ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

My sincere gratitude is given to all the people who encouraged and helped me through the process of developing this Theophostic Prayer Ministry Basic Training Program. Their steadfast hearts gave me the support I needed to keep going as I prepared this Participant’s Workbook and the accompanying Leader’s Guide and Ministry Guide. I offer my deepest thanks to:

my husband, Tom, whose kindness and patience are always with me. His faithful support and constant encouragement were a great blessing to me. This was a journey that he and I walked together.

my twin sister, Jackie Smolek, who gave me excellent advice and loving encouragement through it

all. I thank her especially for the hours of proofreading she did for me and for her suggestion to prepare a book of summaries for the training that became the Ministry Guide.

my children and extended family members, for their understanding of the amount of time this

project took.

my friend, Wendie Benton, who spent hours at the computer helping me with the format for many of the pages in the training books. Her skills and generous spirit were a great blessing.

my friend, Cheryl Wagner, whose excellent computer skills saved me so much time. Her loving

support and kindness were just what I needed.

my friends, Ted and Mary Dinsmore, whose proofreading and computer skills were a great help to me. I know the Lord put them in my life to work with me during the final editing of all 3 training books. I especially thank Ted for developing the format of the Lesson Plans and helping with the assembling of the books.

my friends from Costa Rica, Zelmira Valverde and Fabricio Ulate, whose enthusiasm for

presenting the training program in their country was a source of inspiration to me.

Dr. Ed Smith, the founder of Theophostic Prayer Ministry, for allowing me to fulfill the strong desire in my heart to train people to do the ministry process thoroughly and effectively.

PREFACE

I was first introduced to Theophostic Prayer Ministry while attending a Christian Conference in 1998. My great appreciation for the ministry inspired me to develop a 16 Week Basic Training Program to be used along with the Basic Seminar Manual and the Basic Training DVD Series. Drawing on my teaching background, my goal was to offer a comprehensive training process that would thoroughly train people to facilitate the ministry. The 16 week training process developed gradually as I presented several pilot training programs. Through these programs, I was able to benefit from the feedback of the participants. Everything I learned from these experimental programs has been incorporated into this 2007 edition of the program. The books needed to participate in the training are the Basic Seminar Manual, a Leader’s Guide, a Participant’s Workbook, a Ministry Guide, and a DVD Ministry Demonstration Student Workbook. These books are designed to be used together to give the participants a thorough understanding of the ministry and the ability to facilitate it effectively. The 16 week program can provide a community experience during which the participants learn the ministry, practice it together, observe DVD ministry demonstrations, and also receive mentoring. It offers pastors and ministry leaders a standardized tool for bringing forth well trained facilitators to serve on ministry teams. My hope is that through this training program many lay people and professionals will become fully equipped to take the gift of Theophostic Prayer and share it with others. My prayer is that the Lord’s plan for Theophostic Prayer Ministry will be accomplished through those who dedicate themselves to and persevere through this training process. Andrea S. Panozzo

INTRODUCTION This Participant’s Workbook is one of three books that make up the Theophostic Prayer Ministry 16 Week Basic Training Program. The other two books are a Leader’s Guide and a Ministry Guide. The 16 week program is intended to be used as part of the overall training process suggested by the Theophostic Prayer Ministries office. This process consists of the following steps: 1) viewing the Basic Training Seminar DVD Series; 2) learning the content of the Basic Seminar Manual; 3) viewing the seven live demonstrations of the Ministry Demonstration Training DVD Series; and 4) taking up to eight months to practice with a team both facilitating and receiving ministry. Of these training steps, the second and third can be accomplished by participating in the 16 week program since the studying of the Basic Seminar Manual and the viewing of the Ministry Demonstration Training DVD Series are incorporated into it. This 16 week program is meant to be experienced, whenever possible, within a church or community setting following a Theophostic Prayer Ministry Basic Training DVD Seminar. However, individual training can be done when a supervisory group setting is not possible. It is assumed that since you have in hand this Participant’s Workbook, you are planning to participate with a group of people to learn Theophostic Prayer Ministry. It is assumed that you own a copy of the Theophostic Prayer Ministry Basic Seminar Manual ©2007*, are committed to learning the content of the manual, and are willing to see this process through to the end. It is also assumed that you and those who will be experiencing this training have viewed the entire 2007 edition of the Theophostic Prayer Ministry Basic Training DVD Series that is available through Theophostic Prayer Ministries (www.theophostic.com). Before proceeding, it is vital that all of the above be in place. *Note: If you have the 2005 edition of the Basic Seminar Manual, then this Participant’s Workbook will not correspond with what you have. A Participant’s Workbook that corresponds to that edition is available through Theophostic Prayer Ministries (www.theophostic.com). Objectives of the Participant’s Workbook The 16 Week Basic Training Program has been developed with three primary objectives in mind. These objectives are reflected throughout the content of the Participant’s Workbook. 1. To offer a balance of several different teaching methods in order to address the distinct learning

styles of the training participants. This balance is accomplished through the following teaching tools: Reading Assignments, Study Aids, Homework Questions, Group Discussions, Comprehension Tests, DVD Ministry Demonstrations, Practice Worksheets, Practice Ministry Sessions, and Mentoring.

2. To help the participants, as well as the leaders of the program, grow in their relationship with God. Since this ministry is, in its most basic form, intentional and focused prayer, each lesson in the Participant’s Workbook is designed to provide an open door for the presence of the Lord through the use of prayer and scripture (music is optional). Time is allowed during each training lesson for the participants to share their thoughts concerning the relationship of the weekly scripture passage to the teachings of Theophostic Prayer Ministry. The use of scripture makes the strong biblical foundation of the ministry evident and emphasizes to the participants that only the Lord Jesus can truly equip them to become effective TPM facilitators.

3. To provide a total learning process that adequately equips people to facilitate the ministry procedure. This process consists of a three-fold approach for learning, which includes Teaching,

xi

Training, and Mentoring. These three teaching methods are interwoven throughout the Participant’s Workbook:

• Teaching involves presenting information about Theophostic Prayer Ministry to the training

participants. The essential information that students of the ministry need to learn is contained in the 14 Chapters of the Basic Seminar Manual ©2007. The content of the manual is the foundation upon which the entire 16 week program is based.

• Training involves application of the information that has been learned. The Participant’s

Workbook provides many opportunities for the training participants to develop their ministry skills through the use of several types of practice activities. Along with these practice activities, the participants apply what they have learned by facilitating the TPM process with each other during practice ministry sessions. Also, the participants are given the opportunity to see the application of the TPM principles they are learning by viewing seven DVD Ministry Demonstrations of Dr. Smith facilitating TPM.

• Mentoring involves observation and evaluation. During several lessons of the Training Program,

the participants are given the opportunity to be observed, advised, and evaluated by experienced facilitators in mentoring types of situations as they practice ministry together. Although experienced mentors may not always be available, this is the best training approach to use. If other mentors are not available, the training leaders provide as much mentoring as possible by observing and evaluating the participants while they are in their practice ministry groups.

Content of the Participant’s Workbook The activities contained in the lessons of this Participant’s Workbook help to teach, train, and mentor the participants. All of the materials needed to do these activities are provided in this Workbook. The main components of the training lessons are listed below along with the purpose for each one. • Scripture Discussions and Prayers (Music is optional) – to promote the spiritual growth of the

training participants • The Chapters of the TPM Basic Seminar Manual – to teach the information needed to understand

and facilitate TPM • Homework Questions Related to the Content of TPM Manual – to emphasize the main ministry

concepts in the TPM Manual • Comprehension Tests – to evaluate the participant’s understanding of what has been taught from the

TPM Manual • Practice Worksheets – to develop the participant’s ministry skills through the application of what has

been learned • Group Discussions – to enable the participants to express their comments and questions about what

they are learning • DVD Ministry Demonstration Summaries and Discussions – to provide observation and analysis

of actual ministry sessions in which TPM principles are applied • Study Aids (summaries, outlines, charts) – to provide a resource for the participants to draw upon as

they study and review the essential information about the ministry • Practice Ministry Sessions – to provide application in ministry settings of the facilitating skills the

participants have learned • Mentoring – to give the participants the opportunity to receive advice from and be evaluated by

experienced TPM facilitators

xii

Format of the Participant’s Workbook The Participant’s Workbook focuses on 10 main areas of study. These 10 areas that are listed below correspond to the main topics found in the TPM Basic Seminar Manual ©2007. • Section One explains the purpose for and the content of the training program. • Sections Two defines what Theophostic Prayer Ministry is and explains the basic principles it is

based upon. • Section Three describes what the basic elements are of the ministry process. • Section Four describes in detail how to facilitate a ministry session. • Section Five provides information concerning how facilitators should deal with hindrances to the

ministry process. • Section Six clarifies what the outcome of the ministry process is. • Section Seven explains how sin should be dealt with during a ministry session. • Section Eight teaches how people can do the ministry process for themselves. • Section Nine offers advice for incorporating Theophostic Prayer Ministry into a church setting. • Section Ten encourages the training participants to continue practicing ministry beyond the 16 weeks

of training in order to become experienced TPM facilitators. Usage of the Participant’s Workbook This Workbook will help to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to facilitate Theophostic Prayer Ministry. When using this Participant’s Workbook, you will be led step-by-step through the basic training process. In the Introductory section of the Workbook, there is a Training Program Overview that will help you understand the structure of the whole training program. There is also a Lesson Summary page at the beginning of each section of the Workbook that explains the components, activities, and homework assignments related to each training meeting. Each of the training meetings will take approximately 2 ½ hours to complete. The three main parts of each lesson are: • Opening Steps – 20 minutes • Basic Steps – 2 hours • Closing Steps – 10 minutes

CONCLUSION There is a great need for highly equipped TPM facilitators. There is also a need for people to commit themselves to seeing this become a reality in the Body of Christ. It is hoped that this Participant’s Workbook will be a useful tool for training many people to effectively facilitate the ministry process. If you are using this Workbook to become a well-equipped TPM facilitator, prepare thoroughly for each lesson and avoid cutting corners when going through the training process. The standards must be high for those seeking to minister to hurting people.

INTRODUCTORY MEETING DVD MINISTRY DEMONSTRATION DISCUSSION

The God Who Watches Over Us

Series One, Session One

Discussion Question 1 – How did this DVD ministry session demonstrate the first principle of TPM: Our present situation is rarely the true cause of our ongoing pain? Discussion Question 2 – Why did the facilitator frequently ask the person questions that contained words that were reflective of what she was saying? Discussion Question 3 – What principle of TPM explains why the facilitator of this session acknowledged the free will of the person often with statements such as: What are you willing to…? What is your choice…? Would you allow…? Are you sure…? Discussion Question 4 – What occurred during and after this session that gives evidence the person truly had a transforming experience of God?

SCRIPTURE FOR LESSON 1 Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
