Wedgefield is a deed restricted community. The restrictions are in place to protect Wedgefield and our residents, they are not there to punish anyone. The fire that happened several days ago was caused by a resident who didn’t pay attention to the dry conditions, the high winds or the fire hazard warning. This morning on Facebook there is a conversation about an apparent resident getting 3 roosters, I’m sure his neighbors will greatly appreciate that. The comments that I have seen and heard are “It’s my property and I can do whatever I want on it”, or “the HOA is not mandatory and that’s why I moved to Wedgefield”. Please be aware that while paying the $50.00 annual dues to the HOA is optional, the deed restrictions are not. If you have any questions about that please look at a copy of your deed. Please know also that the HOA is currently reviewing options to start fining residents who are in violation of the deed restrictions. The concept is actually fairly simple. Have respect for your neighbors and expect them to have respect for you. Would you want your neighbor to have three roosters waking you up at dawn each morning? If not, then they probably expect the same from you. If we all follow the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” then we should all be able to live in peaceful harmony. Wedgefield - A Deed Restricted Community

From The Desk of the Vice-President

With the recent fire in the estates, along with several comments that I have seen on Facebook and heard verbally, I feel compelled to write this article.

Helen Unser requested assistance from Sea World in saving our injured crane and they came through this time. The bird was captured behind the 9th tee box with a gun fired net. You see the gun being held in one of the

photos by the male employee while the female holds the captured bird.

We have often tried to get county, state and anyoneto help our birds when they are injured (usually by golf balls hit into them) and this was the first time we got anyone to help and it was Sea World, again all due to the perseverance of Helen. Good job Helen!

The Wedgefield Green Thumb Garden Club is happy to announce that we are celebrating our 6th birthday and still going strong. This is due to our dedicated members holding this club together with interesting & informative programs each month. The members also take precious time to judge yard of the month which improves the appearance of our community. We are all bonded together by our mutual interest in gardening.

Whether each individual is a new Florida gardener or they are a long time Master Gardner. The members share information by preparing programs, bringing in speakers or planning a field trip each month.

April’s program was very informative & presented by our long time member Connie DeVries. May’s program is being arranged by Dulce Rodriguez. Thank you to our members for your dedication to keep our club educational & fun for all involved.

We meet the 1st Thursday of each month at the Wedgefield Country Club at 11:00 A.M. to enjoy a program and stay for lunch after to socialize.

If you would like to participate, please call Janis at 407-568-6563.

On Saturday, April 9th, 22 Wedgefield residents gathered at the Wedgefield Clubhouse and Restaurant for the very first Wedgefield Paint Night event.

The event was organized by Wedgefield resident Evelyn Perez. Over the course of 2 hours, a group painting lesson was provided by a local artist from the Heartsy.Buzz company.

The first round of drinks was provided by Christine Rhodes David, a realtor with Watson Realty. A great time was had by all whom attended!

Due to positive feedback on this event, Evelyn will be scheduling another Wedgefield Paint Night soon and the information will be posted on the Wedgefield Homeowners’ Association website and Facebook page, so stay tuned!

On Saturday, April 9th, Orange County Fire Rescue and Florida Forest Service battled a wildfire of approximately 20 acres in the area of Ortega and Paddock Streets. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office assisted in directing traffic. It took about 3 hours to contain this fire however it was monitored over night. No injuries were reported however some residents had damage on their property.

This is a reminder for everyone to be careful about using grills, discarding of matches or parking vehicles on grass, all which could start a fire. In last month’s article, you were reminded to create defensible space around your structures, allowing firefighters room to access a fire and put it out. Please consider these suggestions again, as we are in a dry period at this time, with a lot of fuel on the ground. There is the danger of another fire that may be harder to contain and could be near your home. Remember there are no fire hydrants in the estate area (the lots that are 1 acre or larger). The water to fight a fire has to be brought to the fire by tanker truck, usually obtaining it from the large canals.

Wedgefield, has been a Firewise Community for over 15 years. We were among the first 7 communities in the United States to become Firewise. During that time I have been honored to lead this great group as we tried to educate the residents about wildfires and how to protect their property. I no longer live in Wedgefield and feel that it is time for new leadership by a Wedgefield resident. If you care about this community, like I have, this is a great opportunity to volunteer your time and energy to this worthwhile cause. Even though, I am retiring from this position, I will continue to give Wedgefield Firewise my support as I hope you will.

Thank you. Mary Prescott, [email protected]

PAGE 17 The Wedgefield News VOLUME 15 ISSUE 5

During the last half of MARCH to the present date of APRIL 12, 2016 based on Orange County Sheriff’s crime statistics on OCSO web site we have had TWO Auto Burglaries in the 2100 Block of Albion.

I am happy to say that after a full year since our Wedgefield NHW page in Face Book we are up over 950 current members. Along with the large number of members comes the problem of policing the posts. Evelyn Rodriquez Perez has done a masterful job in doing so but she needs the help of every member. Recently we had some erroneous posts on the page about the source of the Wild Fire that we experienced on Saturday the 9th of April. I would ask that anyone who posts on any page, to be sure of the information before posting – enough on this subject.

I have received several complaints about speeding vehicles and of course NHW has no enforcement capability so I have been suggesting a call to the non-emergency number to report the occurrence. I have also recently received another number that may get better results and that number is (407) 836-0800 and that number can be called during normal working days and hours. The report will be taken and forwarded to OCSO Traffic for specific action.

We have seen this before but it still applies: with the warm weather we are going to see more of our youths taking advantage of the pleasant weather to walk the neighborhood at all hours of the day and night. Based on that and our history of automobile burglaries it is proper to issue a reminder to “BAG IT”. Doing something is as simple as using a Cloth Shopping Bag....and a habit. By removing pilferable items from our vehicles we remove the opportunity for Crime. By being lazy and complacent leaving items of value in the vehicle we create the opportunity For Crime... Also we should only Park in well lit areas when shopping in the evening. Remember Three easy things...1-2-3 Bag it, Lock it or lose it, Light it up And always ”Make it a Habit!” Remember an unlocked vehicle will be visited and one with a valet key will usually go for a ride.

Last but not least, if you chose to walk after dark and in the street, PLEASE DO wear some item of reflective material or have some type of lighting device to warn drivers of your presence. Unlighted walkers and unlighted golf carts continue to challenge Wedgefield’s safety record. So far drivers and walkers have been lucky.

Now let us all be good neighbors and make the effort to be observant and take appropriate action “SEE SOMETHING – SAY SOMETHING”To report a crime in progress, fire or medical emergency Dial 911The number to report suspicious activity or a crime committed Dial 407-836-HELP (4357) After dialing the appropriate OCSO Number THEN PHIL UNSER at 407-679-6644 (24hrs)

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH REPORT No pursuit, No patrol, No confrontation, JUST WATCH and REPORT.

As we begin our new Yard of the Month season, we welcome back a previous honorable mention whose yard has matured into Aprils YOM.

New Wedgefield homeowners Debbie and Jessie Wutter have further developed this well manicured yard with their personal style, and plan many more improvements. They moved here from Pennsylvania in October 2015. The house is one of the first you seen when entering Wedgefield. As you drive past, you will enjoy sago’s and queen palms, hibiscus, hawthorn, red ixora, red vinca’s, and one of the best St Augustine lawns in our neighborhood.

A few other honorable mentions can be seen at 20823 Nettleton, and 2714 Babbitt.

ZAXBY’S TO SPONSOR YARD OF THE MONTHZaxby’s on State Rd 50, in order to support the community of Wedgefield, will honor each winner of Yard of The Month with a $25 gift certificate. This is in appreciation for all of the homeowners hard work. So Wedgefield residents, it’s time to spruce up your yard. Thank you to Zaxby’s & good luck to all residents.

Wedgefield Community Traffic Safety Committee

Wedgefield Community roadway traffic has become unsafe, hazardous and causing extensive property damage. The residents, their children and guests of Wedgefield are being put in harm’s way by a majority of motorists exceeding posted speed limits and illegal truckers exceeding weight requirements and speeding.

We are committed to inform and elicit input from Wedgefield residents to determine the most beneficial ways to maintain a safe traffic environment for Wedgefield residents, their children and guests.

The Committee compiled a list of suggestions for Orange County Traffic Engineering that may be helpful in addressing these traffic issues with various Traffic Calming methods. Many of these suggestions were based on how other neighborhoods, with similar traffic safety issues (such as Avalon), mitigated their traffic problems. There is a link at the bottom of this article for your feedback and any additional traffic management suggestions that you may have. It is the Committees goal to keep the residents informed while providing a means for our residents to have input and suggestions on Traffic Safety issues. We will be available for residents immediately following each HOA monthly meeting and will also have updates in the HOA monthly newsletter. Bear in mind that we can only provide suggestions, the Orange County Traffic Engineers will determine what actions are warranted and how they will be implemented.

Following is a list of suggestions:ROADWAY ADDITIONS1. Install a mini-roundabout, cement parabolic dome in design with the use of micro-asphalt at Macon Parkway and Archer St.2. Many families and friends came out to support students who participated in the Columbia Elementary School Talent Show on Friday, April 8th 2016 at East River High School. There were many great acts ranging from singing and dancing to martial arts and cowboy roping.

Many of the talented students who participated were from our own local neighborhood, Wedgefield! One of the many talented groups was kindergarten Girl Scout troop 4643 who sang Girl Scout songs and recited the Girl Scout promise. Trivia Night at the Clubhouse Wednesdays at 7pm

The first Trivia night was a success! Everyone had a great time and had to think hard to answer the questions from Jerry Flynn the MC of the evening. There were about 8 teams competing for the First Place prize of a Wedgefield gift certificate.

Put this on your calendars for Wednesdays and come out to join in the fun!
