I certainly did, spending it with my mum, who is presently visiting from Queensland, my sister Jen, my daughter Amelija (mother of the twins) and of course the beautiful twins, Hazel and Elsie. MOTHER’S DAY ASSEMBLY It was standing room only for our special assembly, last Friday, dedicated to Mum’s and those special people in our lives who are like a mum to us. Thank you to all the students who participated in either the organisation of the assembly, in the Choir, Band and for the reading of dedications. We all enjoyed the singing by the Foundies too. A thank you also to Melody, Doug (for his talented drumming) and Dean for his musical expertise and excellent work with the band. We hope that you all enjoyed the morning. GRIP CONFERENCE Both Adam and I left Upper Ferntree Gully train station at the very early time of 6.45am on 1 st May to travel to North Melbourne for the Annual GRIP Student Leadership Conference. Besides the adventure of the travel, the students experienced a fun packed day that was very interactive and focussed on learning about their own individual capabilities whilst developing and learning about the responsibilities of leadership. They have come back with a lot of great ideas! A big thank you to Adam who coordinated the day. ANZAC SERVICE IN THE FOOTHILLS Whilst the Student Leadership team travelled to the city for the GRIP Conference, the remainder of the grade 5/6 students, together with members of the choir, joined with many of the schools in the hills, to commemorate ANZAC Day. The day was organised by the Members of 39th, 2/14th, 2/16th and 2/27th Battalion Associations. A moving address was given by Merren Stockdale, President 39th Battalion Association. Thank you to Melody who coordinated the Choir and our attendance. Newsletter Wednesday 15th May 2019 TOGETHER WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE

I trust that everyone had a very relaxing and enjoyable Mother’s day.

NAPLAN On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week all students in Grades 3 and 5 will be sitting the NAPLAN tests. Please remember that the results of these tests are just a snapshot of how your child is performing on a given day at a given time. It is important that your child doesn’t become anxious or overwhelmed by the experience. However, please ensure that your child has a good breakfast and an early night and is punctual on NAPLAN days. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or your child’s teacher.

CURRICULUM DAY School Council have given their approval for us to have a Curriculum Day on Friday 7th June. We have endeavoured to schedule the day to minimize the disruption to families by aligning it with the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. The teachers will be meeting for moderation activities and discussions and will be writing reports. Please mark the date in your diaries. If there is sufficient interest, After the Bell will run a Curriculum Day program. Please see Lyn to register your interest.

UPWEY HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS On behalf of our school, I would like to extend a big congratulations to three of our past students (2018 Graduates) who have each received an Upwey High School Year 7 Scholarship:

Danielle Robinson – Co-curricular Scholarship Aurora Edge – Sport Scholarship Lauryn Whatman – Academic Scholarship

Well done to each of you. We wish you all the best in your future studies.

CAR DAMAGE Very sadly I have to report that there has been extensive damage done to Lyn’s car (After the Bell) on the evening of Thursday 2nd May. Lyn’s car was parked in the Staff car park, opposite the main doors. The damage occurred, presumably by someone backing their car out, between the hours of 2.30pm and 7.00pm. Whilst it is a Staff car park, members of the school community do also use the car park to drop off and pick up their children. If you have inadvertently caused the damage and have not yet had the opportunity to contact Lyn, or were unaware that it was Lyn’s car, please contact either Lyn or the office asap. If you know anything about the damage caused, please also contact either Lyn or the office. Unfortunately this has left Lyn, without transport for the foreseeable future and having to catch public transport.

SCHOOL COUNCIL SUBCOMMITTEES Subcommittees are advisory bodies to the school council and assist council with work that needs to be done. They meet as directed by the council and report, in writing, to the council. Subcommittees regularly report at school council meetings providing advice and making recommendations to the council. Members of the subcommittees do not have to also be a member of School Council.

At Ferny Creek Primary, we have the following subcommittees in the following areas:

Finance Committee Education, Policy and Planning Committee Buildings and Grounds Committee Communications and Public Relations Committee Fundraising Committee Grants and Submissions Committee

The work of the sub-committees is important and invaluable to the successful running of the school.

The school council has the final responsibility for decisions. As subcommittees are open to non-school council members, members of the school community have an opportunity to be involved in school planning and council matters.

Subcommittees usually meet between regular school council meetings. This allows time for consideration of their particular area of responsibility and to decide on any necessary action or follow up.

If you have an interest in any of the areas and would like to be a member of one of our sub-committees, please contact either Jenny Royle (School Council President), myself or the office.

WELCOME BACK Welcome back to both Coby and Brian who have both been unwell but are now back on deck. We trust that you are feeling much better!

Have a great week and take care everyone, especially with all the coughs and colds around!
