Project Title: “Basic Office Package and Web Designing with Wordpress Training”

What we did?During 7 days training program we conducted the training in Alpine Public School and a NGO named Rural Reconstruction Nepal. Students of class 8, 9 and 10 attended the training in the school. We taught the students Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Web Development with Wordpress along with languages like HTML and CSS. As an extra topic we did a short talk program on Importance of Information and Technology and The Magic in Coding. In two days training for the NGO, employees of the NGO were trained on blogging with Wordpress.

How we did?We had Alpine Public School in contact before we visited Charikot. On 14th May we met the principle of the school and planned the entire training. We set up the training hall and installed necessary software on every computers. We had two shifts each day- 7am to 10am for class 10, 11am to 3pm for class 8 and 9. First 3 days we trained the students on Microsoft Office Packages. Next two days we taught them basics of web development, crash course on HTML and CSS and Wordpress in the end.

We trained employees of NGO named Rural Reconstruction Nepal on blogging and wordpress on 16th and 17th May, 2016.We divided the work among ourselves. Each of were assigned a topic in each of the training. While one was speaking, others were helping the trainees. We conducted the training session with slides in projector. Each trainee was provided with a computer to work. Four of the trainers would be available to help anyone at any time.

Why we did?The world is far ahead in field of the information and technology while people in Nepal are far behind this race. In spite of having all the resources people do not have a clue about the power of technology and how it can change the world for good. We wanted to make people aware of technology. For that inspiring students to code was very important and we think we successfully did the job. On the other side expert people of NGOs were completely unaware of blogging platform. They had so many valuable information but no one knew how to share them with the world. So we made them capable of building a blogging site and reserving a domain and posting in those sites.

During the process of teaching, we learned a lot ourselves. We had to do a lot of preparation and become expert in those domain. We had to work hard to get things right. We learnt that teaching something you already know and making people understand it is very a difficult challenge. Another important lesson we learnt was to speak in front of a large audience. This project has certainly made us better presenters. With so much experience gained we must say in fact this was one of the most precious experiences we get.

There are a number of interesting things we discovered during this training process. We found girls very interested and inspired in technology in spite of what has been the popular belief. The girls we trained were ahead of boys in learning, understanding, solving problems and completing exercise. They also showed remarkable creativity.

Next thing to point out would be that it’s never too early to try new learning new things. These students we trained were only studying in school and they had been taught only very little, in fact what they have been taught in school is insignificant. But once we introduced these kids to exciting world of coding and technology, they wanted to reach out to newer things. To be more specific they did some cool animation with Microsoft Presentation. Others should interest in AI, game programming, app development etc. With right guidelines we believe they can achieve a lot in their little age.
