth. He has been instrumental in Maud’s challenge for honours in recent season and will bring experience and energy to the Broch side having captained the juniors at Maud. Made a scoring debut against Rothes in his second spell with the club. Appearances: 16; Goals: 1 Steven Davidson, Forward, Age 21: Steven actually made his debut against Nairn four seasons ago scoring in that game. He was farmed out to the Juniors to continue his development. Scored eight

times last season from 27 appearances, he is good in the air and has a great shot on him as he has demonstrated notching several important goals none more so that the second goal in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final this season. Scored his first hat-trick for the club against Rothes in the Highland League match. Appearances: 77; Goals: 17 Aidan Combe, Forward, Age 18: Joined the club last summer having previously played for Keith at under 17 level. It was during a match against the Broch where he came to the club’s attention with his attacking wing play and pace causing all sorts of problems for the Bellslea side. Scored his first goal for the club at Keith last April and notched his first goal at Bellslea Park against Rothes which was also the club’s 7000th. Appearances: 39; Goals: 4 Paul Campbell, Forward, Age 23: Paul is a forward and has joined the Broch from Maud. He has been on the scoresheet regularly in the junior ranks over the past two seasons at FC Stoneywood and notched his first goal for the Broch at Lossiemouth in the League Cup. He is good in the air and has blistering pace. Appearances: 4; Goals: 2 Peter Alexander Bruce, Forward, Age 25: P-A signed for the Broch on a permanent basis from Peterhead FC at the start of 2013/14 season having had several loan spells with the club. He is a tricky player, with two good feet and plenty of pace. He has a great shot on him and has found the net 38 times including the winner in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final last season. He has recently returned to the squad after being away due to work commitments. Appearances: 98; Goals: 38 Mark Cowie, Manager, Age 30: Mark took over as manager of the Broch when Kris Hunter decided to move to pastures new in April. His experience and calmness from his playing days will be of great assistance to the younger members of the playing squad. He is sure to bring fresh ideas to the team whilst staying true to the club’s philosophy of bringing through young talent. Has already led the club to success in the Aberdeenshire Cup this season and the win over Inverurie Locos at the start of February sees the club reach a second successive Aberdeenshire Shield Final. Appearances: 242; Goals: 25 Mark is ably assisted by James Duthie who has a wealth of experience at Highland League level, Alex Mair who has been on the Broch’s coaching staff for several years now and new faces Steve Doak goalkeeping coach, Brent Bruce fitness coach, Ross Cardno club physio and Leanne Reid assistant physio. There are also two community coaches Shelley Sutherland & Graeme Noble who play a tremendous role with the young age groups.
