As restrictions in NSW and around Australia seem to be easing there is a collective want and hope for a more ‘normal’ 2021 school year. Semester Two has seen a return to regular teaching and learning and other programs at scho ol, with even an overnight school camp possible earlier this term. We have almost reached the end of a very different school year, with only two weeks of the school term to go (students’ last

day is Wednesday 16 December 2020). Never before in our lifetimes have we seen school and domestic border closures in

Australia. As restrictions in NSW and around Australia seem to be easing there is a collective want and hope for a more

‘normal’ 2021 school year. Semester Two has seen a return to regular teaching and learning and other programs at school,

with even an overnight school camp possible earlier this term. Hopefully, some of our extensive list of extra-curricular activities

and events such as band and dance festivals begin to return in 2021. It would also be lovely to see our P&C community

events like fairs and discos return sometime soon. Our school community has shown great resilience and support for our

school and one another during this pandemic. Our strong sense of community rose before COVID and will see us through to

    the end of this pandemic.

  • Kindergarten Orientation

Yesterday we held our third kindergarten orientation session for our new 2021 PPS kindy cohort. It has been exciting to see

our new kindergarten children for 2021 in our school enjoying time in the kindergarten classrooms. The children have all

enjoyed their sessions at school and seem ready for ‘big school’. While we have had to provide information via ZOOM to our

new kindergarten parents and carers, it has been lovely to meet parents as they have dropped off and picked up their children.

We are looking forward to our new kindergarten students starting next year. I’d like to thank Ms Carew, Mrs Doig, our

Kindergarten teachers and our office staff for coordinating our Kindergarten Orientation Program.

Presentation Day Assemblies and Year 6 Graduation

Families of students who will be receiving an award (Years 3-6 only) have been notified this week. Weather permitting, all

presentation day assemblies K-6 will be held on our outdoor covered netball court following strict COVID guidelines and

restrictions as set out by the NSW Department of Education and NSW Health.

Our K-2 presentation day assemblies will be held on Tuesday 8 December and our Years 3-6 assemblies will be held on

Wednesday 9 December 2020. One family member per student K-2 and one family member per award winner 3-6 has been

invited. The Year 6 Graduation assembly will be held on Wednesday 16 December. One family member per Year 6 student

has been invited to attend. Attending parents or carers will be required to enter and exit the school via the Rushall Street

entry only. On entry visitors will have to either sign in via the COVID safe QR Code or submit a COVID Safe form. Any parents

arriving and wanting to gain entry to the school from any other school gate will be re-directed to the Rushall Street entry. Your

cooperation in this matter is required and appreciated.

Communication with further details regarding presentation day assemblies and the Year 6 farewell and graduation

assembly has been distributed to parents and carers.

A great deal of planning and organisation has gone into restructuring our ‘usual’ presentation day assembly format to comply

with COVID guidelines as well as accommodate a limited number of parents and carers. All assemblies will be videoed and

uploaded to a secure YouTube channel and access given to all school families. This will ensure that other family members,

such as grandparents will be able to view the assemblies.

Please note that in the event of inclement or extreme hot weather assemblies will be held in the hall with only students and

teachers (without any parents or visitors). Should this occur, a SchoolStream alert notifying parents and carers that

assemblies will be in the hall will be posted as soon as the decision is made. If this affects you please ensure you have access

    to the school’s SchoolStream App.

Years K-5 End of Year Picnic – Tuesday 15 December

Our end of year picnic event for Years K-5 is going to be quite different and exciting this year. Our K-2 students will be enjoying

a movie, ‘Astro Kid’ (rated G) at the Hornsby Event Cinemas as well as a picnic lunch and grade disco back at school. Year

3 students will participate in an exciting Gymnastics and Ninja Warrior Day held at Moving Bodies, Mt Kuring-Gai. Our Years

4 and 5 students will enjoy a Water Sports Gala Day at school. Please refer to the communication to parents and carers

regarding these activities for further details / information.

These activities have been organised in line with the NSW Department of Education and NSW Health’s COVID-19 guidelines.

Our teachers and office staff have worked hard this year to find alternative activities and to ensure that the students have a

fantastic and enjoyable 2020 end of year picnic. Their dedication to our students is greatly appreciated.

    Year 6 Surf School

Our annual Year 6 surf school is going ahead this year and will take place on Tuesday 16 December. This is a highlight event

each year for our Year 6 students and a fun and exciting day out. Due to COVID restrictions parent helpers will not be

permitted at this event. The school will be employing extra teaching staff to supervise students and assist with the surfing

activities. I’d like to thank Mrs Herbert and the Year 6 teachers for coordinating this event. It always proves to be a big hit with

    the Year 6 children.

  • Social Distancing

Parents and carers are reminded to observe social distancing during school drop off and pick-up times. It is important that we

all continue to abide by NSW Health guidelines and observe the 1.5m social distancing rule. There are far too many parents

outside the school gates in close proximity to one another. Please also ensure that you only enter the school grounds for

essential purposes. Wherever possible communication with the school should be via the School Office either by phone or

email. Should it be necessary to enter the school grounds, you are to proceed directly to the school’s front office. Your

continued cooperation in these matters is greatly appreciated.

    Light Up Learning

It has been wonderful to see our students engaged in fabulous learning activities over the last fortnight. Class

3H enjoyed reading their school magazine and then rehearsed and performed a play.

  • Congratulations to these Year 1 students who received a Deputy Principal’s sticker for demonstrating their outstanding mapping skills during their Geography lessons.

    Day of Stars

Tomorrow, our Performing Arts groups will have an opportunity to perform their items for our Day of Stars showcase event.

These groups include our dance groups, 3-6 choirs, drama groups and public speakers. All items will be recorded and

uploaded to our school’s secure YouTube channel. Parents will be sent a link early next week providing the opportunity to

    view and enjoy the performances.

Our students have worked extremely hard throughout the year to produce entertaining performances and are looking

forward to showcasing their talents. We thank our wonderful teachers, students and the production crew from Reel Story for

giving us the opportunity to share their achievements with you.

Stage 3 Earth and Space 3D printing Project

As part of this term’s Stage 3 Earth & Space science program students were given the task of creating a scale model of our Solar System utilising the school’s two brand new 3D printers. Initially researching diameters, they then had to correct the distances to two significant figures and then convert that to miilimetres by dividing by 10 000. Next, in groups of four, using the CAD Tinkercad, they created virtual models of each planet, Pluto, Jupiter and Saturn’s largest moon, Earth’s Moon and one of their own choice. Each class then choose the group with the best work and these were printed. Finally they were given the task of creating a visual depicting the relative sizes of each planet. Pictured below are some truly great 3D Solar System visuals, all to scale.

    Library News

Please return all overdue books to the library. Although the library is closed for stocktake, books can still be returned. All home readers will need to be returned to class teachers. It is particularly important for Year 6 and any other children leaving the school to ensure that they have returned all books before they leave the school. If you have any questions or would like more information please contact me in the library.

Mrs Knight and I would like to give a special thanks to the library monitors for all their hard work throughout the year.

    P & C

The P&C Committee was delighted last week to hear some positive news about a recent grant

application. Earlier this year, the Committee made an application for a Community Building

Partnership grant. These grants are made available via the NSW State Government as a means of

“investing in infrastructure projects that deliver positive social, environmental and recreational

outcomes, while promoting community participation, inclusion and cohesion”.

The Committee applied for a grant for funding towards the resurfacing and drainage improvements to our school’s netball court and surrounds. Applications have been assessed and we have been awarded $35,000 towards this project. The Committee looks forward to working closely with the school in the new year to take this project to the next level.
