Toddler GroupThe Toddler Group meets on a Tuesday morning. The group is led by the pre-school staff and parents / carers are required to stay. It is a place for parents / carers to meet whilst their children have fun and learn to socialise. Children are the responsibility of their parents and carers. The Toddler session has a more relaxed structure than the pre-school sessions. There are always a wide variety of carefully chosen activities which include a messy/ sensory activity and a singing/music time. There is also a time for the children to experience physical play in and out doors (weather permitting) on large play equipment. At each session the children sit together to have a drink and a snack - this encourages

good social skills. The toddler group is a good introduction to the playgroup and can make the transition to Pre-school easier for some children.

Children’s development and learningThe provision for children's development and learning is guided by The Early Years Foundation Stage. Our provision reflects the four overarching principles of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (DfE, 2014). A Unique Child

Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

Positive RelationshipsChildren learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.

Enabling EnvironmentsChildren learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners, parents and carers.

Learning and DevelopmentChildren develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

How we provide for development and learningChildren start to learn about the world around them from the moment they are born. The care and education offered by our setting helps children to continue to do this by providing all of the children with interesting activities that are appropriate for their age and stage of development. The Areas of Development and Learning comprise: Prime Areas

- Personal, social and emotional development.- Physical development.- Communication and language.

Specific Areas- Literacy.- Mathematics.- Understanding the world.- Expressive arts and design.

For each area, the level of progress that children are expected to have attained by the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage is defined by the Early Learning Goals. These goals state what it is expected that children will know, and be able to do, by the end of the reception year of their education. The Early Years Outcomes (DfE, 2013) guidance sets out the likely stages of progress a child makes along their learning journey towards the Early Learning Goals. Our setting has regard to these matters when we assess children and plan for their learning. Our programme supports children to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need for:Personal, social and emotional development making relationships; self-confidence and self-awareness; and managing feelings and behaviour.

Physical development

moving and handling; and health and self-care.Communication and language listening and attention; understanding; and speaking.Literacy reading; and writing.Mathematics numbers; and shape, space and measure.Understanding the World people and communities; the world; and technology.Expressive Arts and Design exploring and using media and materials; and being imaginative.Learning through playBeing active and playing helps young children to learn and develop through doing and talking. This is how young children learn to think about and understand the world around them. We use the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory guidance to plan and provide a range of play opportunities which help children to make progress in all areas of learning and development. This programme is made up of a mixture of activities that children plan and organise for themselves and activities planned and led by practitioners.Characteristics of effective learningWe understand that all children engage with other people and their environment through the characteristics of effective learning that are described in the Early Years Foundation Stage as: playing and exploring - engagement; active learning - motivation; and creating and thinking critically - thinking.

We aim to provide for the characteristics of effective learning by observing how a child is learning and being clear about what we can do and provide in order to support each child to remain an effective and motivated learner.

AssessmentWe assess how young children are learning and developing by observing them frequently, we use information that we gain from observations, photographs and parents/ carers to document their progress and where this may be leading them. We believe that parents know their children best and we ask you to contribute to assessment sharing information about what their children like to do at home and how they as parents are supporting development. We make periodic assessment summaries of children’s achievement based on our ongoing development records. These form part of children’s Learning Journeys. We undertake these assessment summaries at regular intervals as well as times of transition. E.g. moving to another setting or school.

The progress check at age twoThe Early Years Foundation Stage requires that we supply parents and carers with a short written summary of their child’s development in the three prime areas of learning and development - personal, social and emotional development; physical development; and communication and language - when a child is aged between 24 - 36 months. Your child’s key person is responsible for completing the check using information from on-going observational assessments carried out as part of our everyday practice, taking account of the views and contributions of parents and other professionals.

Parental communicationsThis is a vital area from initial registration where the individual needs of you and your child will be discussed to the information on the notice board, communication is essential. We will endeavour to keep you informed at every level and will provide each child with a daily diary, staff will write in this to help you to share in your child’s day. You are also encouraged to write in this diary to tell us anything, which may help us meet your child’s needs. A full handover of information is encouraged by staff at the beginning and end of your child’s session.

OrbitNew in 2016, we have started using a digital assessment program called Orbit. This program allows us make and collect observations of each child digitally, assess their learning, and then over the year evaluate and track progress made. One part of this package is for families to access your child’s learning journey at home through the Orbit Family website. Parents can send in ‘postcards’ of children’s learning and achievements at home which we use in our assessments. It is an easy system to use which enables better communication with parents and keeps families updated and contribute to your child’s learning.

This helps us to celebrate together their achievements and to work together to ensure your child’s well-being and development needs are met so that they continue to make progress. We would appreciate it if you could add your own comments, photos and observations about your child’s needs, activities, interests and achievements to the Learning Journey folder. The keyworker will help you do this. This information will enable the key person to identify your child’s stage of progress and together decide on how to help your child move on to the next stage for their future learning.
