who have overcome challenges in their lives to achieve excellence in different ways, anchored by strong values and sound character.

• Each of them have, in their own ways, exhibited our school values of Resilience, Integrity, Synergy and Excellence and serve as models to inspire us.

Proposal 1: Outstanding PeopleOWENS

In 1936, Jesse Owens went against Nazi leader Hitler by taking part in the Olympics. By then, he had already broken records in the long jump, 220 yard dash, and the 220 yard low hurdles. Despite the racial hatred all around him in Hitler's Germany, Owens fought hard and won a total of four gold medals. Showing tremendous resilience, integrity in his pursuit of excellence in athletics, Owens rose above the scorn and challenges to victory and success.

SWARNERSean Swarner is the first cancer survivor to complete the 7 summits, the highest peaks of the 7 continents from 2002 to 2007. He is an inspirational person who had exhibited life values strongly. There is strong resilience shown here, in surviving the harsh and threatening conditions on Mt Everest, while emotionally enduring the treatment for cancer.

Proposal 1: Outstanding PeopleCHURCHILL

Widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the century, Winston Churchill served as Prime Minister of Great Britain twice (1940-45 and 1951-1955). He is the only British Prime Minister to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Churchill exhibited excellence and leadership in the most influential way, giving hope to the people during times of fear and despair.

ROOSEVELTTheodore Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States of America. He was noted for his exuberant personality, range of interests and achievements. His achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician. Roosevelt was a good leader who sought tounderstand other people’sneeds and wants.

Proposal 2: Famous Mountains• Mountains have always been a universal

symbol of majesty, and ascending one has always been epitomised as a true test of tenacity, resilience and fortitude.

• Reaching its peak, which indeed require integrity and synergy, also represents the spirit of excellence and progress in overcoming a series of obstacles to emerge victorious.

Proposal 2: Famous MountainsEVEREST

Mount Everest is the earth’s highest mountain with a peak at 8,848 metres above sea level. It is located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas. In 1865, Everest was given its official name by the Royal Geographical Society upon a recommendation by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. Waugh named the mountain after his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest.

ELBRUSMt Elbrus is the highest mountain in Europe at 5642 m. It is located in the western Caucasus mountain range in Russia.The name Elbrus is a metathesis of Alborz which is derived from that of a legendary mountain in Iranian mythology.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 m above sea level. It is located in Tanzania.It is unknown where the name originates. European explorers had adopted the name by 1860 and reported that it was its Swahili name.

McKINLEYMt McKinley is the highest mountain in North America at 6,194 m. It is located in Alaska.In the late 1890s, a gold prospector name it “McKinley” as political support for then president William McKinley

Proposal 3: Precious Gemstones• Gemstones are mineral crystals that have the desirable

characteristics of strength, colour, and brilliance, and are usually formed in the Earth’s crust under the effects of pressure and temperature. Symbolically, they represent strength of character forged by resilience and integrity.

• In the hands of a skilful craftsman equipped with the appropriate tools, the excellence of the gemstones are revealed in its full brilliance, revealing the sound attributes within.

• Our students are like unpolished gems who will, under the committed guidance and care of their teacher, develop their brilliance and allow their full potential to shine from within.
