Greetings of spring to each of you Looking forward to the 219th General Assembly Delegates and guests to the 219th General Assembly in Minneapolis, July 3-10, will be joined by guests from the Islamic Society of North America, the National Council of Synagogues and a representative of the Ojibway Nation of Lake Superior. Our three guests will speak at the Ecumenical Breakfast on Wednesday morning of the Assembly, and will be available to advise committees and bring greetings to all. The General Assembly Mission Council sent the paper "Toward An Understanding of Christian Muslim Relations" (pdf) for consideration by the General Assembly. The GAMC also reviewed and sent the paper "Christians and Jews: People of God" (pdf) to the Assembly. The 219th General Assembly will act on both papers. These two studies offer Christian theological reflection on the issues involved in these relationships. If approved, they will provide guidance and study material for Presbyterians and others. Renvovations to the Left Bank Building are Underway Major renovations to the Left Bank building at Montreat Conference Center are well underway, with completion expectedmid-summer 2010. The renovated space will be known as the Katherine and Thomas Belk Center at the Left Bank and will house two levels of meeting space. Conference rooms will be equipped with state-of-the-art video equipment, audio equipment, and a video-conferencing system. In addition, a ramp and lift will be added to increase accessibility. We believe in a God to whom "all hearts are open, all desires known." Sometimeswe have a lot of work to do--uncovering the desires of our own hearts--before wecan hear clearly what God may desire for us. An incarnational spirituality requiresthat we engage in prayerful dialogue with our own longings. As you ponder yourcongregation's call regarding size and numerical growth, you may find it helpful tomap out the yearnings that are imbedded in this choice.
At all three points on the map, the Spirit of God is working. All of our individualdesires, if we trace them back far enough, are rooted in the goodness of creationand oriented toward union with God. To be sure, they become distorted. Whatonce was called idolatry is now more commonly called addiction: placingsomething essentially good (food, drink, sex, money, work, approval) at the verycenter of our lives. Whenever we try to fill the "God-shaped hole" in our being withsomething other than God, we confuse the giver with the gift, investing ultimatetrust in persons or things too fragile to bear that weight. Even so, each longing isrooted in the subsoil of our God-given humanness.
