American Songbook I Meet the Artists

Joey Arias has been revered since the 1980s as a central figure in NewYork City’s fertile downtown performance scene. Born in North Carolina,Mr. Arias moved with his family to Los Angeles at the age of six. GaryAustin, founder the famed Groundlings improv troupe, invited him tobecome an original Groundling at the age of 16, making him the youngestmember in the history of the group. Soon thereafter he was signed toCapitol Records as the lead singer for the band Purlie. Mr. Arias laterbecame a close friend and collaborator of German countertenor KlausNomi, and the pair was scouted by David Bowie, who invited them to per-form with him as part his infamous appearance on Saturday Night Live.

A fan of Billie Holiday since childhood, Mr. Arias first displayed his affinityfor Lady Day on his 1987 release Arias on Holiday. The album featured“Good Morning Heartache,” original songs, and more contemporarytracks, including The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” and a cheeky inter-pretation of Madonna’s “Holiday”—all sung in a jazzy style evocative ofHoliday. Soon thereafter, Mr. Arias starred in Strange Fruit, an homage toHoliday that ran for over a year downtown and appeared in an expandedversion at the Antony Hegarty–curated Meltdown festival at theSouthbank Centre in London.

In the ’90s Mr. Arias established himself with twice-weekly shows at Bard’O. He became close to fashion designer Thierry Mugler, frequentlyappearing in Mugler’s fashion shows. Mr. Arias continues to play muse toMugler and recently starred in the Mugler-directed short film ZChromosome. Mr. Arias capped his decade-long run at Bar d’O with a moveto Las Vegas, where he originated the role of Mistress of Seduction inCirque du Soleil’s Zumanity and co-wrote three songs for the show. Aftersix years in that role, he returned to New York, where he became star andco-creator of Arias with a Twist with master puppeteer Basil Twist.
