Claim: Parents should be able to access students’ grades.Evidence: A student is a child under protection of parents.Detail 1: They are a minor, under legal care of guardian.Detail 2: Not always mature enough to be trusted.Detail 3: The guardian should always be in the know.

Beyond the issue of money, parents should be able to access students’ grades because students are under their protection. According to state law, students are minors under the legal protection of their guardians, usually parents. Part of that protection is ensuring education is occurring; therefore, parents should access student grades. Further, students are not always mature enough to be trusted to share their grades. Parents must protect students from their own immaturity and help monitor grades. Parents or guardians should always be in the know about student performance to best help and protect their learning. Protection is crucial for student development, making the need for parents to access student grades of great importance.

Claim: Parents should not be able to see their children’s grades.

Evidence: Stresses kids out.

Detail 1: Parents continuously ask about missing assignments.

Detail 2: Parents do not know what the assignments even are.

Detail 3: Students become overwhelmed with continuous questioning.

In addition to an invasion of privacy, parents accessing students’ grades creates stress. In a survey of Dansville High School, 90% students felt their parents were continuously asking about missing assignments; this causes pressure for answering and working for the students. Further, parents often do not know what the assignments are. It’s stressful for students to attempt to explain the requirements for all assignments. Eventually, students become overwhelmed with continuous questioning, creating building stress in their lives. Perhaps students would be less stressed about school as a whole if parents stopped checking their grades.
