INVITATORYOfficiant Alleluia. Christ is risen.People Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia.Officiant O God, make speed to save us.People O God, made haste to help us.All Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God:

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia.PHOS HILARON

Be seated. Psalm 104: 25-35, 37 Setting: Edward Cuthbert Bairstow

25 O Holy One, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, creatures both small and great.27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, which you have made for the sport of it.28 All of them look to you to give them their food in due season.29 You give it to them; they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

2

THE PSALM OF THE DAY (sung by choir)30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth.32 May the glory of God endure for ever; may the Holy One rejoice in all creation.33 God looks at the earth and it trembles; God touches the mountains and they smoke.34 I will sing to God as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being.35 May these words of mine find favor; I will rejoice in the Holy One.37 Bless the Holy One, O my soul, Alleluia!Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Genesis 32: 24-29Lector A reading from the book of Genesis

Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then the man said, “You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.

Lector Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.People Thanks be to God.

MAGNIFICAT Luke 1:46-55Deacon Antiphon: I will ask God, who will give you another to be your advocate,

who will be with you for ever, the Spirit of Truth. Alleluia. All My soul proclaims your greatness, O God; my spirit rejoices in you, my Savior,

for you have looked with favor on your lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed; you, the Almighty, have done great things for me, and holy is your Name. You have mercy of those who fear you from generation to generation. You, O God, have shown strength with your arm, and scattered the proud in their conceit.Casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly. You have filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.

You have come to the help of your servant Israel, for you have remembered your promise of mercy, The promise you made to our forebears, to Abraham, Sarah, and their children forever. Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

I will ask God, who will give you another to be your advocate, who will be with you for ever, the Spirit of Truth, Alleluia.

THE SECOND LESSON Ephesians 2:14-22Lector A reading from the letter to the Ephesians

For Christ Jesus is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups [both Jews and Gentiles,] into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.

Lector Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.People Thanks be to God.

NUNC DIMITTIS Luke 2:29-32Deacon Antiphon: Guide us waking, O God, and guard us sleeping,

that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. Alleluia.All O God, you now have set your servant free to go in peace as you have promised;

For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, whom you have prepared for all the world to see:A Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.Guide us waking, O God, and guard us sleeping, that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. Alleluia.

At this time, all will move and gather in the area of the baptismal font in the back of the sanctuary, as we sing the following hymn.

RENAMING AND RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWSOfficiant John, we are gathered here today to witness a significant time in your life. On the day of Pentecost in 1956, you were baptized as an infant into household of God and received the name Janet Ruth Yarbrough. We honor and respect the names given you by your parents. We now release them into your history and acknowledge that the time has come to declare a new name. This name is the culmination of a journey of discovery and, at the same time, a new beginning. People There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free,

there is no longer male or female, for all of us are one in Christ Jesus.Officiant The candidate for renewal of baptismal vows will now be presented.People We present John Raynor Shipp Yarbrough to reaffirm his baptismal vows. The Officiant asks the candidate

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.Officiant Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?People I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.Officiant Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?People I will, with God’s help.

6Officiant Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return

to the Lord?People I will, with God’s help.Officiant Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?People I will, with God’s help.Officiant Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?People I will, with God’s help.Officiant Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of

every human being?People I will, with God’s help.Officiant Let us now pray for John who has renewed his commitment to Christ.Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you have overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your service. Renew in this your servant the covenant you made with him at his Baptism. John R. S. Yarbrough)

So the day dawn for me, so the day break, Christ watching over me, Christ as I wake. Be the day shine for me, be the day bright, Christ my companion be, Christ be my light. Be the day dark to me, be the day drear, Christ shall my comfort be, Christ be my cheer. Be the day swift to me, be the day long, Christ my contentment be, Christ be my song. So the day close for me, so the night fall, Christ watching over me, Christ be my all.

History of the name: At birth, I was named Janet Ruth Yarbrough - Janet because both my parents liked the name and Ruth which is my mother’s given name. In my mid-teens, I began secretly calling myself John, which is the masculine form of Janet. When I changed my name by court decree earlier this year, I wanted to keep my initials. The first middle name Raynor was the middle name of my paternal grandmother, as well as her father’s middle name. Shipp is my mother’s maiden name. As to your questions about what to call me, use John or J, whichever feels more comfortable. It’s up to you!
