Billie-Jean Raahauge Billie-Jean Raahauge’s position as a Deckhand aboard the Bateman’s Bay ferry ‘Escapade’ sees her juggling many different tasks on any given day – from traditional deckhand duties, to assisting the vessel’s Master and ensuring passengers are well looked after. As a mother of four she is no stranger to this level of multi- tasking. In addition to her work, over the past two years Billie-Jean has successfully completed qualifications in Marine Engine Driving – Grade 1 and Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal. It is her dream to one day become a fully qualified Master. Career highlight Being called upon to make a speech to graduating students at TAFE Illawarra (Moruya) has been a stand-out moment for Billie-Jean. While she typically shies away from public speaking, she was honoured to be a role model for fellow students of the TAFE where she studied. Benefit of training By undertaking the qualifications, Billie-Jean has learnt a ‘phenomenal’ amount – not just about maritime operations, but also all aspects of the natural marine environment. Despite having worked on the water for over 20 years as a deckhand, she knows there is always more to learn. She states Colin Tritton, her teacher at TAFE Illawarra, has been, “really helpful and awesome,” and she is quick to attribute her success to the incredible support she has received from the local community on NSW’s south coast. What it means to be a finalist “It feels pretty special. I’ve had heaps of support, especially from the local community. When people recognise your hard work, it’s always nice.” FINALIST TLISC Trainee of the Year - Maritime TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS INDUSTRY SKILLS COUNCIL 2015 Awards for Excellence
