Every cloud has a silver lining … explore the meaning of this idiom. What do you know about any other idioms for encouraging positive thinking? Look at the examples in the PowerPoint choose one, draw a sketch of it then write a few lines to explain its meaning and when it might be Finally, think about difficult times you have experienced. Were there any positives that came out of them?Watch the short video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoFbaRXAgTE and discuss the clap for carers/Colonel Tom. Share ideas and explain that in both cases it was a way of showing appreciation for what others were doing, especially the key workers.Discuss the meaning of ‘appreciation’ and explain that the purpose of the session is to explore why it is important to appreciate people and things in everyday life and how we can show this. Think and discuss how showing appreciation makes others feel and how it affects our own feelings. Move on to explore how we can sometimes take things for granted. Share your ideas with a partner / family member .Then, discuss what we appreciate about school and the natural world – reflect on the fact that one of the positive outcomes of the pandemic was that nature flourished (every cloud has a silver lining). Next, explore the feeling of togetherness/community that the clap for carers may have created – being ‘in this together’. Did pupils go out and clap on Thursday evenings? How did they feel? Why is it important to feel part of a community? Returning to school is part of reconnecting with our class/school community. In pairs, discuss the positives of being part of a class. Discuss social distancing look at the signs and shops why do we have these signs in shops? Ending – select the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyI7UZR-SCA to go to The Great Realisation: Hindsight 2020 and watch this short video.Tomorrow you will be writing an explanation about the pandemic for children of the future.

LI: To compare two poems and use inference to answer questions
Watch Kit Wright video of him reading the poem - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zkpmhycThe words are on this site (copy the link below into Google – don’t use Explorer as it won’t work):https://prezi.com/bmuip2pn_w0z/the-magic-box-by-kit-wright/
And then watch/listen to Miroslav Holub’s poem ‘The Door’ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bazJvnuOLMMThe words are on this site: https://extrafilespace.wordpress.com/2012/08/30/the-door-by-miroslav-holub/
Compare the two using a Venn diagram or a double bubble.
Starter taskIdentify some similarities and differences of form and content.
Some things to think about: How the description and vocabulary makes it a good
poem, e.g. language features- alliteration, similes. How stanza 4 in The Magic Box is different in
content and tone from the rest of the poem. (Are the ideas more surreal/fantastical?).
How clearly we, as readers, see, feel, taste or hear the things described.
What message is the poet trying to get across? What might be behind the door?
Very mild, mild, hot and fiery children to complete the following:
The Magic Box by Kit Wright1) The poet uses alliteration when he writes about
“the swish of a silk sari”. Can you find another example of alliteration in the poem?
2) The poet wants to put some impossible things in the box. Can you find two examples of impossible things?
3) How do you think the poet was feeling when he wrote this poem? Give a reason for your answer using evidence from the poem.
4) The box has secrets in its corners. What do you think these secrets might be about?
5) Which do you think was the best item put in the box? Why?
6) What does the last verse (starting “I shall surf in my box….”) tell us about where the poet enjoys spending time?
Hot and Fiery to complete the following:7) Why do you think the poet includes the last joke
of an ancient uncle?8) What does the line “Its hinges are the toe joints of
dinosaurs” tell us about what the hinges of the box are like?

• Comparing how things were before the pandemic to how they are now
• Reflecting on what is the same and different about ourselves
• Reflecting on what is the same and different about school life
• Considering what is the same but different in the wider world
Click on the link below.https://drive.google.com/file/d/180JbXNNLxvm9qRw5TdCgo5GnjnYWNQJd/view?usp=sharing
Read out the quotation and discuss the meaning, reflecting on the value of diversity. Think about similarities and differences about yourselves. This could be physical, hobbies, family etc. Finish this section by making the point that if everyone was the same, the world would be a duller place.Use the mathematics question to introduce the theme of same but different. Move on to linking this to the pandemic and the fact that some things have stayed the same and others are different. Clarify that we will look at these in terms of ourselves, school life and the wider world. Begin with personal reflection time on what you feel may be the same now and what may be different, then move on to discussing how we can classify these changes.
Think about a Carroll diagram can you remember how it works?Think about which of the changes are permanent and which are temporary, e.g. social distancing will hopefully be temporary but washing hands well may be a desired permanent change! Next, share your ideas with a partner/ family member and discuss the questions. Shift the focus to changes in school life and use a prospectus as a context for discussing what may be different about school now as a result of making it safe in relation to Coronavirus. Finally, spend some time considering the impact of the pandemic on the wider world is recommended. Show the short video of the aeroplanes parked up at the airport , use this as a stimulus to discuss other changes that have had global impact. End with a positive view by considering which of the things that are different may be a good thing, such as people exercising more, less pollution etc.

Design a leaflet to advertise our school to new children.
As year 6 children you know your school much better than anybody else. Do you want other children to enjoy Dormers as much as you did? Plan a leaflet to advertise your school to new pupils (think year 3). Use the planning sheet in the link below to help you. You can design a folding leaflet on A4 if you wish or draw the leaflet in your project book.
