TADAO ANDO Tadao Ando is a Japanese architect whose style of architecture has been categorised as critical regionalism. His architectural character mainly consists of three features, Geometry, Nature and substance. He uses natural light wisely and is known for keeping the site as intact as possible. Another notable feature in his design is the access and circulation within the building. There is a unique connection between the outside and the inside. There are complex access paths in most of his works and these are all in place for a reason. In case of the Church on water, Tomamu, built in 1988, the church has a massive water body in front of it and the access to the church is by going around it and the path to the church and the water body is separated by a huge wall. Now, this is done so as to induce curiosity in the mind before reaching the entrance. One is able to hear and feel the presence of water before actually seeing it. He attempts to play with the senses. His major works include Row house in Simiyoshi, Church on Water, Church of light, Water temple, Suntory Museum, Hyogo Museum of art, Japanese pavilion for expo 92 etc.

His main material of construction is exposed concrete which is cast in situ making his designs more flexible. He also combines with this the use of Glass to bring in light.
