GODOLPHIN, DARLEY TO MERGE IN 2016By Ron Mitchell
Sheikh Mohammed's Thoroughbred empire is
vast, with 2,000 horses in training, 2,500 breeding
stock, 1,500 staff members, and operations on four
continents.
Generally, Sheikh Mohammed's horses are bred
under the Darley banner and are then sent to race
under the Godolphin brand, as are horses acquired
privately and at auction. To this point the two have
operated separately, but all that will change in 2016
when Godolphin and Darley merge, with Sheikh Mo-
hammed's longtime bloodstock adviser John Fergu-
son in charge.
The combined entity will operate as Godolphin,
with the Darley name to "be used solely as a brand
to promote stallions," Godolphin said Dec. 22. Fer-
guson, who will give up training a string of Sheikh
Mohammed's steeplechase horses in the United
Kingdom, said the development makes sense.
"One is sourcing the other, and a well-planned,
common strategy can only strengthen both," Fergu-
son said. "We must ensure that Godolphin continues
to represent excellence in racing, and that the brand
serves as a constant reminder of the vibrancy and
energy of Dubai." BH

ONE MORE FOR PALACE AS MARES AWAITBy Claire Novak
Multiple grade I stakes winner Palace will
squeeze in one more start—the $100,000
Gravesend Stakes at Aqueduct Dec. 26—before
retiring to Spendthrift Farm.
When Spendthrift purchased breeding rights
for the son of City Zip in October, plans called for a
Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) bid. Having missed that
race because of a foot issue, Palace later finished
third in the De Francis Memorial Dash and second
in the Fall Highweight Handicap (gr. III) for trainer
Linda Rice and owner Antonino Miuccio.
"(Miuccio) wanted the option to keep Palace
through the end of the year," said Mark Toothaker,
Spendthrift's stallion sales manager. "We've wanted
the horse since we made the deal, but I understand
the owner's perspective; if I had a horse like Palace,
I'd want to keep running him, too."
Toothaker said Palace must arrive in Kentucky by
Jan. 1.
"Hopefully, after the Gravesend, they'll put him
on the van and we'll get him in time for the January
sale," he said. "We've already got around 125 mares
to him, and nobody's even seen him yet." BH

KAYF TARA KEEPS SIRING WINNERSBy Clive Webb-Carter
Kayf Tara is a fine example of a top-class stayer pro-
gressing to leading National Hunt sire. A four-time
group I winner for Godolphin—including the
2 1/2-mile Ascot Gold Cup (Eng-I) twice—Kayf Tara is
enjoying a particularly strong season.
The Long Walk Hurdle, a National Hunt group I
steeplechase at Ascot Dec. 19, produced an im-
pressive display by one of his sons, the Colin Tiz-
zard-trained Thistlecrack. The 7-year-old gelding
followed up his recent group II Long Distance Hurdle
victory with an eight-length win to become a leading
contender for the group I World Hurdle at the Chel-
tenham Festival in March 2016.
Kayf Tara, by Sadler's Wells—Colorspin, by High
Top, has 58 winners this year and progeny earnings
of £914,917 through Dec. 21. His winners include
recent group I Fighting Fifth Hurdle winner Identity
Thief, while Ballyandy, Rons Dream, and Copper Key
all won National Hunt listed races at the Cheltenham
open meet in November.
This timely success has led Overbuy Stud to raise
Kayf Tara's £3,000 stud fee to £5,000 for 2016. BH
HAVANA TO STAND IN THE PHILIPPINESBy Ron Mitchell
The Philippines' breeding program
will receive a major boost when
2013 Champagne Stakes (gr. I) winner
Havana takes up residence at Rancho
Santa Rosa in Santa Rosa Laguna in
February 2016.
Rancho Santa Rosa owner Erwin
Te Habla first saw Havana (Dunkirk—
Missy Turtle, by Kyle's Our Man)
when he visited Ashford Stud to
see American Pharoah and Giant's
Causeway. Te Habla was looking for
a stallion prospect, but Havana was
not on his radar screen until he scru-
tinized the colt's races.
"He definitely sold himself," said Te Habla, who
acquired Havana through his bloodstock agent, Karl
Brown.
Because there are quite a few stallions in the Phil-
ippines, the number of mares bred to each ranges
from 10-17 a year, Te Habla said. But 30 of Rancho
Santa Rosa's mares will be bred to Havana, and the
farm has received interest from other breeders.
"I believe that Havana is one of the most prom-
ising and exciting stallion prospects to stand in the
Philippines," he said. BH

X Y JET AGAIN EARNS TOP FIGUREBy Frank Angst
When X Y Jet earned the top Equibase Speed Figure for the week of
his Nov. 11 allowance/optional claiming race win at Gulfstream
Park West, trainer Jorge Navarro said he could see the son of Kantharos
competing with the country's top sprinters in 2016.
X Y Jet added credence to that forecast Dec. 19 at Gulfstream
Park with a runaway victory in the Mr. Prospector Stakes (gr. III). His 9
1/4-length victory secured X Y Jet his first career stakes victory and the
week's top ESF, this time a 121. For comparison, Breeders' Cup Sprint

STALLIONS
SELECTING SEASONS FOR MARES
Buying seasons for mares has become more
complicated. Bob McCann of McCann Blood-
stock notes that more stallions were syndicated
and more pay-early deals were done prior to the
great recession.
But the economic downturn forced stallion
managers to scramble to attract a dwindling
number of breeders by offering lenient terms
and innovative deals. Pay-out-of-proceeds,
"share the upside," and breed-secure deals have
become important menu choices, partially sup-
planting the more traditional live foal (LF) and
no-guarantee (NG) contracts.
Let's compare LF and NG seasons. Using
a fair market value of $10,000 for a live foal
stands and nurses season as the baseline, the
question is, what is the NG season worth? The
important variables that affect relative values
are the probability that a mare will produce a
viable foal and the cost of money.
The probability of a viable foal is
primarily determined not only
by the fertility of both mare and
stallion and the expertise of your
veterinarian, but by other factors
as well. Assume that your young
early-foaling mare has an 80%
chance of producing a viable foal
if bred to a typical stallion. Most
breeders face one of two choices
in paying for seasons: They borrow
money—perhaps at 4% if a low-risk
bank customer—or forgo invest-
ments. It's sensible to use 4%-5%
as your cost of money these days,
though there may be special cases
where it is higher or lower.
A logical approach is to compare the 2017
cost of both deals. Assume that the NG season
is priced at $7,000 payable in early 2016, the
cost of money is 4%, and you will have to pay
the NG season about 15 months (1.25 years)
earlier than you would have to pay the LF sea-
son. The 2017 cost of the NG season includes
the original $7,000 plus the carry cost of money.
The cost of money is 4% per year times 1.25
years times the cost of the NG season, or 5%
times $7,000, which equals $350. You expect to
be out a total of $7,350 by 2017 if you buy the NG
season. If you buy the LF season, you expect that
80% of the time you'll have to pay $10,000. Over
the long run you'll pay 0.8 times $10,000, which
equals $8,000 in such cases. If these assumptions
are valid, it's logical to buy the NG season.
There are risks either way. If you use LF
contracts and have nine viable foals from 10
mares, your costs will be $90,000 rather than
the $73,500 NG seasons would have cost. If you
have only seven foals, you come out $3,500
behind using NG contracts. BH

Only active stallions in North America (excluding stallions that were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season) with at least 150 named foals of racing age are included. All statistics are Northern Hemisphere only. AEI indicates how much purse money the progeny of one sire has earned in relation to the average earnings of all runners in the same years; average earnings of all runners in any year is represented by an index of 1.00. CI indicates the average earnings of progeny produced from mares bred to one sire, when these same mares were bred to other sires.
