Isn’t This Fun? Investigating the Serious Business of Enjoying Ourselvesby Michael Foley
Simon and Schuster, June 2016 (WEL)
Michael Foley wants to understand why he doesn't appear to be experiencing as much 'fun' as everyone else. So, with characteristic wit and humour, he sets out to understand what fun really means, examining fun from every angle — its heritage, its paradoxical, complex nature, its cultural significance and the various activities we associate with fun. Sections on holidays, dancing, laughing, transgression, play and even fun with politics, will invigorate you with insights, make you laugh at life - and quite possibly prompt you to dance naked in the rain. He concludes that fun has become as much as of a burden as work. Foley makes a strong case for a return of play against purpose, absurdity against self-importance, the city against the car, the ordinary body against flawless models. A deeply thoughtful and liberating book.
Michael Foley has published critically-acclaimed poetry, novels. His first non-fiction book, The Age of Absurdity (Simon & Schuster 2010), was a bestseller and has been translated into seven languages.

Embracing the Ordinary: Lessons from the Celebrants of Everyday Life by Michael Foley
Simon & Schuster, July 2012 (World English Language)
In his follow-up title, Embracing the Ordinary: Lessons from the celebrants of Everyday Life (Simon and Schuster UK May 2012), Foley sets out to alter our perception of the mundane. In today's society devoted as it is to distraction and celebrity, it has never been more difficult to pay attention to the 'right here' and 'right now'. Our experience of everyday life is increasingly devalued. Drawing on a wide range of references, including philosophers, anthropologists, scientists, artists and writers Foley redresses this by unveiling the splendour in all that is deemed ordinary.

The Age of Absurdity by Michael Foley
Simon & Schuster, February 2010 (World English Language)
The good news is that the great thinkers from history have proposed the same strategies for happiness and fulfilment. The bad news is that these turn out to be the very things most discouraged by contemporary culture. This knotty dilemma is the subject of The Age of Absurdity - a wry and accessible investigation into how the desirable states of wellbeing and satisfaction are constantly undermined by modern life. Michael Foley examines the elusive condition of happiness common to philosophy, spiritual teachings and contemporary psychology, then shows how these are becoming increasingly difficult to apply in a world of high expectations. The common challenges of earning a living, maintaining a relationship and ageing are becoming battlegrounds of existential angst and self-loathing in a culture that demands conspicuous consumption, high-octane partnerships
2
and perpetual youth. In conclusion, rather than denouncing and rejecting the age, Foley presents an entertaining strategy of not just accepting but embracing today's world - finding happiness in its absurdity.

Inspirational Memoir
Among the Summer Snow: A Highlands Walkby Christopher Nicholson
World Rights: September Publishing (Hannah MacDonald)
Christopher Nicholson’s first book of nature writing is a beautiful account of an unusual obsession. In 2016 the author of The Elephant Keeper and Winter spent August searching for the remaining snows of the Scottish Highlands. His account of his solitary walk is by turns funny, fascinating and inspiring. A meditation on walking, on mountains, on snow and our changing climate, Nicholson also turns his curious eye on nature-lovers themselves. What are we looking for when we walk and what is it we want from nature? What is it we see and what is it we miss? What remains when we are gone and what have we lost from the landscape forever?A quizzical, ultimately uplifting, journey from a new nature writing voice. Nicholson’s previous book, The Elephant Keeper (4th Estate, 2010) was shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award and sold over 13,000 copies in the UK. His most recent, Winter, is also published by 4th Estate. Publication: June 2017Extent: 40,000 wordsTranslation rights: DLA
Stopping Places by Damian Le Bas
UK & Commonwealth: Chatto & Windus (Clara Farmer) Our world is very different to the one described to Damien by his great grandmother, a Romany. A nomadic life is unthinkable. Even she lives (very happily) in a bungalow now. As a child, Damian Le Bas would sit on his great-grandmother’s knee, begging for more tales of the old Traveller ways, told to him in the ancient Romany language. Now, Damian will discover the secret routes passed through the generations. He embarks on a year-long quest across the British Isles and visits the “stopping places”, the old sites of encampment known only to Travellers. But can Damian have the freedom that the nomad in all of us craves, or is the old Traveller way irrevocably lost? His life is very different from that of his forebears – Oxford educated and a poet and journalist, a chance to discover his past is also a

chance to write the book he has longed dreamed of. If you loved Isabel Fonseca’s “Bury Me Standing” then this one is for you.

Tidewrackby Darran Anderson
UK & Commonwealth: Chatto & Windus (Juliet Brooke)
This memoir will appeal to those who loved books such as The Outrun by Amy Liptrot, The Fish Ladder by Katharine Norbury or Helen Macdonald’s H is for Hawk. It is set on the banks of the river Foyle in Ireland and begins with a search for a missing relative who has perished in the waters. Anderson then recalls how his own grandparents lost their lives in the same river. The story takes us from war-ravaged Berlin to the street of Ireland and charts the fate of those destroyed by war. Anderson uncovers tales and mythologies in the surroundings of the city. It is, quite simply, a ravishing piece of writing that has enthralled all who have read it so far.

THOMAS DEKKER: MY BATTLE by Thomas Dekker
NEW
Ebury. UK & Commonwealth.
Thomas Dekker’s talent catapulted him to the top of international cycling. But behind the success lay the dark story of young cyclist hell-bent on his own self-destruction, sucked into a world of sex, doping, alcohol and money.
This truly is a cycling book unlike any other. Brutally honest at times, it also has something that one rarely comes across in a cycling memoir – vulnerability.

EDGE: WHAT THE BUSINESS WORLD CAN LEARN FROM FOOTBALL’S TALENT HOTHOUSE by Ben Lyttleton
NEWSmart thinking lessons for life from the world of football
HarperCollins. UK & Commonwealth.
Ben Lyttleton’s first book – The Art and Psychology of the Penalty Kick has become required reading for football clubs worldwide. In his latest book he asks “What can business learn from talent identification and talent management – and how can business leaders gain a personal and professional
8
edge from the world of football?” Finding the next superstar is a challenge for all businesses. There may be certain measurable skills that you can identify from a curriculum vitae but the intangible, immeasurable qualities that make up the next generation of leaders are harder to spot. There needs to be a revolution in the way we measure talent.
In this book, Lyttleton interviews some of the biggest names in football and asks them a simple question: “If you were running a business, how would you get an edge.” Their answers provide us with a unique insight into what separates the great from the good: resilience, ambition, leadership, decision-making, adaptability, composure under pressure. You can’t polish those on a CV.

THE BARCELONA LEGACY by Jonathan Wilson
NEWBlink. UK & Commonwealth.
When Johan Cruyff left the Barcelona manager’s job in 1996, it was amid some acrimony. There had been two years without a league title and there were realistic fears that Barcelona, as they had done so often in the pre-Cruyff era, would lapse into crisis. Instead, in the four years that followed, Barcelona became a crucible in which modern football was formed – not just in terms of its dominant tactical philosophy but in terms of the personalities and narratives that continue to shape today’s game.
This is a book in part about tactics, about how the theories that underpin the modern game were forged by Cruyff and his successors, but also about the people and personalities who gathered at the Camp Nou for what was effectively the greatest coaching seminar in history, about their friendships and rivalries and, in one case, an apocalyptic falling out that continues to shape the game.

THE COFFEEHOUSE REVOLUTION by Jonathan Wilson
NEW
Blink. UK & Commonwealth.
Modern football was invented in the coffeehouses of Vienna and Budapest in the 1920s and 1930s by a group of people who by the 1940s would, for reasons of their race, be dead, interned or have fled into exile.
Budapest in the decade before the Second World War was home to an unprecedented generation of coaches, most of them Jewish, who revolutionised how football was thought about and how it was played. Those who survived the Holocaust and remained in or returned to Hungary after the war helped create the Aranycsapat, the golden squad, the great side of Ferenc Puskás, József Bozsik and Nandor Hidegkuti that won the Olympic title in 1952 and twice hammered England before a four-year unbeaten run came to an end at the worst possible time, in the World Cup final of 1954. But there were others who
9
moved abroad, whether for straightforward professional reasons or because of anti-Semitism at home, who transformed the game in Italy, Argentina and Brazil. And there were others who didn’t make it, killed in the death camps or executed for their part in the anti-Fascist resistance.
This is a story that remains largely untold. Many of the key figures died tragically young and many of those who survived the war were reluctant to reveal how they had done so. But there’s more. More to be uncovered about them and their contemporaries, about the vibrant coffeehouse culture that for a glorious decade redefined football.

THE MAN AND HIS BIKE by Wilfried de Jong (translation by David Doherty)
NEW
Ebury. UK & Commonwealth.
…The helicopter is hanging above our heads. A woman with a child waves up to the family watching at home. Motorcycles tear past, sirens wailing. And here they come, the riders. Like a vast chameleon the peloton continually changes shape and colour. Four hundred tyres sing to us. Music for a Sunday afternoon.
Here they come. Here they are. There they go. It’s all over, consigned to the past once more.
We can still see the mud-spattered backside of a straggler, sitting crooked on his bike after a fall. The skin of his elbow has been grazed raw, the dirt of the Tour ground into the wound. But he must go on. The Tour waits for no man…
Wilfried de Jong is a star of Dutch sports writing and broadcasting. In this award-winning collection of cycling tales, his comic, melancholic, existential charm unlocks a sport that involves so much pain, punishment, isolation and a high probability of failure.
Whether he is describing being ejected from Paris-Roubaix, a terminal incident with a bird while out riding, painting the drama that unfolds in forgotten café as they wait for the Tour to pass, or explaining why he is standing stark naked on Belgian cobbles with a tyre in his hand in the morning mist, he always uncovers the true soul of cycling – why we do it, why we watch it, why we hate it, why we love it – stripped bare.

FOREVER YOUNG: THE STORY OF ADRIAN DOHERTY, FOOTBALL’S LOST GENIUS by Oliver Kay
Quercus. UK & Commonwealth.
Adrian Doherty was not a typical footballer. For one thing, he was blessed with extraordinary talent. Those who played
10
alongside and watched him in the Manchester United youth team in the early 1990s insist he was as good as Ryan Giggs - possibly even better. Giggs, who played on the opposite wing, says he is inclined to agree.
Doherty was also an eccentric - by football standards, at least. When his colleagues went to Old Trafford to watch the first team on Saturday afternoons, he preferred to take the bus into Manchester to go busking. He wore second-hand clothes, worshipped Bob Dylan, read about theology and French existentialism and wrote songs and poems. One team-mate says "it was like having Bob Dylan in a No 7 shirt".
On his 17th birthday, Doherty was offered a five-year contract - unprecedented for a United youngster at that time - and told by Alex Ferguson that he was destined for stardom. But what followed over the next decade is a tale so mysterious, so shocking, so unusual, so amusing but ultimately so tragic, that you are left wondering how on earth it has been untold for so long.
Oliver Kay is Chief Football Correspondent for The Times, and was recently shortlisted for “Football Journalist of the Year 2016” at the Sports Journalism Awards. Forever Young is his debut title.

The 12 Minute Weight Loss Plan: High intensity interval training + smart eating = fast, easy weight loss
by Dr Michael Spira
A straightforward, easy-to-follow diet and exercise book that teaches readers how to hit their weight goals with minimum effort, no special equipment and no gym membership. Sounds too good to be true? It works and is all backed up with the latest cutting-edge scientific research, incorporating High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), the latest health craze featured in Michael Mosley’s recently published fast exercise book.
HIIT is becoming increasingly popular, but recent publications have not explored how HIIT might help with achieving weight loss. By combining HIIT and Dr Spira’s own ‘smart-eating’ plan, weight loss goals become easy to achieve and the book carefully explains why traditional weight-loss techniques are so
often unsuccessful, before introducing and explaining the concepts that make these techniques so successful.
Dr Spira is one of the UK’s top obesity doctors and is an expert in HIIT, with bona fide scientific research supporting his claims and programme. An expert on easier dieting, he has been featured on several national TV programmes and has advised the UK government on an obesity programme. He is a member of the Association of the Study of Obesity and the National Obesity Forum and is a medical consultant at a leading group of wellness clinics which advise on diet and lifestyle.
